Happy Saturday, friends!
It’s time for the weekend post with Kim and Elizabeth, our weekly roundup of inspirations and goings on. Today I’m gushing about a Nathan Turner book event at The Spotted Cow, plus linen shirtdresses that will keep you cool and polished all summer. Oh, and a book giveaway … be sure to enter!

Friends, it’s hot. Was that me complaining about being too cold last week? When I say hot, I mean hot. Ok, not triple digit hot – yet. But 90+ hot and the suddenness the temperature jump made it feel quite jarring. Of course, I picked the hottest night of the year to venture out and we’ll get to that in a minute.
Entering my second summer at the pied-à-terre, I can’t tell you how much I miss an in-freezer ice maker. Futzing with ice cube trays is getting old and hell hath no fury like moi when slightly inconvenienced.
There’s not much happening at the Folly so let’s skip over that and get right to this week’s inspirations.
Snowberry Rewind | Week 3, part one
Week 3 is all about Snowberry’s outside transformation which needed as much TLC as the inside.
There’s a lot of ground to cover, pun intended, so I’m breaking it down into two – or three – parts. This week it’s the back patio, our most used outdoor space. The L-shaped patio had to accommodate an outdoor kitchen, dining space, lounging zone around a large fireable, and a water feature cleverly built into a new stone retaining wall. Take a look.
Nathan Turner Book Event
Nathan Turner is my favorite of favorite interior designer / lifestyle gurus. And he’s a local guy. He grew up right here in the East Bay, in Martinez. I love that he writes so affectionately of his upbringing in Northern California which includes an extended family stretching from his mom’s family cattle ranch near Stockton to his paternal grandparents San Francisco home, and from Lake Tahoe to Laguna Beach. His decorating style – and approach to living and entertaining – reflects his laid back, outdoorsy upbringing … elevated but never fussy and captured beautifully in his book, I Love California.
Last week Nathan returned home to Martinez for an event celebrating his third book, I Love Decorating, at The Spotted Cow, a very cool pop-up vintage home market. The ladies of The Spotted Cow rolled out the red carpet for hometown icon Nathan. More on The Spotted Cow later.
Nathan lives in Southern California with partner and fellow designer Eric Hughes. Their homes in Malibu, Oaji and Brentwood are featured in Nathan’s books and other big-deal publications like AD, Veranda, Elle Decor and Modern Lux. Many of the articles are paywalled and I gave up trying to link them. This 5-year old Quintessence tour of their Malibu home offers a wonderful look into their style.
For 15 years Nathan ran a popular home store in LA. One of its unique features was a full kitchen for hosting private luncheons and dinners in the store. Oh, to be a lucky guest. Last year, after a decade-long break from retail, Nathan opened a new showroom in West Hollywood to feature his California Collection of fabrics and wall coverings as well as antique and vintage finds. It’s on my list of places to visit on my next trip to SoCa.
He had samples of his fabrics at the book event. The plaids, the stripes and florals … swoon.
I’m loving the Vintage Oak Leaf and Stuart Stripe for the new house.
Back to the book event, it was the hottest day of the year so far and despite a nice breeze coming off the Carquinaz Strait and portable coolers inside, everyone was hot and sweaty. Everyone but Nathan who looked cool as a cucumber in his standard navy blazer and suede loafers. I wish I could tell you I had a scintillating conversation with my new pal. Sadly, that was not the case. I blathered incoherently and generally embarrassed myself. As you can see, he looked a little stunned by the gushing fangirl in front of him, but recovered himself and was as gracious as could be.
Thankfully I didn’t pass out after my thrilling moment with Nathan. But I did head straight to the bar for an ice cold refreshment. In between shopping, sipping, nibbling and gushing I ran into a few blog readers – which is always so much fun – including Dana, who is a friend of a friend, and her friend Lori. And Tammy who was wearing a colorful, beaded necklace that I wanted to ask her about it but we lost track of each other. It looked very much like this one that I saw at Evereve last week. Tammy, if you’re reading, please let us know. (Update: necklace by Bauble Bar purchased at Luck Lafayette; I think it’s this one or something very similar. A statement.)
Nathan’s written three books, the first American Style: Classic and Effortless Entertaining, followed by I Love California: Live, Eat and Entertain the West Coast Way (my all-time favorite and a love letter to our beautiful state), and his just released I Love Decorating: Creating Stylish, Thoughtful and Personal Spaces. I hope they’ll be more coming.
The Spotted Cow
The Spotted Cow is a pop-up vintage market stocked full of beautifully curated vintage and vintage-inspired pieces. While they have a permanent storefront, the shop is only open a handful of times a year. The next pop-up is September 10-13.
From what I can tell, the shop is run by five talented, vintage-loving ladies.
They did an amazing job hosting this celebratory event for a hometown icon. It was a lively, hot-summer-nights vibe, with a DJ spinning 80’s & 90’s tunes, and a bar stocked with local Balestrieri wines and pitchers of Nathan’s White Wine Sangria … from which I happily indulged.
The buffet offered an array of delicious nibbles by Sunflower Charcuterie and the dessert table looked amazing, but in a rare show of restraint I steered clear. The beautiful flowers are by Angel’s Petals.
The shop was decked out with Nathan’s books, his California Collection of fabrics and wall coverings, and styled in an Americana-meets-California vibe that Nathan’s so good at achieving.
In addition to all of Nathan’s fabulousness, they have a wonderful assortment of interesting pieces.
A collection of Wedgwood Flying Cloud china caught my eye .. and well a blue starred pattern.
I caught Jim checking out a tiny Radio Flyer, I’m sure he had his little granddaughter in mind. And he was fascinated with a collection of tiny trophies. He graciously agreed to accompany me to the event and act as my personal photographer. Of course, he had a great time too … chatting with other guests and partaking of the bar and buffet.
Frank & Eileen Washed Linen Shirtdress
Let’s get to what I wore. First of all it was hotter than hades. Did your mom say that? Mine did. I planned to wear my new Frank & Eileen washed linen shirtdress, but thought twice about it given the scorching temps. Obviously, I went ahead and wore it anyway and it was totally fine because, as advertised, the linen kept me cool. Or as cool as I could be under the circumstances. At the very least I looked somewhat polished and pulled together while melting. I also wore my new Splendid sandal slides that I mentioned last weekend.
Back to the shirtdress, a year ago I took advantage of Frank & Eileen’s ReLoved (resale) site to sell a linen set. The set was snapped up immediately and I elected a store credit instead of a payout. I’ve been sitting on that credit ever since so it was time to put it to good use. I love the F&E shirtdress style (note it has a shirttail hem) and own it in this denim and this lightweight corduroy, so I thought a linen version would be a safe bet. My only complaint … no pockets.
Alex Mill makes a very similar dress (at a gentler price) with pockets. It has a straight hem with a nice side seam button detail.

