Holiday Gift Tags You’ll Want to Order Now + More on the Weekend Post

Today on weekend meanderings, a fun-for-kids cookie candy turkey craft, my cousin Lydia Makes Art and you’ll want to order her beautiful holiday gift tags now, a Serena & Lily soiree showcasing a Scottish-influenced holiday space by designer Kari McIntosh.

Happy Saturday, friends!

It’s time for the weekend post with Kim and Elizabeth. Our weekly roundup of inspirations and goings on.

We’re officially in Thanksgiving week. Thanksgiving shopping is in full swing and I can barely find a parking spot at the grocery store.

This week is also the calm before the post-Thanksgiving shopping storm. No sooner will we put away the leftovers when it’s off to the races for 1) Black Friday, followed by 2) Small Business Saturday, 3) Cyber Monday and 4) giving Tuesday. Did I get that right? May I smugly tell you that I skip straight to two and four, bypassing one and three altogether. Not because I’m super organized and have already done my shopping, but because our life is in a new stage.

Autumn leaves.

Back in the day I collected holiday wish lists from the littles over Thanksgiving weekend. And the first Friday in December I made an annual pilgrimage to Toys R Us with those lists in hand. My strategy was to arrive at 8pm – they stayed open until midnight which was a big deal back then – and get my shopping done in a couple of hours. Then, over the next few weekends, gifts were wrapped and put under the tree. Some were wrapped, packed, and shipped to cousins in Washington which involved a dreaded trip to the UPS store.

Flash forward to present day and all our littles live far away. Most of our shopping involves sending gift cards for their favorite stores. Not nearly as fun, but looking on the bright side, we avoid all the holiday crazy. And that’s not nothing. But, you probably have a different situation and I wish you the best as you run the gauntlet over the next month.

Speaking of the littles, niece Shelby and I met up with niece Sophie and her littles in Auburn this week. I’m happy to report that grand-niece Haddie loves hot chocolate. Like auntie like niecie.

Little girls enjoying a hot chocolate.

I don’t miss holiday shopping but I do miss all the pretty packages spilling out from under the tree. My mother was big on beautiful wrapped presents. If she had her druthers no gift would ever be opened. If it must be opened, it should be done carefully with paper, ribbon and bows neatly saved. Tearing into gifts was frowned upon. I’m not fanatical like that but I do love pretty paper, ribbons and gift tags. And those are a few of the topics we’ll discuss today. There’s a lot to cover, and I’ll be on vacation next Saturday, so let’s consider this a double issue.

Cookie Candy Turkey’s for Thanksgiving

When my mother was still with us I was the Thanksgiving host for our family. I loved to make these turkey cookie candies for the kids places at the table. They got a kick out of them and I did too. They’re a fun edible craft to make with kids to get them excited about helping out and setting the table.

I decided to resurrect the cookie candy turkey tradition and to my dismay the chocolate stars and scalloped cookies are no longer easy to come by. No local stores carry the chocolate stars but I was able to find them online. I didn’t have the same luck with the scalloped cookies … nowhere to be found, locally or online. Reluctantly I settled for Keebler Fudge Stripes. A reasonable facsimile, but not the same.

Ingredients for Cookie Candy Turkey's.

What you’ll need: milk chocolate stars, caramels, harvest candy corn, fudge stripe cookies

Here’s an Instagram Reel on how to put them together. It’s pretty self explanatory, the only real direction is that the caramel needs to be softened slightly – until it’s pliable enough to ahere to the caramel, cookie and candy corn. 10-15 seconds in the microwave will do it … place the caramels on microwave-safe wax paper first.

Hunter Rain Boots

It’s officially rainy season, it’s storming now, and I took my Hunter rain boots to ReChic to consign.

Blue Hunter Rain boots sitting next to blue Dutch Door.

Why would I do that in the midst of a rainstorm? Well, I meant to do it a month ago. I love the boots and I wanted them forever before finally buying them, but they’re not comfortable on me. They’re the classic tall style, and the top hits me in an awkward spot on my less-than-statuesque legs. That said, I love Hunter boots – and I need rain boots (like right now) – so I’ve been debating between the original short rain boot (mid-calf) – I kind of like the glossy version too – and the short rain boot (ankle-ish). I also like this waterproof slip on shoe. I’m a sucker for a platform. And then there’s the color choice … there are a lot of options.

While I was debating this major life decision, Hunter’s Duck Boot style appeared in my Instagram feed. The algorithm always knows. I swooned, hit purchase, and they’re winging their way to me.

Since I was headed to ReChic to consign my boots, I did a quick scan of my closet and grabbed a few other pieces to take as well. I didn’t have time to shop while I was there, but several things caught my eye including a gorgeous Chanel wool coat. The shop is brimming with wonderful pieces for fall, winter … holiday party season, etc. They also carry wonderful gift items … it’s my go-to spot for girlfriend and hostess gifts.

