My Thanksgiving Mashed Potato Fiasco + Holiday Gift Ideas That Are Useable & Clutter-Free

Today on weekend meanderings, my Thanksgiving mashed potato fiasco + useful, useable, clutter-free holiday gift ideas, a chocolate, espresso holiday dessert, and a few other things.

Happy Saturday, friends!

It’s time for the weekend post with Kim and Elizabeth, our weekly roundup of inspirations and goings on.

How was your Thanksgiving? I hope you’re enjoying a leisurely post-feast weekend. I’m hunkered down reading, watching football, walking the dogs and avoiding all the holiday shopping cray cray (do the kids still say that?). That said, I do have to buy some gifts.

Before we get to that a word about my Thanksgiving which was lovely aside from a mashed potato fiasco from which I’m still reeling.

All products and links included in this post are selected by me and some may be affiliate links.

Thanksgiving Mashed Potato Fiasco

Want to hear about my Thanksgiving mashed potato disaster? Good because I’m going to tell you anyway.

We were invited to Jim’s son Kyle’s wife Melody’s parents (did you follow that?) for Thanksgiving. What can I bring, I asked. I make a great mashed potato dish that travels well, I said.

We’re talking about Ina’s make-ahead goat cheese mashed potatoes,. A dish I’ve contributed to countless Thanksgivings to rave reviews.

A little background. Our recent move to the pied-à-terre required many difficult decisions … bring this, store that decisions. The pied-à-terre kitchen is tiny, so I only brought what I felt absolutely necessary and that would fit into the cupboards in an organized manner. Somehow my hand mixer didn’t make the cut.

Ina’s recipe is fairly straightforward and the only equipment called for is a food mill. I don’t own a food mill and in the past I’ve used my hand mixer. With my hand mixer in storage I decided to order this food mill. I watched Ina’s recipe video and using a food mill looked easy peasy.

While the potatoes were simmering I unboxed the food mill and ask Jim if he’d assemble it. He grumbled about there being no instructions but got it done. I spooned the potatoes into the mill and started to crank but nothing came through the bottom grates. I started to panic. Jim flipped the grate and that worked. But the grated potatoes did not resemble Ina’s video. I was alarmed but decided to take an optimistic approach and add the remaining ingredients.

With the goat cheese, butter, half n half, etc. mixed in, it still in no way resembled the creamy mashed potato dish I’d made a dozen times before. It was a gloppy, goopy, gummy mess. That was it, it was time to man the panic stations.

Realizing there was no time for a do-over – not even Amazon (curse their name) could get a hand mixer to me in time. So the gloppy potatoes went into a baking dish and into the refrigerator until time to bake. Maybe, just maybe I hoped, they’d turn into their intended consistency during the baking process.

As the potatoes baked they smelled heavenly and I hoped for a Thanksgiving miracle. Sadly it was not to be. They tasted fine, but the consistency was all wrong and I had no choice but to pack them up in my insulated casserole carrier, put a smile on my face and prepare myself to face the humiliation music.

I’m wearing a Frank & Eileen corduroy shirt dress over a Michael Stars striped cotton sweater (similar) and Stuart Wietzman suede boots (similar).

Oh, and a new bag by Wendy Bellisimo!

Thankfully, Melody, her mom and sister cooked all day and produced a wonderful Thanksgiving feast (as you can see from her beautiful prep photos above) and everyone was kind enough to overlook my mashed potato fail. I, on the other hand, may never recover.

I hope your Thanksgiving dinner was a triumph of culinary wonder. But if you had any type of disaster, please share. Misery loves company.

Chocolate Espresso Dessert

Melody is a lover of espresso martinis and came up with an idea for a chocolate espresso dessert which is really fun for the holiday season. She followed this recipe for the cake and this recipe for the espresso whipped cream topping. She made the cake in a single layer and used coupe glasses like cookie cutters. Clever … and delicious!

Holiday Gift Ideas that are Useable & Clutter-Free

The holidays are very low key for me and I don’t have to produce a ton of presents wrapped perfectly and placed under the tree. While there are pros and cons to my holiday situation, I am the envy of many friends because I’m able to avoid the worst of the horror show that can become the lead-up to Christmas.

Jokes aside, I do need to purchase a few holiday gifts and that means it’s time for annual holiday gift ideas. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I’m a very practical gift giver and I like to stick with useable gifts tailored, of course, to the recipients tastes and interests but that will get used up in one way or another and won’t create clutter in their homes. In other words, they won’t feel obligated to stash it away in a cupboard to be retrieved only when I visit their homes. And who among us has not done that?

