Cute Summer Sandals

It’s sandal season and I’m teaming up with Kim to share all the cute summer sandals on our radar.

It’s sandal season!

And today I’m joining Kim to explore our favorite sandal styles for summer.

Flatly of summer sandals, sun hats, bags, sunglasses and a book sitting on a beach coverup.

Flip flops, slides, espadrilles, wedges, platforms, etc.

There are so many styles of cute summer sandals.

All occasions and price points.

It’s impossible to cover them all.

These are some of my favorites.

A Few Classic Flats

I stopped by Nordstrom to browse their current sandal selection and asked about their top sellers. To my surprise, the top two are Tory Burch’s Miller sandal followed by Birkenstocks. Let’s talk about Tory. The Miller sandal has been around forever or so it seems. By all accounts they’re well-made and at the $200 price point they better be. They’re considered iconic, that said I’ve never owned a pair. I’m not big on the in-your-face logo. Not that I’m opposed to wearing logos. Anyway, not only are they the top seller at Nordstrom, I did a little inter-web research and they remain an overall, much sought after, favorite everywhere. The color options are endless.

The Hermes Oran sandal is of course the classic of classic flat sandals. At the $760 and up price point it’s definitely luxury. And while I’ve been known to splurge on the occasional shoe, it won’t be on a basic, flat sandal. Having said that, I admire the beautiful, classic design and construction of the Hermes Oran. For those of us who won’t be swanning around the Mediterranean on a mega-yacht this summer here are a few affordable alternatives.

Hermes Oran Sandals.

Sam Edelman’s Bay Cutout sandal and Steve Madden’s Hayden come to mind and I own one of each. Both come in multiple colors and they hold up. I’ve been wearing mine for at least 10 years. Other brands I like are French Sole’s Alibi sandal and M. Gemi’s Mafalda sandal. And let’s not turn our noses up at Amazon The Drop’s Monika sandal. To end on a high (expensive) note, the Saint Laurent Tribute Nu Pieds sandal is a beauty … if that’s your situation.

Jack Rogers are another easily recognizable, classic sandal. I have four pair of Classic Jacks. Is that excessive?

I may not love a logo, but I’m all about a monogram. Design and monogram your Jack’s here.

Espadrilles & Wedge Mules

Espadrilles and wedges … I can’t get enough. Must be a throw back to my 70’s heyday. And I love a mule or slide. Ankle straps can give me blisters and it’s tough adjusting them, they’re either too tight or too loose. I’m talking about everyday espadrille and wedge sandals …. not sandals for dressier occasions where a slide or mule might be out of place. We’ll talk about dressy sandals later. As for espadrilles and wedges, I think the lower, flatter platform options are the most wearable and I’m loving these Kaanas Conchal raffia sandal.

A few weeks ago I shared my five essential summer dresses, and this pair of wedge sandals. I’ve been wearing them constantly and I can tell they’re going to be the workhorse of my summer. They’re super comfy and can be paired with everything from dresses to jeans to shorts … and everything in between.

Born Sunny Sandal

The TOM’s Diana mule is on my wish list.

Donald Pliner’s Jocelyn wedge is a favorite too, in two neutral combinations, and navy and black. Their Fifi sandal is super cute … and versatile.

The Del Mar sandal is one of my favorites as is the very similar Layback.

Dole Vita’s Chavi’s are super cute.

Cordani’s Bella is  another that makes me swoon. In fuchsia and eight other colors.

If you’re looking for a higher wedge, the Ithaca sandal by Donald Pliner is a beauty.

Look at it in coral!

Flip Flops & Other Laid Back Sandals

Nothing says summer days at the beach like a worn-in pair of flip flops. Havaina, Cobian, Reef, OluKai whatever your favorite brand, flip flops feel like freedom to me. Growing up in Northern California I was never far from the beach, but I dreamed of sunnier Southern California beaches where I imagined lolling around on beach towel all day, occasionally donning shorts and flip flops and wandering up to the lunch stand. Somehow that carefree beach life never materialized and my flip flops are worn to run errands and other mundane things. And, yes, they occasionally make it to the beach.

Last summer I replaced my ratty old Cobian’s with a sleeker pair of OluKais.

Mish Mash of Cool Sandal Styles I Like

A few sandals that jumped out at me during my cruise through Nordstrom …

Hot pink sandals.

These Ivy Ruffle Raffia Slides from Larroude are so good. I mean, the ruffle! I tried on the hot pink and there are several other happy colors as well as neutrals.

Also from Larroude, the Hibiscus sandal. These give me 70’s vibes and remind me of my stylish aunt. If you’re not smiling I don’t know what to say.

Woman trying on sandals at Nordstrom.

