Thanksgiving is just 12 days away. Are you hosting? Guesting? Are you ready? Let’s discuss.

Thanksgiving Recipes

This week I joined a group of six favorite creators to share some yummy Thanksgiving recipes. In case you missed it I contributed my Sweet & Savory Cornbread Stuffing. It’s super easy … and totally delicious. Stuffing can be a tricky thing at the family Thanksgiving table. Recipes have been passed down and tradition reigns supreme. New ideas are not always welcomed. I remember my aunt once made scalloped potatoes instead of mashed which shocked and scandalized my grandmother. It never happened again. My dad and cousin felt the same about cranberries. Don’t bring those fancy cranberry relishes near them, they wanted the Oceanspray canned jelly front and center on the table … presented in a crystal dish, of course.

Anyway, all the recipes look so good and I’ve pinned and printed every one.

Thanksgiving Table

If you’re hosting you’ve probably already planned your table setting. Last month, with the help of Ali Bentz, I created a festive centerpiece.

I’ve had to pair it back a bit to set the table for six.

What I’m Wearing for Thanksgiving

Spartina 449, a new-to-me brand, reached out to ask if I’d be interested in a collaboration featuring their Holiday Collection. For the most part I shy away from brand collaborations, mostly because I only want to share things that I actually love, buy and use in my everyday life. Plus, they can be a lot of work, and I worry about getting it right and not letting anyone down. But I was intrigued and before dismissing it out of hand I took a look through their collection and brand website. Well, I’m not sure where they’ve been all my life but Spartina 449 is right up my alley. So, I said yes.

A lifestyle brand with a Southern, coastal flair, founder Kay Stanley imagined her brand to life from Spartina Cottage on Daufuskie Island, South Carolina. From traditional wardrobe staples to resort essentials, travel accessories, jewelry, bags and more … it’s truly something-for-everyone-and-every-occasion brand. In addition to their website, they have over a dozen brick and mortar stores, mostly in the Carolina’s, but as far as Rhode Island. And their pieces are sold in specialty retailers and boutiques throughout the country. I was pleasantly surprised to see their pieces are sold in our local McCaulou department stores. The brand sent me this location specific carry-all case – the Northern California version – which I recognized from our local Hollyhock stationery store.

The collaboration is perfectly timed because I’ve been mulling over what to wear for Thanksgiving. With that in mind I focused on fall-appropriate dresses. There are so many options and I narrowed it down to this A-line, pullover dress in Ikat print and this flowy floral number.

Swayed by the pretty blue Ikat print, I decided on the half-zip, pullover dress and it arrived this week. Made of Peruvian cotton with a touch of spandex, it’s super soft and comfortable. And I think it’s really versatil … change up the shoes and it can be worn in any season. I’m loving it with my new suede boots.

Thanksgiving outfit sorted.

Yes, that’s a bandage on my nose. I went for my annual skin check and had a few things zapped off and a couple others biopsied.

I also opted for a silk scarf in matching Ikat print and colorful border and wrapped it around the handle of my bag. Look at me performing advanced style maneuvers.

By the way, if you’ll be guesting at Thanksgiving, Christmas, holiday parties, etc., … the brand’s two-bottle wine caddy is an ideal way to transport – or gift – wine. I’ve already ordered two more for hostess gifts … I’ll include wine, of course! You could also fill it with artisan olive oils and vinegars. The cady comes in a bunch of print styles and each includes a fish shaped corkscrew. I love mine in a navy plaid print?

A few of my favorites ~

The Colbert’s on Ina’s Be My Guest

After reading Ina Garten’s Be Ready When the Luck Happens I started rewatching her Be My Guest series … and caught up on newer episodes. She has such interesting guests. And I want to make all the recipes.

Sour Cream Coffee Cake ~

My BFF Jane broke her arm this week. Ouch. When she text me of her predicament I was watching Ina’s episode with Stephen and Evie Colbert. They recently published a cookbook of favorite family recipes, Does This Taste Funny? Fun title (they’re a fun couple).

