Mother Denim Styling Event + A Fall (Ina) Recipe, Nail Polish Color & Decluttering Project

Today on weekend meanderings, a Mother Denim Styling Event at Flaunt, my fall cleaning and decluttering project, a fall recipe and nail polish color, and homecoming mums.

Happy Saturday, friends!

It’s time for the weekend post with Kim and Elizabeth. Our weekly roundup of inspirations and goings on.

Our nights enjoying cocktails around the fire are numbered. Or are they? Unless it’s raining or unbearably cold we can sit out here year round. This will likely be our last fall and winter at Snowberry and we’ve got to make the most of it.

It’s been a busy week and we’re all looking forward to the weekend so let’s dive in …

Mother Denim Styling Event at Flaunt

Yesterday morning I got myself over to Flaunt in Danville to attend a preview of their Mother Denim Styling Event … the event continues today so if you’re local get over there!

The shop is stocked full of Mother Denim’s latest pieces from their holiday collection and other favorites. And the brand’s West Coast sales rep Lani Ako is at the shop offering styling tips and ideas.

Mother is a wildly popular Los Angeles based denim brand loved for its great style and fit.

I tried on as many styles as I could, these are the three that came home with me …

Mid Rise Maven Ankle Fray in Act Natural. Act Natural translates to warm white (even the hardware is soft white and tonal). I know it’s fine to wear white denim year round, but somehow a softer, warmer white feels better to me. I love this style’s mid-rise, wide leg, and looser fit … and hint of stretch.

Mid Rise Hiker Hover in Full Moon. These are the jeans I’ve been searching for … soft, mid-rise (I can’t take a super high rise which feels uncomfortably constricting around my ever expanding middle), they also have a touch of stretch and a finished hem.

Awol Hover in Roger That. Roger that is right … I LOVE these army green cargo-style pants made with 100% upcycled cotton. Their high-rise works because the band is loose aka comfortable. The tonal hardware is such a nice detail. These pants are a little long on me so I’ll cuff them or have them taken up. We’ll see.

The California Candle Co. ~

It was a treat to meet my Instagram friend Jen of The California Candle Co. who was at the event to shop and showcase her candles. She’s every bit as sweet and beautiful in person and she makes the most lovely candles, including these floral pressed beauties. With the holidays coming you can’t have too many pretty candles in your gifting repertoire.

But back to Jen. The Instagram algorithms must have led me to her at The California Rancher. She lives not far from me in a renovated rancher. Many decades may separate us, but we’re essentially the same. Ha! It looks like she’s in the process of building a little cottage on her property – probably about the same size as our new little downtown house! – and she’s an enjoyable and inspiring follow.

If you’re local, be sure to stop by Flaunt today for more Mother Denim shopping fun including yummy pastries, styling advice from Lani Ako, and – from noon to 4pm – Balestrieri Family Vineyards is offering local olive oil and wine tastings. I may have to go back.

Fall Cleaning & Decluttering, Part One

If you’ve been following the blog for a while you know I’ve been in a constant state of decluttering for what feels like years. Last year I chronicled my major closet clean out, but the process of decluttering never ends. After reading a very funny little book called Nobody Wants Your Sh*t, the follow up to Tidy the F*ck Up, I got motivated to do another sweep of the house. As is typical of any project, one thing leads to another, and it quickly became a deep clean and declutter project starting at the very back of the house which is our closet.

I’m no expert on the psychology of dust bunnies, but anecdotal evidence suggests it loves nothing more than a confined space with no outlet, like our closet. It seems like all the dust in our house gathers, forms into bunnies, and settles there. Every so often it requires taking everything off the floor and shelves for a deeper clean. And then the fun part is putting it back together.

Small bags and books on closet shelf.

So far I’ve cleaned and decluttered our closet, bathroom, bedroom, office, guest room and guest bath. And a good portion of the garage. The aftermath resulted in …

  • Donation of clothing, shoes, accessories and sheets to Assistance League Thrift Shop & Goodwill
  • Donation of bath towels to Joybound, a local animal shelter
  • 20 lbs of shredding to the UPS Store
  • A trip to Rapid Recycle, an eWaste recycler, to dispose of an old printer
  • A trip to the Walnut Creek police station’s drop box for expired medicines.
  • A trip to the county household hazardous waste facility to dispose of old and unused cleaning products

After clearing our office file drawers of 20 lbs of paper I rewarded myself by taking a break to update my inspiration board.

