Fun in Paso Robles with my OG Blogger Friends

Today on Weekend Meanderings a trip to Paso Robles for a creative retreat with the OG bloggers plus what I packed and wore.

Happy weekend, friends!

Can you believe it’s mid-October?

I guess we’re pushing late October.

It’s nearly Halloween.

This week I spent a few days in Paso Robles for a small group creative retreat.

Can I tell you all about it?

HOBNOBBING WITH THE OG’S IN PASO ROBLES

If you follow me on Instagram you may know I was in Paso Robles last week hobnobbing with some Original Great bloggers. Women who inspired me to get into blogging and I bet they’re favorites of yours too.

Kris, Cindy, Mary Ann, Jennifer, Me & Annie

Cindy (Cindy Hattersley Design), Annie (Most Lovely Things), Mary Ann (Classic Casual Home), Kris (Driven By Decor) and Jennifer (A Well Styled Life). Kim initially planned to join, but couldn’t squeeze it in given her upcoming trip. What was I doing there? Good question but never look a gift horse in the mouth. And speaking of gifts, look at our cute swag bags.

The retreat, organized by Cindy, Annie and Mary Ann, and held at Cindy’s beautiful home in the Paso Robles area, was a packed few days of learning, sharing, inspiration and ideas related to the big-wide-world of blogging. I soaked it up like a sponge.

Cindy offered some pro photography tips.

WHAT TO WEAR IN PASO ROBLES IN THE FALL

It was warm in California last week and that made packing pretty easy. I hauled out my summer dresses, sandals and light jackets. It was just like packing for a summer vacation in the wine country, or any warm weather destination. And it gave me a few ideas for our upcoming cruise. I hope it gives you some ideas too. You’re probably sick of hearing me say it, but if you don’t have a collapsable rolling rack for packing you’re making life harder on yourself.

Day 1

On our first evening I wore a Banana Republic maxi dress from last summer. Along my Vince shirt-style jacket which is one of my favorite purchases this year. I’m heartbroken that it’s sold out. This is similar.

Day 2

Our second day was a long one, breakfast through dinner. I was super comfortable in a plaid dress by The Great. It pairs beautifully with my Paige cropped denim jacket. Another favorite purchase this year that’s also long gone. Ugh. This one is similar but with a raw hem. You can search Poshmark … I found an XS here, a medium here and here, and an XL here. Poshmark also has a small in cream.

Day 3

On our last day the temperature hit 99. This Rails dress was a late summer purchase that I hesitated over it because … it was late summer. But I’m so glad I bought it and I’ve worn it on repeat. It will definitely be in my suitcase for our cruise at the beginning of the year. It has a smocked back and is very comfortable. I wore it with an oversized shirt by Cloth & Stone. This one from Mango is similar. Wearing a shirt as a jacket is an idea I got from wardrobe guru Allison Bornstein. I’ve been reading and loving her new book.

Annie said my The Great dress matches Cindy’s house. She’s not wrong.

The best thing about road trips, or local travel, is you can bring more clothes. I zipped all my dresses and jackets into a garment bag. And I brought a pair of sandals for each dress … a big no no when packing a suitcase for air travel. I brought my layered necklaces, which I get a lot of use from, and wear them together or on their own. You can also buy the paperclip chain separately. And because it’s a chain … the length is easily adjustable.

WHERE TO STAY IN PASO ROBLES

Cindy recommended the Stables Inn as a cute place to stay just minutes from her house and a few blocks from the historic downtown. The boutique motel is owned by a local family and Cindy’s family and friends often stay there when visiting for holidays and her guest rooms are full. The motel even has a Bunk House (family suite that sleeps six) that Cindy’s family has booked.

I stayed in a California King Room … and it felt a little like a rustic W hotel room. You know what I mean … small but well laid out and equipped. I appreciated having a small refrigerator because I’ve taken to traveling (road trips only) with my milk frother so I can make my own cocoa in the mornings.

Evocative of white washed stables … everything about the motel is horse-ranch charming. Teak benches outside the rooms encourage guest to enjoy the warm days and cool nights. And in the center of the parking an island oasis with two fire pits and several seating areas set up for guests to enjoy morning coffee and afternoon wine.

In the morning coffee, tea, yogurt and coffee cake (yum!) is available in the lobby along with another cute seating area.

I drove home Thursday afternoon. Palo Robes is a-just-under-four-hour drive from my part of the Bay Area. It was a breeze driving down, but on the way back I ran into commute traffic which extended the drive by two hours. Sigh. But, no matter, after spending three days with these inspiring women in Cindy’s beautiful home in the Paso Robes wine country my head is still floating up in the clouds. Mary Ann gave us these cute Louis Sherry tins of chocolates before we departed.

A huge thank you to Cindy, Annie and Mary Ann for putting so much thought and effort into creating a beautiful experience during our three days together.

And that’s what I have for you this week.

Let’s see what’s inspiring Kim and Elizabeth …

  • I love how you travel with your frother! That sounds so much like something I’d do. When I travel, I want all the creature comforts! Probably because travel makes me feel out of my element and having all my usual stuff feels more like home. I’m glad you all had a great time. That’s an amazing group of women!

    • Kelly, I’m with you on that. Travel is fun and interesting, but also challenging. And having the ability to make my morning cocoa gets my days off to a good start. What I didn’t say it that on morning number three my milk froze in the little refrigerator (I put it in the wrong place) and I had to go to Starbucks. Sigh. xo

  • Hi Juliet
We were in Paso Fobles last month and stayed at airbnb on Thatcher Winery
Is there a waitlist for this west coast creative blogger group! ??