Anyhoo, while the Colbert’s were making their way to Ina’s house, Ina was baking her Sour Cream Coffee Cake from Barefoot Contessa Parties. That gave me the idea to bake it for Jane and her family to enjoy this weekend … she definitely won’t be cooking.

Generally I don’t make something for others that I haven’t tested first myself. But, didn’t have that luxury so I baked the cake, slid it onto a doily and into a cakebox and delivered it to Jane’s doorstep hoping for the best. She says it’s yummy. But, what’s she going to say, it’s terrible?! I feel fairly confident about it because Ina never steers us wrong. If you’ve got a houseful for Thanksgiving I think it will be a hit.

Here’s the recipe. I substituted pecans for walnuts in the streusel topping. And I doubled the maple glaze.

Capri Sun Cocktail ~

Back to Stephen and Evie … as per the format of Ina’s show, they came ready to make one of their recipes, a very simple Green Goddess Dip – with crudités and potato chips. It’s the simple things that are the best … and, as we already discussed, favored at Thanksgiving. While Evie was making the dip Stephen spouted off fun facts on the origins of Green Goddess dressing. He said it originated in San Francisco in the 1920’s, so I did a little fact checking (very little) and confirmed it. The story goes that the Palace Hotel’s executive chef created it in tribute to actor George Arliss and his hit play The Green Goddess.

After Evie made the dip, Stephen mixed a favorite cocktail which he calls the Capri Sun. He referred to it as “summer in a glass” … I know it’s not summer … it’s rainy and cold here. But the drink’s vibrant color reminds me of our current fall foliage. It’s fresh and light so why not serve it Thanksgiving weekend? It’s easy to make and the ingredients can be easily placed out on a sideboard for family and friends to mix themselves. I gave it a try last night … OJ, Vodka, Campari, Club Soda … it’s very spritz like and quite good. Jim loved it too.

  • I empathize with your Scandinavian skin issues. I too am Scandinavian of a “certain age” with a lot of sun damage. I too have had many zaps and biopsies over the years. Recently one biopsy caught up with me. I had MOH’s surgery for the first time 4 weeks ago…on the very tip of my nose…closest to the sun, I guess. I was reassured all of the cancer was removed & I am healing well. PHEW!
I so enjoy reading your blog. Thank you, thank you!

    • Hi Sue, thanks for your comment. I sorry about your MOHS surgery but glad it was caught, removed, and you’re on the mend. I had that surgery on my chest four years ago and was shocked by the size of the scar … for such a tiny area to be removed. It took a year, but the scar is barely detectable and no issues since. My dad once told me that after age 40 it’s just patch, patch, patch. I didn’t really understand what he was talking about at the time, but I sure do now. I don’t know about you, but sunscreen wasn’t a factor in my teen years and I slathered on a lot of baby oil. Oof. Hope you have a great weekend. xo

  • I’m so glad you found the Spartina brand. I live in coastal South Carolina and have been a fan for years. I can attest that the totes and handbags are beautiful and excellently made of premium materials – and I own quite a few!

    • Hi Sheran … it’s so fun discovering new things. I’m glad to hear you’re a fan and can attest to the quality. I’ve been doing a deeper dive today and pretty much want to replace my whole wardrobe with Spartina pieces! Happy weekend! xo

    • Good morning, Gray, apparently I’m the last to know … but glad to finally be up-to-speed and fully onboard. Happy weekend! xo

  • The chandelier in your dining room is just so lovely and classic. May I know where did you find it?
(who is your electrician in Orinda? )

    • Hi Peyton, thank you. The chandelier is a custom Ro-Sham-Beaux. So many options to choose from – the size, style, hardware material, beads, trims, etc. Mine is the Malibu style. Steve Smario, in Lafayette, did all the electrical here at Snowberry. Love and highly recommend him. xo

  • I too am enjoying Ina’s latest show. I have made that coffee cake several times. It’s a family favorite. Love the wine caddy; What a great gift for the holidays.