There’s no rest for the weary and this weekend’s fun includes taking my dust cloth and steam mop to the kitchen, great room and library. Nothing feels better than a freshly cleaned – and organized – house and these are a few of my cleaning essentials.

Linger Over Coffee

A couple of weeks ago I did something truly shocking. I changed my nail polish color. Toenail polish. For over ten years I’ve been wearing Essie’s After School Boy Blazer on my tootsies. I still love it and will never give it up. But, waiting for my appointment with lovely – and super fun – manicurist Irina, I allowed my head to be turned by her collection of rich, warm, autumn hued polishes. OPI’s Linger Over Coffee caught my eye and I took a walk on the wild side. Irina was delighted, she’s been trying to convince me to try something new.

Ina’s Chicken Picata

Have you read … or listened to … Ina’s new biography, Be Ready When the Luck Happens? I read it cover to cover the weekend it arrived and plan to download the audible, read by Ina, and listen in the car. Ina cooking challenges are all over social media, a la Julie and Julia, and I’m right there with them. I organized my Barefoot Contessa cookbook collection in chronological order and started rereading from the beginning, The BareFoot Contessa Cookbook. I recently made her Chicken Piccata recipe, from The Barefoot Contessa at Home served alongside Yukon gold mashed potatoes and roast broccoli.

All My Ex’s Live in Texas

Just kidding, but my oldest niece does. Niece Sam and her family up and moved to Texas three summers ago. I’m not going to lie, I thought they’d be back within a year. Au contraire, Auntie. They’ve created a beautiful life for themselves and recently settled into a new home in Godley, a small town named after lumber merchant R.B. Godley who donated 8 acres of land for the town in 1886.

Sister, brothers and their dog in front of their home in Texas.

Godley may be small but it has a big football culture focused around Godley High School. The high school has new football facilities that many colleges would kill for. As a big football fan myself it makes me happy to see Sam and her family getting into it. Her older boys, Wyatt (11) and Beau (8) are both playing football this year, and little sister Maesyn (6) joined a cheer team. It’s so cute to see her with her team on the sidelines with the high school cheerleaders.

Wyatt, Maesyn & Beau

This week was the high school homecoming and Sam sent me pictures of purple and white ribbons (the school colors) and other crafting materials. She said she was making her first homecoming mum for Maesyn. I felt pretty good about myself for knowing what this is. My blogger friend, KariAnne, who lives in Texas introduced me to the concept of mums when her daughters were in high school. It was the first I’d ever heard of them, apparently they’re a Texas thing (correct me if I’m wrong) but I have no idea what I’m talking about having only been outside an airport in Texas once. My minimal research suggests that mums made their first appearance at Baylor University’s homecoming in 1936. Anyway, Maesyn and her cheer friends wore their mums as hair clips for the homecoming parade and her cheer team’s float took 2nd prize!

Since moving to Texas, Sam has gone back to work as a hair stylist in Ft. Worth. And her husband Justin relocated his thriving performance car business without skipping a beat, it’s growing by leaps and bounds. I miss them so much but enjoy watching their family thrive in their new hometown.

If you know anything about homecoming mums, please fill me in.

Odds & Socks ~

Speaking of football, the Navy vs Notre Dame game is today at noon ET. Navy is this year’s host so the game is being played at MetLife Stadium. Navy is the underdog, but they’re undefeated this season and I think they’ll play Notre Dame tough and I’m not going to jinx myself, but look out.

I ordered these barrel jeans. They’re a pre-order expected to ship after November 25th.

And that’s what I have for you this week. Let’s see what’s inspiring Kim and Elizabeth.

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA STYLE

PINECONES AND ACORNS

I’m off to meet niece Shelby to walk around the reservoir followed by breakfast with BFF Jane. Then it’s home to watch the Navy game, I’m recording it so I can catch up when I get there.

