Cabo Travel Diary & Must-Try Dining Spots

Today I’m sharing our fun getaway to Cabo, including our experience at the newish Four Seasons Resort Cabo San Lucas at Cabo Del Sol, and a our favorite must-try dining spots in and around Los Cabos.

We recently returned from a blissful four nights in Cabo … one of our favorite places to relax and rejuvenate. We spent most of our time lounging around the gorgeous resort pool and exploring some wonderful dining spots in Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo.

We stayed at the newish (May 2024) Four Seasons Resort and Residences Cabo San Lucas at Cabo Del Sol. The property is in the Cabo Del Sol community on the Sea of Cortez between the towns of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose Del Cabo (closer to Cabo San Lucas). Kyle and Melody joined us and we had a laid-back, fun 4-night getaway.

Getting There

Los Cabos is an easy, less-than-three-hour flight from the Bay Area. Our flight arrived early, and we packed carry-on bags, so when we landed and met the Four Seasons representative we were told there would be a 2-minute wait for our car. Due to the excessive wait time Jim led the way – about 5 steps – to the outdoor airport bar and by the time our drinks were poured our luggage was being loaded into the car. We piled in, drinks in-hand, for the 30-minute ride to the Four Seasons.

Four Seasons Resort & Residences Cabo Del Sol

We arrived at the hotel and were ushered into the beautiful lobby and offered refreshing fruit mocktails to sip during the easy check-in process.

Before we knew it we were whisked away in golf carts for a quick tour of the property on the way to our rooms.

The property is stunning. It’s been open a little over a year and the vegetation is still growing in. It’s lush and beautiful now and will get more so over time.

We booked ocean-view casita rooms with plunge pools and took advantage of their fourth-night-free rate.

Never underestimate the fabulousness of an outdoor shower.

The hotel has 96 guest rooms, suites, casitas and villas, three restaurants and two fabulous bars, including Sora on the rooftop. Coraluz, the more causal restaurant, is closed during the months of July and August.

The Mercado, off the lobby courtyard, offers all kinds of breakfast and lunch grab-and-go options … and ice cream!

I’m a room-service-for-breakfast sort of traveler, and connoisseur of hotel fruit plates. I give the Four Seasons 4-stars. And their blueberry muffins are the best I’ve ever tasted. Jim and I both loved their green juice. As for their hot cocoa, it’s the traditional Mexican chocolate which has a slight cinnamon twist. When in Rome …

The resort has two pools, an adult pool where we camped out.

And a family pool.

The poolside menu, and service, is excellent. I had the empanadas everyday as well as pico de gallo and those wonderful, thick chips.

At Melody’s urging we did Bandera shots, a trio of shots representing the colors of the Mexican flag. Lime juice, followed by blanco tequila, followed by Sangrita. Salute!

Jim and Kyle availed themselves of the gorgeous Cabo Del Sol Golf Course. To their delight drinks and tacos are included in the price of a round and readily available throughout the course. They made new friends.

I planned to visit the Tierra Mar spa but got too much sun our first day and my shoulders weren’t up to even the gentlest massage. I know, dumb.

The resort’s beach is billed as swimmable but the red flag was out during our stay. We still enjoyed the beach, walking along the surf and were grateful for a gentle breeze at the pool.

We met before dinner each night in the lobby bar where we sampled tequilas, chatted with the friendly bartenders and other guests.

We fell hard for the Four Seasons Cabo Del Sol and loved everything about our stay including everyone we encountered at the hotel … who are so friendly and helpful. We’re already plotting our triumphant return.

Must-Try Dining Spots in and Around Los Cabos

Cayao by Chef Richard Sandoval ~

Our first night we ate at the hotel’s Cayao restaurant, a Peruvian Japanese concept. The restaurant has the most gorgeous vantage point overlooking the Sea of Cortez and we sat on their covered patio alongside the walking path. It was the perfect first night welcome-to-paradise setting. I don’t recall what we ate, just that it was delicious. And I was so happy to be back in Cabo with my favorite people sipping cocktails under the stars and watching the waves roll in.

Flora Farms ~

Flora Farms has been on my list of places to visit for a lonnnng while. Melody and Kyle had been there before and were excited to return. A lush oasis tucked away at the end of a long, dirt road, the 25-acre organic farm and garden, with artisanal markets, animal sanctuary and restaurant is an enchanting place to spend a few hours. The cocktails are beautiful … fresh and delicious … and the food is amazing.

My photos don’t do the place justice. It was a bustling night and I was overwhelmed by everything there was to see and experience. Excuses, excuses.

We arrived early, checked in with the restaurant host, were directed to the bar, and with cocktails in hand we wandered around the incredible property.

Jim had been telling us about a Mexican Cointreau dupe … and there it was on the bar. Jim asked for it in his margarita.