In addition to doing more consignment selling – and shopping – in the last few years I’ve made an effort to be more intentional about how I dispose of no-longer-needed clothing so it doesn’t end up in a landfill. Most of the clothing that leaves my house is either consigned, given away or donated. But some things don’t fit neatly into these buckets … maybe they’re stained, torn or for some other reason not acceptable for resale or donation and its tempting to put them in the trash. This week I listened to a podcast interview with Kristy Caylor, founder and CEO of Trashie, a clothing and tech recycling platform. I’ve ordered their ‘take back bag 3-pak’ and I’ll say more after I’ve given it a whirl. In the meantime, you can learn more here.

Serena & Lily Palo Alto Holiday House

Tuesday night I met up with Kim to attend a soiree at Serena & Lily’s Palo Alto Design Shop.

The event showcased Serena & Lily’s Holiday House inspiration space, A Love Letter to Scotland, designed by Kari McIntosh.

Over yummy hors-d’oeuvres and cocktails Kari shared how her recent travels to Scotland informed and inspired the design. I’m going to share a few photos from Kari’s Instagram because with so many people milling about it wasn’t possible to get a full shot of the room.

Holiday House at Serena & Lily

A vision in green and blue, the space is a master class in layering patterns and textures, and mixing old with new. Antique and vintage pieces from Kari’s Burlingame shop KMD Antiques & Design Atelier intermingled with Serena & Lily’s new pieces create an old world, yet contemporary feel.

Kari, right, wore a beautiful plaid gown

Speaking of feel, the space is incredibly warm and inviting. Once we settled into the green velvet sofa we were in no hurry to leave. And with an attentive catering staff filling our glasses and passing trays of yummy nibbles … I mean they practically had to throw us out and lock the door behind.

The first thing I noticed is the Wisley wallpaper in Vintage Indigo. If you look closely you can see tiny lady bugs and fireflies sprinkled about. And the fabrics and trims throughout the room are swoon worthy. I particularly love the two sided – floral and pinstripe – drapery panels.

A pair of antique iron sconces from France are from Kari’s antique shop are true statement pieces. A boar on one side and owl (not pictured) on the other.

A set of four Guy Buffet golf prints caught my eye and I snapped a picture to send to Jim … who loves Scotland and golf. Preferably together.

On the opposite side of the room against the backdrop of green clover print wallpaper,  a woven sideboard is perfection styled with a gilded bamboo mirror and antique Staffordshire wally dogs.

The chartreuse velvet sofa sitting area are comfortable and cozy and I love the artichoke print pillow fabric … and fringe trims.

Kari’s vintage blue and white Spode plates along an antique washbasin and pitcher, and Scottish horn mugs are all available in her antique shop.

Table | Chairs | Chair Fabric Front & Back | Raffia Tassels | Lantern

Christmas decorations make the space feel all the more magical. And their holiday gift wrap is exactly what’s needed for packages under this tree.

The antique and vintage pieces throughout the space can be found at Kari McIntosh Design.

It was a lovely evening and I might make the trek back to Palo Alto to see it again, and do a little shopping. I forgot to tell you the best part … I won the drawing for a $500 gift card! No one was more surprised or delighted than me to win and everyone kept asking what I was going to buy. Well, I can’t spend money under pressure (Jim begs to differ) so I decided to wait and think it over. I adore the Wisley wallpaper and wonder if it might work in the powder room of our Little House on 4th?

I’ve run out of time and space for today, but I’ll have more to say about Serena & Lily’s Palo Alto location another day. In addition to the Holiday House space, the rest of the store is fabulous too and Kim and I did a couple of laps around oohing and awing over just about everything. More to come, but in the meantime, Kim made a Reel of our enchanted evening.

The Cutest Holiday Gift Tags from Lydia Makes Art

I am so excited to share this with you today! Lydia, my third cousin (Lydia’s grandmother and my mom were first cousins), is a senior in high school and wonderful artist. She’s also an entrepreneurial young woman who has created an online business, Lydia Makes Art. Recently her mom posted her work to social media and I was enchanted so I asked Lydia if I could share her work with you … and she said yes!

Lydia’s Holiday Gift Tag Collection ~

In addition to these three adorable prints, Lydia also makes customized tags!

Each tag comes in a set of 20.

Lydia and her family live in Memphis. Her older sister, Merrill, is a junior at the University of Georgia. And Lydia will be headed to Wake Forest University next fall. She plans to major in English and entrepreneurship. Way to go, Lydia!

Lydia tells me she’s always loved being crafty and creative. During the pandemic she started making gift tags for family members and her mom encouraged her to expand her reach to a wider audience.

In addition to holiday tags, Lydia offers personalized stationery, as well as occasion gift tags and cards.