Thanks for stopping by and have the best weekend!

  • As always, Juliet, that was such a lovely post. It brought back fond memories of high school football and wearing mums. Back in the 60’s, we wore them for our Thanksgiving Day game, which was also Homecoming. That always made sense to me because the alumni were back home on Cape Cod for Thanksgiving. Our mums were huge, the size of a baseball at least, and were white, with just one purple ribbon, also our colors.
We will be watching the Navy game today too- our son is a grad of the USNA, so we are big fans, even as a multigenerational Air Force family. Go Navy and Happy Fall!

    • Wow, mums have a rich history and tradition. Were they made of real flowers? I hope you weren’t too disappointed over Navy’s loss yesterday. What a bummer. Notre Dame is – unfortunately – very good. Forgive me if I already told you this, but my high school sweetheart went to the Air Force Academy. A huge disappointment to my Naval Academy dad! xo

  • Juliet – your niece and family are precious! Mums at homecoming are a huge thing throughout the South, I guess!? They are huge in VA. When I was a cheerleader in high school, we always wore gigantic mum corsages at homecoming. The homecoming court wore them and then girls wore them to the dance. My mom and her friends did the same in the 50’s.
Then in college in the 70’s and 80’s we were still all doing that in college.

    • Gray, I love learning more about mums. My mom grew up in Alabama and I don’t recall her mentioning them. Were yours made with real flowers? Sounds like a fun tradition that’s still going strong. xo

  • I am so glad your family is loving Texas! I live forty miles north of Ft. Worth in a small town…Decatur. This is where Imwas born and raided as did my husband. Back in the day..way back‍♀️the mums were real flowers and smelled divine. My husband and I were jr high/ high school sweethearts and getting my mum was the best! I have been doing the 28 day declutterring challenge and it has been, well, challenging I enjoy your posts and have family in California.

      • Ha! My mom was an English teacher and sometimes I think she must be looking down on me shuddering with my typos and grammatical errors! xo

    • Hi Cathy! Thank you for the info on mums. And how awesome that you grew up with the tradition. Were the flowers actually mums? I did hear that they are traditionally presented by ones date to the dance. I love that you and your husband were high school sweethearts. Good luck with the decluttering … it’s a lot of work but so gratifying. xo

  • Hi Juliet,

I’ve been reading your blog since the very beginning but never commented or subscribed until today. I look forward to my Saturday morning ritual of coffee and your weekend meanderings (along with Kim’s and Elizabeth’s) and I adore your sense of design, personal style and travel adventures and other tidbits you share with your readers. Thank you for sharing your life with us and showing that kindness is never out of style!

    • Emilie! Thank you so much for the very kind words. I’m thrilled to have you as an official subscriber and I’m glad we can share a few laughs together on Saturday mornings. xo

  • Juliet, Love the jean round up. I think I will order the cream ones! They may fit my short frame and I thin be bright with the fall colors of the closet. Love what you did to your closet and the styling!! I will share it when I did part 3 of my closet revamp. Very pretty.

Yay for your nice and her cute family. They look happy. Never heard of mums either!
I love chicken piccata.. Ina is so good.
Also following the cute Jen ! What a lovely home and her candles are adorable. xo

    • Kim, the cream denim will look great on you … I adore the color and it’s so good for fall and winter. Glad you’re following, Jen. She’s adorable! xo

  • Hi Juliet,
I have subscribed…until now I’ve just been clicking over from
Kim’s post, but I wanted to show support for your blog!
Also, at the top of this post you said, “This will likely be our last fall and winter at Snowberry and we’ve got to make the most of it.”
What have I missed? Are you moving, after putting all that work into your lovely home?
    Please share…
LOVE your blog, your style, your spirit.
    Happy Fall!
    Cyndi

    • I was just going to ask the same thing, about the Snowberry reference.

Also, I read Ina’s book last weekend at the beach and it was perfect, took my mind off the election for a few hours at least!

