Revisiting Thanksgiving Tables Past, Making Cute Cookie Candy Turkeys, and More

Today on weekend meanderings, Thanksgiving is just  five days away and I’m revisiting my Thanksgiving table settings past, making cute Cookie Candy Turkeys, and eyeing a pretty Thanksgiving weekend sweater.

It’s time for the weekend post with Kim and Elizabeth, our weekly roundup of inspirations and goings on.

Thanksgiving is just five days away … eek. Are you ready? On Thursday I went to the grocery store hoping to get ahead of the crowds, but, nope, it was too late for that. I did get everything I need though … to make Goat Cheese Mashed Potatoes and Cranberry Orange Loaves. Guesting is so much easier than hosting.

Thanksgiving Tables Past

One of the things I love most about the Thanksgiving holiday is that the big to-do falls at the beginning of the long weekend leaving three more days to relax and enjoy a little time off, time away, and time with family and friends.

I scrolled my phone this week to look at past year’s Thanksgiving tables including last year’s pumpkin-centric centerpiece.

 

Thanksgiving Cookie Candy Turkeys

I get such a kick out of making (ahem … assembling) Thanksgiving cookie candy turkeys. The first year I made them, 1992 if you must know, I used them as place cards for Thanksgiving dinner by tucking small cards between the caramel and cookie. My nieces, who were quite little at the time, loved them. They’re a fun thing to assemble with kiddos.

The idea came from a Pillsbury Classics Cookbook … remember when they were sold at the grocery store checkout? Obviously I’m no food snob, because some of my favorite recipes came from these cookbooks.

All you need to make cookie candy turkeys is chocolate stars, caramels, striped cookies and harvest candy corn. As you can see from the cookbook cover, the originals were made with striped fudge cookies that had a scalloped edge. The scalloped edge cookies are no where to be found these days which is a shame but we have to make do.

Pretty Fall Cardigan

This pretty soutache trimmed cardigan caught my eye in Nordstrom last weekend. I was immediately drawn to it and had to laugh when I realized I was wearing a very similar thing. I like what I like.

Anyway, it looks like an ideal Thanksgiving weekend wear piece … with jeans or a pretty skirt.

 

Her Majesty the Queen Mystery Series

A week or two ago I mentioned J.S. Bennett’s cover blurb in support of Paula Sutton’s Pudding Corner Mystery Series. J.S. Bennett is the author of Her Majesty the Queen Investigates murder mystery series. I’m about halfway through The Windsor Knot, the first book of the series. It’s totally delightful and I look forward to making my way through the rest of the series. A worthy goal for the upcoming holiday weekend.

The American Revolution

Did you watch The American Revolution on PBS this week? Jim and I were engrossed. If you haven’t see it yet, it’s excellent. I mean, what else would you expect from filmmaker Ken Burns, along with Sarah Botstein and David Schmidt. The film, or docu-series, is made up of six episodes of endlessly fascinating storytelling and imagery.

One of the many things I appreciate about the series is the light it shines on the integral roles of Native Americans, African Americans, both free and enslaved, and women … all of whom tend to be left out – or minimized – in what Ken refers to as our ‘top down’ approach to history.

Even if you’re fairly well versed in the history of the revolution (I thought I was) there are so many aspects and nuances that you may find eye opening. It’s so much more than taxation without representation.

Anyway, the series is streaming on PBS.

Ken and Sarah were guests on the On With Kara Swisher podcast this week for more fascinating discussion on the film.

The American Revolution: An Intimate History, the companion book is a work of art … and a great holiday gift.

    I could not agree more, guesting is a lot easier than hosting. Although this year we are hosting and not having turkey. There will be pie!

    I love your little turkeys! A cute and whimsical treat to eat and perfect for place cards.
    I am not a food snob either and loved those books along with the little Martha Stewart books, always delicious things to make.

  • The American Revolution is excellent. Wish it could be shown in our schools. Thank you for the Thanksgiving ideas. I have a grandchild who will have fun making the turkeys in a couple of years.

  • We finished the American Revolution last night to tears. Such a good series. Breaks my heart to think what the Founders were willing to give up and the conditions the rebels fought under. It inspires me to be more active for freedom and democracy. No Kings indeed.

  • Juliet I wish I was being a guest! Your mash potatoes sound so good and bread looks pretty! We made your Thanksgiving turkey cookies with my 20 somethings last year and they had so much fun. I think it was a challenge and they love a little project that got everyone off screens. They tasted good too. I think those olds school Thanksgiving guide books that used to be at the grocery are a gem! My grandma and mom had a lot. I think of them as the precursor to the internet recipes! My grandma would always order the KGO Cookie Recipe book. I still have it. She got me one and I still have it. Should share it on the blog. LOL.

    I have started the Revolution and loved it and unfortunately Max and I fell asleep before the first episode ended. We are going back in tonight. I love Ken Burns. I think we need to start it before 9 o’clock!