She also takes commissions and says her favorite things to paint are houses, pets, and quotes. I’m going to commission a house portrait of Snowberry.

  • Your story of late night shopping at Toys R Us brings back wonderful memories of our trips there 30 years ago! We would hire a sitter on a Friday night in early December and do most of our kids’ and the nieces’ and nephews’ gift shopping. We had our lists and checked off as we went. Sometimes we would find an unexpected treasure we hadn’t thought of and it came home with us. So much fun. This year our first grandchild will be 14 months old at Christmas and we are excited to see her reactions to the gifts we purchased. Thanks for your fun post and the good memories!

    • Kelly … so many of can related to those Toys R Us days! And the secret Friday night trips. It’s wonderful to be with the littles on Christmas and see the tree, gifts, and everything through their excitement. So wonderful. Wishing you a very Happy Thanksgiving. xo

  • Shopping at Toy are US, remember those days? Shopping was fun way back then. Black Friday started on the Friday after Thanksgiving, not 2 weeks before and it actually had great deals and door busters. Now days I am not so sure if you are really getting any deals.
We are at the same stage of life that you are, we mostly give gift cards or money to the older niece and nephew. It is morning but for the best because I don’t want to shop and have the stuff go to waste.
Love Hunter boots but I got rid of mine for the same reason and have a pair of Le Chameau and a fun pair from Joules. Your new boots are fabulous! They “look” just your style.
Haddie is adorable! You are the cutest nieces and grand nieces and nephews! How fun to have a day out.
It looks like you had a wonderful time with Kim and S&L, congratulations on winning the gift card. I immediately contacted Kari about those sconces, sadly they are HUGE! I think they may have come from.a French chateau.
Love these gift tags, and tiny works of art. I might need a painting of my pups!
    HAve a wonderful weekend Juliet!
    xo

    • Elizabeth … yes, they are HUGE … but I would have loved it if they were going to your home! I hear you about Black Friday … for a while stores were opening at midnight and people were exiting the Thanksgiving table to hit the stores overnight. Madness. I think that’s died down, but it’s still crazy and I agree that the ‘deals’ may not be as great as we think. Anyway, I’m blissfully out of it all. Woo hoo. Interesting to hear you felt the same way about the Hunter boot. I did love them though. Happy Thanksgiving! xoxo

  • I am almost done with my shopping, the last people to shop for are the hardest – my husband (who wants and needs nothing), my 91 year old mom, my brother and my 2 20-something nephews.
    Men are hard!
I know what you mean about the spilling presents thing, and I will not give it up without a fight. Still buying presents for my girlfriends and now have great-nieces and nephews. I even give to a few of Whitten’s friends’.
I am sure I will tire of it someday soon.
As far as Serena and Lily goes – I want to move in. If we had one near us, I would probably be redoing my house non-stop!
    Happy Thanksgiving Juliet!

    • Gray! That’s what Kim and I said … first of all, we’re moving in and they can’t stop us. And, second, we need to redo our houses immediately! I should have said I do buy small gifts for friends and important people, like my hair stylist (most important) … but the days of trying to figure out what to give the adult men and women who need nothing are behind me. I do love to give a gift when someone tells me exactly what they want and there’s no guessing game. I’d love to go back in time and arrive and my grandmother’s house to see the sparkling tree and all the presents … it was magic! Happy Thanksgiving and godspeed with your holiday shopping. xo

  • Dearest Juliet!

Your beautiful blog is simply my most favorite!
Thank you for taking me with you on your exquisite meanderings!

    I Love You.
    Kym

  • I too used to shop at Toys R Us late at night. Fastest way to get it done.
We are listening to the same podcast! I found the information from Trashie so compelling. Love that Serena and Lily wallpaper and forwarded the info about Lydia to my daughter in law who is cleaning out her family home for her dad. Would web sweet to have a picture for him.

    • That’s a great idea, Leila. Wasn’t Toys R Us at night the best … I’m not sure why more people didn’t take advantage of those quiet hours. Wasn’t that an intriguing podcast interview, I’m excited to give Trashie a try. Happy Thanksgiving! xo

  • Hi Juliet, Thank you for your great ideas! We are about the same size and coloring so you are very helpful in helping me get dressed! Regarding the rain boots, you might try Sperry Topsiders. They are very comfortable and I have taken my dog for long walks in them with warm dry feet and no rubbing! Happy Holidays to you and your family! Susan

    • Hi Susan, great suggestion. I’ve had Sperry rainbows back int eh day and they were very comfortable. Happy Thanksgiving! xo

  • Fun post, Juliet! I’m in Palo Alto at our family home for 5 days and just missed that lovely Serena and Lily event by a day!

In addition to having the roof repaired on our 120 yo old Craftsman, I am sorting my dear mom’s clothing, dating from the 1960’s — fun and poignant. I will look into your Trashie suggestion for worn items.