Thanks for another great post xoxo

      • Hi Valletta … I’m glad you enjoyed her book too. Are you watching her Be My Guest series on Food Network? As for Snowberry, we are moving on. At the beginning of the year be bought a tiny house downtown and we’re in the process of designing a new house on the lot. More to come in the New Year! xo

    • Hi Cyndi! Thank you … I’m thrilled to have you as an official subscriber. As for Snowberry, we bought a tiny house in downtown Lafayette at the beginning of the year. Since then we’ve been working to design a new – small house – on the lot and hope to be ready to build next year. We’ll be selling Snowberry sometime in the spring. In January I’ll start a regular series on designing and building our new little house. Happy to have you along for the journey. xo

  • Hi Juliet,
Well, I’m too late to head to Flaunt (boo!) today. I’m working on the same project as you, decluttering. Today is the garage and, boy, it is nasty dusty. I keep sneezing! I love the titles of the two books, so I’ll have to read them.
Your niece and her family are so sweet! I’m glad that they have found a place to call home, although it is so hard to have family so far away. I’ve not pondered about the mums before, so I’ll have to look into that.
I love the color you put on your toes. It’s nice to switch it up sometimes, so good for you for changing things up!
Your patio is always so peaceful looking and it is nice to enjoy for a good amount of evenings in the year. I have no doubt that you’ll make your next patio just as beautiful.
By the way, does your new home have a name yet??? I think it’s time to give it a name to reference.
    Enjoy your weekend!
    Janet

    • The decluttering never ends … and I can related to your sneezing fits! Good question about the new house name. I’m calling it the little house on 4th, when it starts to come together perhaps a name will emerge. Or I may have to host a naming competition! Hope you had some fun this weekend and didn’t spend it all in the garage. xo

  • I did my best to root for Navy after taking a fascinating tour of the the US Naval Academy in Annapolis this morning but alas… So sorry. Glad that your Saturday post is back although I did not receive an email. Hope I am still subscribed.

    • Debra, you toured the Naval Academy this weekend?! What fun! Oh boy, it was a dismal game. Notre Dame is good but … ugh. I’ll double check your subscription status. xo

      • Checked my email list and you’re on it … if you don’t receive my email next Saturday, please let me know and I’ll investigate further. xo

  • Juliet,
Enjoy every moment in your beautiful back garden and firepit and then when it’s time to start over in your little cottage you will be ready.
I love all of your fun pants/jeans from Flaunt. You look fabulous in everything you try on!
Your sweet niece and family are adorable. I know less than you about mums and have been to Texas many times. Perhaps you need to take a trip there to learn more.
I am on a huge decluttering and organizational kick too. This morning I emptied 3 large Tupperware containers of shorts, linen and pants. They are off to my niece, the Thrift Store and a women’s shelter that I do volunteer cooking for.
Ina has been a favorite for years, I have all of her books and bake a lot of her recipes! The chocolate loaf cake is a must! As is the Sour Cream coffee cake.
Love your mood board, and that inspirations cooking range!!!
    HAve a wonderful weekend Juliet.
    xo

    • You’re right, I need an investigative trip to Texas as soon as possible. Whatever it takes to get the story! I’ll look for those too recipes, they sound delish! xo

  • Hi Juliet — Love all your new jeans! Someone today told me that my cropped jeans look like “high waters” and no one can wear them well, haha! Take that, Molly in Maine! I started to clean out my closet, but abandoned it when I got busy with other things. I must get back to it. Thanks for the inspiration, though my closet will never be as beautiful as yours! Wow, they start ’em young in Texas… But it looks like fun for everyone! Have a great week!

    • Oh my gosh, Molly … that makes me laugh. I guess most of my jeans are ‘high water.’ Although I remember it being a horrendous insult in middle school. I’m back on the cleaning and decluttering bandwagon this week too. It never ends. xo

  • Wow…you good so good in those jeans and cute loafers. It seems like this print is darker for the comments…or is that due to having my cataracts removed? 🙂

  • Hi Juliet,
Your backyard looks so pretty. I know your property is a lot to look after. Owing a home, there is always so much to look after. It can become a full time job.
Your family in Texas are adorable. It’s hard when they are so far away.
    Have WONDERFUL week.

  • Oooh that chicken piccata looks delicious! I have the hardest time with jeans. Thank you for the reviews! That is wonderful that your niece and fam are thriving in Texas.