Before I forget, it was mango season during our stay and trees were dripping with mangos everywhere including the Four Seasons. They had a large orchard on the entrance to the property currently being harvested. Did I take photos? No.

In hilarious news, none of us knew that mangos grew on trees … we were enlightened. Mango trees were plentiful around Flora Farms too and I did manage to snap a pic. They’re very pretty.

It’s off season for the farm, but they still had a farm stand going and Melody did a little shopping.

Senor Turtle!

Even the powder room was picturesque so Melody and I attempted a bathroom mirror selfie.

There’s so much to see and take in and before we knew it we were being seated for dinner. With a live band playing, twinkle lights sparkling, candles flickering and a menu full of wonderful, seasonal dishes, it’s hard to imagine a more magical dining experience.

Everything on the menu sounded so darned good and we had a hard time deciding. We started with focaccia bread that arrived hot from the oven (omg), bruschetta and a beet salad. By the time we polished off these shared plates, we were stuffed and decided to split two entrees … fried chicken and tortellini. There’s also a wood-fired pizza oven … and the pizzas whizzing by our table looked scrumptious. Next time.

Loved the denim dinner napkins.

Flora Farms is wildly popular for brunch and I can see why. Since we were visiting in the off season (it’s hot and humid) I was anti-daytime activities that didn’t involve a bathing suit and pool.

The Office on the Beach ~

If you haven’t been to The Office have you really visited Cabo? No!

The Office on Mendano Bay is a right of passage of sorts for Cabo visitors … and will likely become a non-negotiable on future trips. It’s a quintessential cantina with a full on toes-in-the-sand dining experience. It’s vibrant and colorful, there’s always live music and it’s just super fun. The views of El Archo are unmatched, the sunsets are beautiful and its fun to see the yachts in the harbor and watch the sunset cruises returning to the marina … including two ‘pirate’ ships that are a constant on the horizon around Los Cabos.

The Office margaritas are goblet sized, the menu is pretty standard American and Americanized Mexican fare. But let’s be real, no one’s going there for the food. It’s all about the scenery and the fun, lively atmosphere.

That said, the food is just fine and I always order the coconut shrimp. Jim had another shrimp dish that he seemed very happy with. I can’t recall what Kyle and Melody ordered, but no one went home hungry or unhappy.

Beach vendors ply their trade in front of the restaurant. When I admired a straw tote, Melody and Jim took it as a challenge and started bargaining on my behalf. $20!!!  I’ve been carrying it non-stop since.

Yes, at The Office there’s a mild level of debauchery in the air, but it’s family friendly. Guests of all ages from littles to great-grandparents celebrating occasions. And almost everyone happily partaking in the tequila-poured-into-the-mouth ritual (adults only) by The Office Rambo.

Of course, we took the requisite tourist photo.

We left the office and walked down Avenue del Pescador to Bar Esqina at the Bahia Hotel & Beach House. Kyle and Melody have stayed there and loved it. We sat out on the terrace, listening to the band before grabbing an Uber back to the resort.

Acre Restaurant & Cocktail Bar ~

Acre Resort is a 40-acre property with an organic farm supporting their Michelin Green Star winning Acre Restaurant & Cocktail Bar. Another oasis in the desert, Acre it’s very near Flora Farms … they share a dirt road entry that branches off to two very different but equally beautiful properties.

The entrance to the restaurant is stunning! Top of the stairs on the right is a mezcal tasting room. We hit traffic on our way to Acre and went straight to our table. Not to worry, we had a little mezcal taste after dinner.

Behind the mezcal tasting room is the cocktail bar. Look at that stunning tile, it’s so distinctive and found in other locations around the property.

Acre Restaurant has been awarded Michelin Green Star recognizing their commitment to sustainability and ethical practices. So the menu is, of course, wonderful and everything is delicious. Here’s are some of the pretty dishes we indulged in.

We experienced wonderful live music everywhere we went including this soulful duo.

Our meal concluded with a taste of mezcal accompanied by roasted crickets with a chili lime salt and grapefruit slices. Melody says the crickets taste like chips. What do you think, would you try them?

In addition to the amazing restaurant and cocktail bar, Acre Resort includes sleeping spaces in the form of treehouses, villas and haciendas. Also, a pool, spa, gorgeous event spaces, an animal rescue, and much more.

After dinner we took a stroll down one of the rambling paths to see what we could see.

We ended our evening at the Four Season’s rooftop bar, Sora.

  • What an amazing, detailed write up of your adventure! I feel like I’ve just been on a vacation myself. It sounds like the ultimate relaxing time. I’m glad you had such a good time with family. Curious if you have watched the series on Apple TV called Acapulco? It is a hilarious comedy about a resort in the 1980s and the lives of the young Mexican people who work there. The first 2 seasons are especially funny. Thanks for sharing all the details of your trip!