Happy Thanksgiving and enjoy your vacation!

    • Hi Joan … so close but yet so far away. Trashie might be just what you need … I’m very curious to give it a try. How fun if we could have met up with you at S&L. If you have time, run over there to see the beautiful Holiday Houses spaces. They’re so lovely. xo

  • May the best girl win! And you did! Can’t wait to see what you use the gift card on. I am anxiously waiting on your new home stories and pictures. The night at S & L looked lovely. As did you and Kim. I had not heard of Trashie before, and signed up for their emails to give them a try as well. Makes so much sense!

    • Hi Deanna … I’m really intrigued by Trashie and we shall see! Thanks for the kind words … I’ll start a series about our new house design in build in the new year. And with that in mind I’m mulling my S&L purchases. Happy Thanksgiving. xo

  • Hi Juliet — Totally agree with you about the tall Hunter boots. Too tall! And they are heavy too. Love those cute California duck boots. They would look like a mess after one wear here in Maine, though! I took a big load of clothes to Goodwill recently. Really nice things, but I just wanted to empty my closet. And then I was at a consignment store the other day and I saw a whole bunch of my things, ha! What a fun evening at Serena and Lily. Love the more layered look with S&L items. Very different from the usual S&L look. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving! Thankful to have you as a remote blogging friend!

    • Molly! I’ve heard from many who feel the same about tall boots … and I thought it was just me. Love the feeling of a cleared out closet … doesn’t it feel good. Thankful for you and our wonderful blogging community. Have a wonderful celebration with your family and that amazing menu! xo

  • Lovely and informative post Juliet.
I just ordered Barbour Wellington Boots in Green.. the “Abbey”. Ironic since it’s summer here? Nope. Just spied a snake in my coastal garden and hoping they give my legs some protection

  • Juliet, Love the leaves you snapped! You should frame that. The turkeys are awesome. Max wants to make them! He says he remembers those cookies as a kid. So fun.
Kudos for buying less. We are in those years too. We give cash or cards to the young people, nothing for adults in the fam and get less now for our kids too. Makes it easy and less wasteful. We all have too much.

I have to say I feel like small local stores have a lot. I always find things there. They will go away if we don’t buy from them! Also looking forward to giving Tuesday. Much better way to use our money than on more things from container ships..

Lydia is so talented! Wow I love her cards. I will order some for the holidays. Love hearing about her and wishing her luck at college.

We had fun at S&L. You got great pics of the show house. I loved meeting Kari too. What an inspiring night.. I am so glad you won the $500.
Hope you have a relaxing week and enjoy the downtime with no deadlines next week. xo

  • Juliet, I forgot to say thanks for sharing Trashie. There is also something Max and I want to get called Ridwell that you subscribe to that takes other recycled materials, but it’s not available here yet, so I will check this out!
The rain boot thing!! My tall Hunters have been in dry dock for years as they are not comfy….I do have a short bootie with a wedge that is comfy from them. I love all your choices. Hope I get to wear mine more this year.

  • Hi Juliet,
Congratulations on winning the gift card! It sounds and looks like a fantastic evening and l love the picture of you and Kim together!! Yes the wallpaper is very dreamy….l am thinking about my powder room too lol. Have a beautiful Thanksgiving and a lovely relaxing time with family xox

  • Love your humor, insights and taste..

I have these green Hunter boots and love them❣️I added the Sherpa insoles which makes them extra cozy. I had them on yesterday to check my beehive! I have even worn them to church!
Too bad they don’t work for you because I adore them. I’m only a tad taller than you- maybe that why they work for me.

You will find a great replacement -no doubt?!

    • Hi Kathy, thanks for the sherpa insole suggestion, I’ll search for them now. My new boots arrived and they’re the right size but a little loose near the heal, so this might be just the thing. Happy Thanksgiving! xo

  • Hi Juliet,
That Serena and Lily Holiday House is just so pretty! I am normally a neutrals girl and don’t do wallpaper, but those photos make me believe otherwise! What a fun event that was for you both. And, congratulations on winning the gift card – I think that wallpaper in your new home is a great idea….
Sweet little Haddie and her hot chocolate is very heartwarming. It’s so much fun to see the holidays through the eyes of the littles. She’s going to adore your candy turkeys!
I love Lydia’s new and creative business venture. It’s very encouraging to see her interest in paper goods. Everything is so ‘digital’ nowadays, I worry we won’t have quality stationery/paper goods for long. This makes me hopeful it will be around for a little while, at least.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours, Juliet. I’m grateful to have you hear every Saturday.
    Janet

    • Hi Janet, I felt the same way about Lydia’s work … there’s nothing I love more than stationery. I certainly don’t use it as often as I once did, but thank you notes never go out of style and they work just as well for a birthday or holiday greeting. Wishing you the very best Thanksiving! xo
