Looking forward, reflecting back …

“It’s the period between Christmas and New Years. What day it is doesn’t matter. Existence is confusion. Time is a flat circle.”

Woman reading on sofa by fire

I love this week … between Christmas and the New Year.

It’s wonderful to be cozy at home watching football, catching up on books, magazines, TV series and movies.

And enjoying the final days of Christmas decorations and lights.

I’ll have everything packed away before we clink and drink to the New Year.

In an effort to simplify and reduce stress, I vowed not to send a holiday card this year.

And then I did.

At the last minute.

They hit the mail on Christmas Eve.

And that’s ok.

Happy Holidays Card

We spent the week leading up to Christmas with family at the Hotel Del Coronado.

Coronado is my happy place and The Del is extra special and magical during the holidays.

The lights, the Christmas decorations, the skating rink … and the beach.

Need I say more?

We had so much fun.

The Del had lots of holiday fun planned … in addition to ice skating beachside,

kids can visit Santa on the beach, decorate gingerbread houses,

enjoy a Victorian Tea and so much more.

Family Christmas Photo

Holly Jolly the Elf made a surprise visit to grand-nieces Halle and Leila.

When we visit Coronado we do a lot of walking.

So many adorable homes decked out for Christmas.

We even made time to check out some real estate.

Loved this new home’s rooftop deck.

On Christmas Eve we went to my sister and brother-in-law’s.

And had Chinese take-out.

So simple, so yummy, so fun.

At my sister’s request I brought the makings for Raspberry Kir Royale’s.

She’s a bubbles fan and gave two thumbs up to the festive addition

of Chambord and fresh raspberries.

Glasses of Raspberry Kir Royale on bar

On the way home, Jim and I drove up and down the streets of our neighborhood looking at all the beautiful Christmas lights.

Many of our neighbors go all out and we appreciate their efforts.

Christmas day was a quiet day at home.

It’s been our tradition to go to the movies on Christmas night, but the past couple of years we’ve elected to watch movies at home.

After a big Christmas dinner it was nice not to go anywhere

and cozy up in comfy clothes by the fire.

Another holiday season in the books.

Champagne Bottle & Ice Bucket

And I treasure this week, not just for lounging but to get organized for the year ahead.

Here’s what I’ve accomplished so far ~

  • Unwrapped my 2022 Erin Condren calendar/planner. Yes, I still use a paper planner. My sister got me hooked on Erin Condren several years ago and I look forward to choosing a new cover and interior page design each year. I’ve already transferred birthdays, anniversaries, and other important dates to the new planner … and highlighted them with colorful pens. Inevitably I’ll get a couple of dates mixed up. The errors will reveal themselves throughout the year … without fail.
  • Cleaned and reorganized my closet. And made a run to the local donation site with two huge bags of clothing and shoes. Jim, if you’re reading this my denim count is down to 12. ONLY 12!!! It’s a post-Christmas miracle.

Walk in closet

  • Straightened up my bathroom vanity cabinet and drawers … tossing old products and samples I’ll never use.
  • Reorganized our laundry closet in preparation for a revamp of my laundry routine. Stay tuned for this exciting content.

Laundry Room

  • Cleaned and organized the refrigerator and freezer.
  • Bought a white faux cranberry wreath – half price! – to put away for next year.

  • Cleared out my in-box by unsubscribing from emails and texts. A never-ending process. Are you inundated with junk email? And how the heck did they start sliding into our DM’s? Sigh.

Still to do ~

  • Update my filing. Yes, I still have paper files. And begin gathering documents for our 2021 tax returns. Of all the week’s tasks, this is my very special favorite.
  • Put away Christmas decorations. I’ll get this done before New Year’s Eve so I can start the new year with a fresh, clean slate.
  • Speaking of New Year’s Eve, I’m looking forward to another quiet evening at home. I like to get out my journal to reflect back and look forward.

What I’m looking forward to in the new year ~

  • New Year’s Day! I’m excited for the NHL Winter Classic, this year it’s in Minnesota, and the unveiling of HGTV’s 2022 Dream Home in Vermont. I’ll have a pot of The Party’s Over Vegetable Soup (recipe at the end of the post) on the stove … the perfect accompaniment for hockey and critiquing others interior design choices. I’ve made no secret of my disappointment in recent years Dream Homes. After peeking at this year’s home … and I don’t want to get too far out over my skies, but … things may be looking up. Stay tuned … I might write a post about itAs of today you can enter daily to win (the Dream Home, a brand new SUV and $250k cash) … and I do.

  • The debut of Magnolia Network on January 5th. Who else is excited for the return of Chip, Joanna and friends?
  • Weddings! 2022 is going to be a Wedding-Palooza! We have four on the calendar so far … a son, two nieces and a friend’s son … and it’s still early.
  • Wedding guest dress shopping! The four weddings on our calendar range from winter formal to summer casual. No, Jim, I cannot wear the same dress to all four weddings. What do you think of this little number? For the summer casual wedding, of course. Ha!

Woman trying on gold gown

  • My annual reread of Elizabeth Gilbert’s Big Magic. So much creative encouragement in this little book … puts me in the right frame of mind to hit the ground running in the New Year.