I’ll be taking a little summer break and this will be my last communiqué until August 1st. Am I going somewhere fabulous? I wish. I’m enrolled in the summer session at our community college to knock out a course I’ve been avoiding. It’s a required course for me to progress in my seemingly endless quest to get my college degree. Hopefully, before I turn 90. In order to set myself up for success it’s best that I focus my attention on the class which is 4 days a week for 6 weeks and involves lots of reading and writing. I know it’s pathetic that I can’t manage that and my regular life too … but I know my limitations and it’s what I need to do. Thanks for understanding. I know you have way more exciting summer plans and won’t even notice I’m gone.
Meanwhile on Instagram the Snowberry Rewind series will continue. And I’ll share snippets of the Folly’s progress when it picks up again in the next week or two.

Thank you for the absolutely lovely blog. I look forward to “Make Mine a Spritzer” every Saturday morning; it’s become a ritual to sit with a cup of coffee and read your beautiful dispatches. Also, as a displaced California girl, I love reconnecting with my home state. I can also relate to your educational pursuits. After earning a graduate degree and working in a mind dulling career I went back to community college to earn my AA in floriculture and become a florist. My only regret was that I didn’t follow my passion earlier. My worst day as a florist was still far better than my best day as a corporate minion. I was an older student pursuing my degree so I can relate. It took me a decade take a class a semester, working full time and raising a family. It was hard. Take the time off to really enjoy this class. I will miss your posts though. Good luck!

I’m so tempted by the Rory dress in the new bright colors but does it wrinkle. I just hate ironing especially in this heat!!! I think I’ll go with the classic cotton!
Leslie! I ironed the dress when it first arrive and have worn it several times since without reigning. Linen wrinkles, but I think the dark fabric makes it less noticeable and I don’t think going to be a labor intensive dress. That said, the cotton is wonderful too. It’s just a great style. xo

Congratulations on going to finish your degree!:) I decided to get one in my late forties and slogged through community college and then UCLA and graduated at 51. Such an amazing personal best for me. I have my graduation sash over a door in my house still!! So I get it…keep going!
I once met Judi Dench as a young actress in her dressing room after a show she was in, and I was just rubbish to converse with;my boyfriend now husband of 37 years, looked at with worry and embarrassment at the gobbledygook coming out of my mouth it was horrendous. I could have been drooling….
I have that dress I found at a 70% discount in a store winter sale, it is so perfect.

I so miss the Spotted Cow. We have our fair share of vintage/antique stores out here I do visit from time to time. I did not know he hailed from Martinez. I am right there with Jim and Saigon. When I was in Thailand many years ago, my girlfriend and I visited a tailor to have suites made. You can’t beat the prices and as you know being a petite, it was nice to have clothes fit perfectly. I would like to travel there in January/February to get away from the cold and snow. Winters can be long here.

Juliet, getting on with your courses over summer will be something you’ll look back on with pride. As a single Mum in the late ‘80’s I thought it prudent to go back to UBC part time to complete my BEd degree. I taught without it for 5 years before having children, but it seemed to be good to have my degree if going back to teaching was in my future. I loved being on campus as a 39-41 year old and took in so much more in my mature brain! Literature was my major , as well as updating my methodology courses for elementary teachers. It was an easy approach to take courses over time and still work part time in the interiors business, which I ultimately continued in. But reading and analyzing so much good literature was enriching…and besides devouring such good writing, I was such a good role model for my kids then. Juliet. So jealous you go to meet Natan. I have been a longtime fan since he was in Million Dollar Decorators. I have all his books, but my fave is I Love California. The Valley oak fabric looks lovely. Sounds like the most fun day. What a pretty shop. I would be there all the time if it was near here. The Wedgewood china is beautiful!

I love the F&E shirtdress and find it to be the most flattering. Yes it’s pricey, but the details and how it fits, cannot compare to any other shirt dresses. I always pack mine too (well in the white light denim) as they never wrinkle. The dark blue linen looks great on you. Yay you for taking time to prioritize you and doing this. I’m sure it’ll be nice to do this class without worrying about the blog! xo Kim
Kim! I always forget about Million Dollar Decorators. Wish they’d bring it back … we need some decent decorating shows. I’m loving the linen, especially in the darker color so the wrinkling doesn’t bother me at all. I hate ironing. xoxo

I am a huge Natan Turner fan and I love it that he came to Martinez…I met him once at some design influencers thing and he couldn’t have been nicer. He is real just like his decorating style! You have me pining for those Splendid sandals-love them- and the F&E shirtdress perfection. I have been coveting the Meghan in natural linen!!