These Dolce Vita Gabbi faux pear embellished slides came home with me. Enough said.

I’ve noticed a lot of sandals with metal toe rings. And I like it.

The crossover sandal is everywhere. Jenni Kayne does it well. This is also good. And this. And this.

I’m kind of in love with Beek Gallito and Tori slides.

A line up of colorful Beek slides.

I won’t be shamed by my love of the puffy slide. Roam’s Foldy slides are the best. Bionic’s Safari Mayla is puffy-ish. And I think this Day Twist sandal will be more palatable to some and still qualify as puffy. More puffers here, here and here.

These Enola Slides look cute and comfortable and they’re on my wish list too.

Happy Feet

Not to be indelicate but we have to address foot issues. I’m talking about dropped arches, bunions, hammer toes and other unpleasant but hard-won trophies from years (decades) of cramming our feet into uncomfortable shoes. Of course we looked fabulous in our sky high, pointy toed stilettos … and now we have to pay the piper. Oh, the horror of it all.

I developed three neuromas in my left foot that reared their ugly heads just before Kyle and Melody’s wedding and they’ve caused nothing but discomfort and distress ever since. I made the unwise decision to power through the wedding festivities in fabulous, gold Jimmy Choo platform sandals which made the situation that much worse. Do I regret it? Not. One. Bit.

Since then I’ve mostly followed my doctor’s advice by wearing more supportive and sensible shoes. Eye roll. In the sandal department this can be more challenging. While I love classic flats, their downside is a lack of foot bed support. And if they do have adequate support, I probably don’t want to be caught dead in them. This has led me to embrace Birkenstocks which are enjoying quite the renaissance. And, according to my local Nordstrom, the second most popular sandal in sales.

I own the basic black Arizona’s. Boring. There are so many more interesting styles and colors available.

Dressy Sandals

Let’s end on a happy note. If you’re getting gussied up for summer weddings and other events and soirees, you’ll be looking for a dressier sandal. I’ve gotten smarter about choosing a lower heel … block or kitten. I’ve been wearing these Vince Camuto block heel sandals with just about everywhere. These Steve Madden’s are a similar option.

For more formal occasions, these kitten heels are very pretty. These too. And these Mini Annie sandles from Larroude are really good … in gold and ivory.

When attending weddings, I stash a pair of flat sandals in my bag, or car, to change into, if necessary, toward the end of the event or for dancing. I have a pair of gold Jack Rogers sandals that I bought for Kyle and Melody’s wedding after-party. I danced until the wee hours in total comfort. The next day was another story.

  • I read the title as “Cute Summer Salads”, opened the post and saw sandals and thought where are the salads, lol.

    • Ha! Rita … must have been a shock when you opened it up! Thanks for the laugh … I actually had to go back and recheck I hadn’t typed salad. 😉 xo

  • Nice round up, Juliet. These are so pretty. I like a sandal with an ankle strap – always look for a shoe I can run in, if necessary! I wear a narrow so also need to be able to adjust the top strap. I do love my Birks. My husband drilled some extra holes so I could cinch them up! I will check out Kim’s suggestions. 🙂

    • Hi Julia, that’s a good point about the strap. Although I guess I’ve adapt and can run in just about anything. I have to adjust top straps a lot because I also have narrow feet. Our local cobbler is pretty good with tightening the front straps and my husband, like yours, will add extra holes. We make it work! xo

  • I bought those cute wedges from your link…love them. They stay on without a back strap which I really need due to the little toe wrap. Thank you.
I have two pairs of the “stylish” Birkenstock type sandals (so comfortable) but Howard calls them my hippie sandals. None of my Florida friends’ husbands like them…but who cares 🙂

    • Oh Howard! Jim knows better than to make snide remarks about my Birks. It’s probably harder when I wear them with socks to yoga but so far he’s kept his snickering to behind my back. The born wedges are the best, right?! xo

  • HI Juliet, We are still wearing winter footwear in Colorado. Where the heck is spring?
Love the sandals! you introduced me to the Jack Rogers sandals! Have a great weekend! laura

    • Laura! What the heck is right? I’m sure any day spring is going to hit Colorado and you’ll be running around in your cute Jack Rogers! Happy weekend to you too. xo

  • Juliet, Love your sandal roundup. So many cute ones and we really did do different things. I love the wedges, and the cute slides. You found some pretty options. I see the Hermes copies all over now and you can’t tell the difference. I was in the Hermes store with my friend who was getting her watch fixed, and they really look nearly identical to the lower priced ones. You’d have to get up close to know.