  • Snowberry’s garden. We’re days from January and spring is just around the corner. Living in California spring comes early and I can’t wait to see our garden come to life for its second season. Last year I did a lot of experimenting … I had success with foxgloves and dahlias. So this year I’ll be adding more. Last year I purchased dahlia tubers from Jennifer at The Flowering Farmhouse and will place another order as soon as they’re available (looks like early 2022). Jen has a gorgeous blog and provides wonderful guidance on caring for dahlias. One of my raised beds is reserved for a dahlia cutting garden. Fun!

Juliet, I loved hearing about your holiday festivities. That hotel is amazing. I am very curious about your new laundry routine and am definitely going to have to give your soup recipe a try!!! happy new year

    • Hi Crystal … the Del is amazing. I love it so much! My new laundry routine is a work in progress … and very exciting stuff. I’ve run into a little problem with static, but once I get it worked out a blog post will follow. Hold your breath!!! If the soup is too bland, add some stew meat or other protein … I’ll be going meatless for my first pot of the new year. After over indulging the past few weeks, emergency measures are in order. Happy New Year! xo

  • Juliet,
I was just admiring the dress you encouraged me to buy for my son’s wedding in 1988! Still beautiful!

  • Always enjoy your posts. We made the rasberry Kir Royale drinks for our Christmas Dinner this year and they were a huge hit! Thank you for the recommendation.

    • Hi Kelly … I’m so so happy to hear this … the Rasp KR is such a festive drink. I love it for the holidays … and Valentine’s Day too. Wishing you a very Happy New Year! xo

  • Juliet, thank you for all the time and effort that goes into your blog! It’s always ENJOYABLE. My dil will love the Raspberry kir royale, it sounds yummy. Do you have a suggestion for a sauvignon blanc spritzer? I too stll use a paper calendar to help keep me organized and to make notes in throughout the year, so glad to hear someone else does too!
Happy New year to you and Jim

    • Hi Linda … and thank you for the delightful comment and compliment! So happy to know I’m not the only one still using a paper calendar. I’ve tried to go electronic and it just doesn’t work for me. I’m hopeless. As for a SB spritzer … I enjoy and look for a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc … they tend to be citrusy and grapefruit and I love that because I like garnishing with a lime or lemon wheel. As for the spritzer part you can use Club Soda or sparkling water. Club Soda has a little more flavor and zing. A white wine spritzer with NZ SB is my favorite, but if you’re not a fruity SB gal, any reasonably priced SB will do! If you find something you like, let me know. Happy New Year! xo

  • Juliet, you inspired me with the Raspberry Kir Royale. Made this Christmas eve and they were a hit for our small family gathering. And can I just say that Chambord bottle is dreamy. Looking forward to reading all that you’ll share in the new year.

Happy Holidays to you and yours.

    • Hi Deb … I’m so happy to hear this! And thank you for being here! I agree, the Chambord bottle is the best. It reminds me of a small crown … so pretty and elegant. Wishing you a very Happy New Year! xo

    • Yes, I got it done! We lost power most of today … wind blew a piece of power pole across the street of BAM big noise and power out. Thank goodness for the generator. Yes, it’s going to be a very green spring. Thankfully! Happy New Year, Contessa! xo

  • Sounds like the most perfect christmas spend with family. I just got out my 2022 calendar also and transferred all the dates over. Like you, I will probably get a few wrong. oh well, such is life. i am beginning today to get all the decorations down, so wish me luck. that is always such a chors. Happy New Year

    • It is a big chore … especially when you’ve decorated as beautifully as you have. I’m so thankful for this low-key week to take care of it all. Glad to hear I’m not the only one with a paper planner and who messes up a few dates. Whoopsie! Wishing you a Happy New Year, Marty! xo

  • delighted to discover your site and blog. very inspiring. I have read “Big Magic” a few times, thanks for the reminder to read it again. cheers!

    @sprucestudioshoppe

    • Hi Scarlett … such a great beginning of year book! Love those stoppers and your friends will too. We actually lost ours and I had to run to Crate & Barrel to buy another (and a back up) the week before Christmas. Nothing worse than left-over, flat champagne. Wishing you a Happy New Year! xo

  • Pet Peave:
could we please wait until January 6 to put away Christmas…..this is the date the 3 Wise Men arrive and they brought the presents…..seems so disrespectful to them and what they represent to pack up Christmas before they arrive with their gifts

    • Excellent point. Sadly my wreath is dried out and shedding each time we open the door. Butthe rest of my minimalist decor can remain a while longer! xo

  • 5 stars
I got a bottle of Chambord in my stocking …thanks to you and a hint to Howard. We just got back yesterday but you’ve inspired me to organize (I did remove one item of clothing to donate for each new gift that I received though).

Now I need the ingredients for that soup. Love the name! I’m ready to cut way back 😉 But it was fun while it lasted.

Happy new year! Loved this newsy post!

    • Hi MA, your comment went into my spam … oops. Happy New Year! So glad you received the Chambord … I love the bottle, it’s so regal. Good luck with your organizing … it’s a never ending process, right?! xo

  • This is the lovliest post friend. I’m so glad you enjoyed a fun holiday with your beautiful family. I really want to read big magic! I’m going to purchase it through you link, I’ve heard so many great things and I need a good read.