    • Kelly! I hadn’t heard of Acapulco but it sounds wonderful and I’m adding it to my watch list. Thanks for the tip! xo

    • Nancy! It’s funny you should mention brunch at Flora Farms. Our DIL Melody suggested we go for brunch and said it’s very much a ‘brunch vibe’ but because we were visiting in the off season and it was hot and humid I vetoed brunch in favor of dinner. Next time we’re in Cabo, hopefully in a milder season, brunch is definitely on the agenda! xo

  • Bookmarking this post! Been to Cabo once, and it was all this– beauty, relaxation, and fresh food. I have Cabo San Lucas as one of my saved cities on the weather app, and several times a week, after seeing the rain or cold snap expected in my neighborhood, I tab over to Cabo and it’s almost always in the high 70s or 80s with clear blue skies and sun. Ahhh Cabo.

  • Hi Juliet,
What an amazing trip and write-up.
I have never been to Mexico because every time I travel internationally I get sick…and I fear Montezuma’s revenge.
Is all the water filtered at the resort? Can you drink from the tap? I have heard stories about people getting sick just from lettuce washed in the water there.
Please share how you avoid it.
    Thank you!

    • Hi Cyndi, we travel to Mexico frequently and haven’t had Montezuma’s revenge since the 1980’s when we were young and dumb. The hotels provide bottled water in guest rooms (like most hotels in the U.S.). I wouldn’t drink from the tap … but I wouldn’t drink from the tap most places. We brush our teeth from the tap with no issues. Within the resorts drinks with ice are fine … cubes are made with filtered water. Same goes for most of the popular restaurants. I would be cautious with mixed or iced drinks in off the beaten path places (where you’ll find some of the best authentic Mexican food) where it’s best to stick with canned or bottled drinks. We’ve never had an issue with salads or vegetables in Mexico. Cabo has some wonderful organic farms.. Although a friend of mine recently got very sick from Trader Joe’s lettuce. I think you just need to be cautious and aware of where you’re eating and drinking … we stick to the mainstream and don’t really give it much thought. We love Mexico! xo

  • Your trip looks like such a relaxing experience. I’ve only just started visiting your blog – please tell us who Kyle and Melody are, is he your husband’s son?
Bravo to you for a carry on!!!

  • Juliet so fun to see where you went and what you did in Cabo. I have never been to Mexico and I know we need to go. Max always wants to be able to snorkel, and I know a lot of places the ocean is rough. Is it possible to snorkel at other times? I think the resort looks like a dream! I love that you had your breakfast at your own little pool.
So fun to do this with Kyle and Melody too. Great way to celebrate Jim.Those restaurants are so gorgeous. Flora Farms is a dream!Wow.

Is Mezcal the same as tequila? You were brave to try the crickets! I am saving all this. Love all the tips and great places to see. Thank you for sharing all the fun.

    • Kim! The Sea of Cortez side of Baja has wonderful snorkeling … it’s not as rough as the Pacific Ocean side. I’m not a snorkeler but others I’ve traveled with have indulged and thought it was amazing. Mezcal is made from the agave plant and is smokier than tequila. I like in small doses, Jim, Kyle and Melody are obsessed! xo

  • I forgot to say your cute bag was such a find. Nate Berkus says Mexico is where he finds all his best home things and is his favorite place in the world.
You girls look so pretty in your selfie! x

  • This looks so amazing! Do you do anything to prepare agains travelers stomach issues?
We’ve been in Mexico 4 times in 5 * hotels and every single time I come home sick. After the last trip I promised myself “never again Mexico” Seeing these pictures and reading your comments I really want to go back now! Any suggestions?

    • Hi there, I’m so sorry to hear you’ve had repeat issues. We never have stomach troubles in Mexico. Well, not since 1987 … which I still recall vividly! Maybe ask your doctor for a recommendation because it’s such a wonderful place to visit! xo

  • What a fun trip! How nice to have a little tour this morning!!
It’s been awhile, but we’ve had about 10 trips to Mexico without any tummy troubles.
I’d love to snorkel in the Sea of Cortez – I must say, that snorkeling in Cozumel was stellar!

Flora Farms looks wonderful, I’d love to take a cooking class there! I must ask though, on the bar menu, what’s with the $300 margarita, with hand carved ice cube?! I do hope that was tongue in cheek!

    • Hi Lisa, I think the $300 is pesos! I’ve never been to Cozumel because for us it’s just a little bit further, but I’ve been to the Caribbean and you can’t beat that gorgeous, crystal clear water. Flora Farms has so much to offer. Wish we’d had more time to explore it. Next time! xo