    • Laura! An Airbnb at a winery … that sounds like so much fun! I’d love to get back to Paso soon for a wine tasting tour … and spend more time exploring the cute town. I’ll have to get your recommendations! xo

  • Hi Juliet,
It sounds like you had a good time and learned from each other. The Stables Inn looked like a nice place. You brought your creature comforts with you so you were okay. Wow, lots of driving, especially returning back home. You are a trooper.
Like your dresses, smart way to dress.
    Enjoy your weekend.

    • Thanks, Kathrine … warm weather makes to much easier packing. It’s raining today … so we were very lucky. Hope you’re enjoying a wonderful weekend. xo

  • Seriously, what fun. I haven’t done a girls get together in such a long time. I enjoyed seeing some different pictures of Cindy’s home. So nice to see all the familiar faces.

    • Karen … fun is the best word to describe it. Of course, I should say there was lots of work involved but such good company made every minute feel like a grand time. xo

  • This was so fun to relive. You looked darling every day. It’s good to have your fresh insights.

    • Mary Ann, you’re the best and I was beyond thrilled to be included with all you OG’s. You, Annie and Cindy put together an amazing few days and I loved every minute. xo

  • Juliet! What a fun post to read the minute I got home to reminisce about the lovely time we had laughing, talking, and sharing ideas…beautiful photos of Cinndy’s gorgeous home…which is very much like a boutique hotel…you’re spot on about that!
    xx

    • Annie, it was so much fun to be with you last week. You’re always so upbeat and a wealth of information mixed with good humor. Can’t wait to read what you have to say about the retreat today. Thanks again for putting all the work into organizing an amazing few days. xo

  • Hi Juliet — You always look so casually stylish. I would love to learn more about blogging from some OG’s — including you! What a fun place you stayed!

  • My husband and I took a sabbatical after selling our business and moved onto a horse ranch for a year in Paso, west side of 101. It was the most fantastic experience, something I can’t believe we did (we are NOT spontaneous people!).
The downtown square is a lot like Healdburg’s, and really most old towns in California. And a quick 30 minutes to the beach, love Cayucos!
Thanks for the post, love your blog.

    • Oh wow, that sounds like an amazing experience and good for you for stepping out to do something new and exciting. I’ve heard of Cayucos but haven’t been there … better add it to my list of places to visit. I do love a coastal town. Hope you have a wonderful Sunday. xo

  • It sounds like a great time for you creative ladies. Will we find out what was in your gift bag? I’m always looking for ideas. 99 degrees last week in Paso! I live 40 minutes from Paso but have been away on a U.S. adventure with my husband the last nine weeks. My garden will probably look terrible when I return in a month. Yikes!

    • Good morning, Greer … I’m so intrigued by your adventures. How fun to be on an extended holiday and likely seeing some wonderful new places in our beautiful country. I bet your garden does just fine … but you’ll have lots to do when you return. As for the gift bag, Annie of Most Lovely Things has a description of the contents on her post today so be sure to check it out. Happy travels! xo

  • Juliet,
It looks like you had a wonderful time! Paso looks like a beautiful place to visit.
I cano only imagine the laughs and knowledge shared in such a fabulous group of long-time bloggers, each one is fabulous! I am sure that you brought just as much to the group as they each did and learned from you as well.
Too bad there is not an East Coast blogging group.
Cindys’ house is beautiful! It is fun to see more views of each of her special and collected pieces. A lovely family home.
Your hotel is so cute! What a fun place to stay.
I never travel anywhere with out my hot chocolate or a way to make it in the morning. I love that you brought your frother.
    Have a great weekend.
    xo Elizabeth

    • Happy weekend, Elizabeth! You must start an East Coast group … you have such a lovely home and town for retreating. You and I are on the same page with our morning hot chocolate … thanks goodness my frother is portable. I left this out of the post, but on day 2 my milk froze in room’s mini-fridge and I had to go to Starbucks. I made do. xo

  • Hi Juliet,
The Rails dress in the blue and white print has the wrong description online. It calls it a “Mini.” Can you please tell me if it is 100% cotton?
    Enjoy your blog!
    Thanks, Cyndi

    • Hi Cyndi … sorry about that, not sure what happened. Yes, the Rails dress is 100% cotton and it has a lovely weight and feel. Here’s a direct link to it and please let me know if it doesn’t take you to the right place. Thanks for reading and have a wonderful Sunday! xo

  • Juliet, I am so sad I didn’t get to do this with you all. What a fun time and l am sure you all learned so much from each other! Cindy’s house is beautiful and so is that cute hotel. Those bags are darling.
I loved your cute outfits and the light jackets for each. Can you believe how hot it was last week? Wow.

I ordered the rolling rack now as it couldn’t come before I left on this trip, but I will have it for next time!
So sorry about the traffic! That was crazy 6 hours?
Miss you and can’t wait to catch up and hear it more. xo

    • Missed you so much, Kim. Next time! Can’t wait to tell you all about it when I see you and catch up on your amazing trip. You’re going to love the rolling rack … next time you pack it will be game changer. xo

  • OMG I guess we are the OLD BLOGGERS! You had just as much to offer as we did…thank you so much for coming and the kind words about my home. Wait and the AMAZING hostess gift that was filled with items on my wish list!