    • Leila! I’m going to have to make another coffee cake – maybe Thanksgiving weekend – for us to enjoy. It looked so good and hard to to take a slice! xo

    • Well, Cindy … apparently you and I are the only ones not in the know. Maybe because we’re west coasters. Anyway … always fun to add a new style source to the repertoire. Happy weekend. xo

  • Hi Juliet,
Love Ina Garten and her show and the Eric Roper episode is just so amazing as he is so humble and a Buddist! I can not afford his restaurants, but I so appreciate his mastery. And it is Ina!!Love your TG recipe thank you. Happy weekend xo

  • Love the outfit and hope the skin issues are all minor. I had two pre-cancerous lesions removed over the past few years. Good to get them checked out.

    • You’re right, Hilda … we have to add a skins check to our annual health appointments. It’s always something but good to be in front of any potential issues. Hope you have a lovely weekend. xo

  • Hi Juliet,
What a lovely thing to do for Jane your BFF . I so relate to doing things like this. You are her well wishes gift via Ina’s Sour Cream Coffee Cake. I think I also baked this many years ago and recall it being excellent.
You are so wise to get your annual body scans. Like you I baked in the sun with baby oil as well. I get zapped too, and had one biopsied this summer, it was a pre cancer. Do you have brown spots on your face that just suddenly appear? My dermatologist said she can zap those. Warned me they could come back darker. Takes 3 weeks to heal, for me more like 4 weeks I think.

  • Juliet, I cracked up about your Thanksgiving. That is so my family. Everyone wants the bland stuffing we have grown up with and yes we had the Ocean Spray cranberry with the can shape on our table too. I like to make it on the stove now with walnuts.. Everyone has an opinion!

Yout table is so so pretty.

I love that dress on you.. Ikat is one of my favorite things and the way you wrapped your bag looks great! Love it and the boots.

Good for you with the dermo. I too have had many things zapped. We just have to keep up on it – being Californians and always in the sun I guess.

I think that was really nice you delivered that cake to Jane. What a sweet friend. It looks like a million dollars! I have to try it…Somehow I’ve lost my bundt pan.

I will try the Capri Sun. Love Colbert. Looks like a good one. Hope you enjoy your weekend. xo

  • Juliet, you look fabulous is the irate dress! But then again you look beautiful in everything.
We are having family Thanksgiving with one sister/husband and my brother and his family. There are very specific requirements about what people like to eat. So basically my brother is hosting and making an entire dinner, they sent the menu and if there is something we like that we cannot live without we are bringing that dish.
To be honest, Thanksgiving to my is all about the pumpkin pie, potatoes and the yeast rolls. Aside from family and friends.
I loved your stuffing/dressing recipe and I too printed everyone’s recipes out, they all looks delicious.
I have yet to decide on an outfit, sometimes I just feel like wearing comfy clothes so I will have to confer with the others to see what they are wearing.
I love Ina! And I make that coffee cake often, it is scrumptious, if you like sour cream coffee cakes.
Hope everything comes back negative from the doctor. I just had my annual mole mapping and had a tiny thing removed too. Next up MRI mammogram.
    Have a wonderful weekend Juliet.
    xo

  • Ummm that coffee cake recipe is older than Ina….my elderly cousin who died in her nineties about 10 years ago made a coffee cake that was essentially the same….she had made it for about 45 years by the time she died. The good part is that she made MANY of these coffee cakes and I never heard of anyone who did not love it!
    🙂

  • Hi Juliet — Love your dress! I know Spartina from the handbags. Didn’t know they had a line of clothing too. I make a coffee cake similar to Ina’s, but it has chocolate chips in the cake and the topping. It is a tradition in our family at Christmas. The cocktail does look so pretty, though we would need a brown one here, since all the leaves are gone… Have a great week!

  • I absolutely adore your Spartina selections! ❣️ I’ve been a loyal fan of the brand for years now. Their vibrant and playful pieces perfectly match my Florida lifestyle, and shopping in their boutiques while vacationing is always such a delightful experience! Each visit feels like a treasure hunt filled with fun finds!

    • Hi Rosemary! I’ve heard from so many Southern friends who love Spartina … and now I’m in on the secret. I’d love to visit one of their shops … I just adore all there things. Happy Thanksgiving! xo