I’ve been tempted too get a pair of Beeks. I keep getting the catalog and they look so pretty and comfy. Hmm, I want one of everything! Loved your collage too. Thanks for doing this with me. xo

  • I enjoyed the selection of sandals and it made me remember the joy of shopping for them in the past. I can no longer wear anything with a heel but you showed some lovely options. Thank you for your time and effort.

    • Hi Claudette! Thanks for chiming in. Can you wear a flat sandal … or Birkenstock type of shoe? xo

  • For whatever reason, my Jack Roger’s….in turquoise and white, are too loose on my feet. Now I’m motivated to do something about it, so I can wear them. Maybe a soft strip that would stick to the inside of the top strap?
I also have a hard time with flip flops. My best fitting type are the very narrow Reef Gingers. I think I have 4 colors! I like that they have a nice little arch support.
I’m on the lookout for a cute pair of fisherman’s sandals.

    • Lisa, I have a narrow foot too and sometimes I have to take sandals I really like to a local cobbler to have them tightened. It’s not that expensive, and it’s worth it for something you really like. I have a friend with wider feet and her problems is the opposite. I guess it’s about finding brands that work for our feet and sticking with them. sounds like you and Reef are a good fit! xo

    • Thanks, Joan. This was a lot of fun … as you can tell, I’m passionate about sandals. Ha! xo

  • Juliet, I love all of your sandal choices! So many great thins to add to my closet, although I will be honest…I have way too many sandals. Must be all of my years of living in the South by the beach. You can practically wear them all year long.
I have several pairs of Tory Burch sandals, the Miller Sandals run small in my opinion and I am not a huge fan of the logo. I cannot remember the name of the other sandals I have of Tory Burch but they are comfy and are well made.
I love the Hermes Sandals but I just cannot pay 700 for sandals, I am too cheap.
Wedges! Love a wedge sandal .
Speaking offing kind to your feet, have you tried Stegemann wool clogs? I wear them as slippers and LOVE them. They are so good for your feet, like a Birkenstock but a clog.
Off to see what Kim has discovered. See you on Saturday!
    xo

    • Elizabeth! No, I have not heard of Stegemann’s but will google right away. I’m with you, I have too many sandals. I’m glad they’re so thin and I can pack 3-4 pair into one shoe box. It doesn’t seem to matter the price point, all my sandals last and last so there’s really no need to buy new. Yet, here we are. I have a pair of Tori Burch too – the slides that also have a logo, but I think it’s a little more hidden. Who knows, probably fooling myself. Anyway this was a fun subject to play around with. Sandals = good weather and I’m all for that! See you Saturday. xo

  • Love the way your write
I too am a 70s California girl at heart so flip flops, wedges and espadrilles have always been my faves…sitting by the pool all day with books and margaritas, intermittent swimming, nothing better!
My splurge sandal maker is Mystique, made in Bali. They make great gifts, too. Just bought my SIL the turquoise Boho style, they are gorgeous.

  • So many cute choices, Juliet! I, sadly, am still wearing boots here, ha! And I haven’t had a pedicure in over a year. I need to get my act together. But so does Mother Nature! You, on the other hand, are always on point!

  • Hi Juliet,
I have looked at your blog so many times and so appreciative of all the work and research you did into the sandals you wear, shopped at Nordstrom. The Dolce Vita Gabbi Faux that you brought home are fabulous. Are they super soft and foam like on the bed of your entire foot.
Thank you for sharing your three neuromas in your left foot.
I’m sorry to hear that. I have no fat atrophy is my entire feet. I have to have super soft, puffy, soles with little platform throughout. I live in my NB sneakers with two inserts.

    • Hi Katherine … sad to say, the Dolce Vita’s are not super cushy on the foot bed. They’re not awful, but there’s not enough cushion or support for long-term wear or a lot of walking on hard surfaces. I’d say if you’re just heading out to lunch or dinner – walking short distances and sitting – then they’re perfectly fine. It’s a bummer we have these issues as we age and it prevents us from wearing some cute shoes. But it is what it is and we do the best we can, right?! I have inserts for my Hokas and they’re a game changer. Thanks for your sweet words. xo

  • A little late reading this, but I loved the post. I love Beeks, but don’t want to spend the money. And I love me some plastic Birks.I also have a thing for espadrilles and wedges and raffia!
Love everything M Gemi does, and I now want the Donald Pliners in tan AND the coral is so great, love the Del Mar sandals and now you’ve sold me 3 pair of shoes dang it…. >:)

    • Hi Gray, is it any wonder we acquire major ‘collecitons’ of sandals … it’s impossible not to love them all! xo

  • Hi, I’m Juliet … welcome to Make Mine a Spritzer where we talk about all things home décor, classic style and more! I’m so happy you’re here!