I’m focusing on adult gifts today. The kids in our family get real gifts … something specific they’ve asked for or gift cards as many of them now prefer. I’m happy to oblige with gift cards although I’ve made the decision to forgo sending them electronically in favor of purchasing actual gift cards that can be wrapped and presented, which somehow makes me feel better about it.

All that aside, these are a some of the gift that I’m buying for friends and family. Most are small things that also work well as hostess gifts, stocking stuffers, or combined to create a fun gift basket.

Table Christmas Tree

In the beauty category …

Caudalie Beauty Elixir facial mist. It’s become a favorite and it comes in a 1 oz travel or stocking stuffer size too.

Aesop’s Resurrection Aromatique Hand Balm, I recently received a tube (thanks, Jane) and highly recommend. It smells heavenly – like the relaxation room at a good spa. It comes in a countertop size as well and could be paired nicely with the brand’s Resurrection Aromatique Hand Wash. They also offer nice gift sets.

This citrus scented whipped body butter is divine.

Santa please leave this nail care kit under my tree.

This bestselling body care set.

Candles and other beautifully scented things …

If your friends and family aren’t skiing the Alps this winter, bring the Alps to them with Voyage et Cie’s Les Pinedes collection in a classic highball or French cut vase vessel.

Voyage et Chic candle on tray.

Anything Diptyque is fabulous.

Brick soaps make beautiful gifts … and look so lovely set out on a small silver tray.

Lemon basil scented shea butter bath soap. Swoon.

Yummy treats …

After watching Ken Burn’s The American Revolution I’m ordering this Teas of the Boston Tea Party set for Jim.

Mrs. Bakewell’s Original Cream Tea is one of the best gifts I’ve ever received (thank you, Kim) and I’ve gifted it many times since. You can order it direct or on Gold Belly.

The Sister Market Holiday Gift Box is something I love to give.

Olive oil and infused vinegars … personalize this oil and vinegar set it only two extra days lead time.

Mother Myrick’s Lemon Lulu cake is a long time favorite.

California Native Wildflower Honey

Fancy Salt

Cocktail related …

I use these dried citrus slices all. the. time.

I’m obsessed with cocktail napkins like these, these, and these.

Jim says the bitters are always welcomed by cocktail loving friends, like this Woodford Reserve gift set.

A champagne stopper … every home needs at least one.

Three bottles of French champagne on bar counter.

Gifts from your kitchen …

Orange Cranberry Bread

Chocolate Dipped Shortbread Cookies.

Gifts that don’t meet the criteria exactly, but are generally always welcomed …

These cashmere lined leather gloves with a screen-sensitive index finger.

This cozy winter scarf.

These washable wool plaid throws.

Golf lovers (I know this is random) …

I’m tempted to order this marble putting green cheese board & knives for Jim.

And these golf ball wine stoppers seem essential.

What about this golf bag bar tool set?! Ok, I’ll stop.

Books …

Books fall into a gray area. They’re usable and I could never them clutter. After being read and enjoyed they can be added to the book shelves, displayed on a coffee table, passed along to someone else, or donated to a neighborhood free library. Some recent favorites ~

The Essentials: The Art of Interior Design

My Southern Kitchen: From Suppers to Celebrations

The Homebird: Creating Joyful Interiors Where Old Meets New

The Look

Squeeze Me: Lemon Recipes and Art

The American Revolution: An Intimate History

And finally, book adjacent, this Jane Austen Christmas puzzle.

What my nieces are getting …

L.L.Bean’s mini-boat & tote personalized with an acronym of one of my dad’s favorite expressions – I wrote about that here. I’ll tie a colorful scarf to the tote handle and fill it with a few things I’ve picked up along the way … like Caudalie’s Beauty Elixir and California Candle Co.’s Italian Cashmere candle (poured specially for the Frank & Eileen styling event at Flaunt I attended earlier in the year).

LL Bean Mini Tote with monogram.

Supporting our local businesses …

The past few years I’ve been much more conscious about supporting the local businesses that I love, as well as regional or national retailers that I’ve come to rely upon and who all struggle to compete against the behemoths. When the shock of a favorite store (or restaurant) closing hits, I have to ask myself, when was the last time I was in that shop or store? Have I taken them for granted thinking they’ll always be there? Am I part of the problem?

This statistic, shared by Shira Gill, blew me away. A little food for thought as we enter this make-it-or-break-it-month for our favorite stores.

Some of my favorite local, small businesses …

White Barn Home, Lazy K House, Orinda Books, Flaunt, ReChic, Eye for Pretty At Home, Elsie Green, Misto Lino Home, Makers Market, Zahra, and, for pets, Partners Place and Big Woof

Holiday Cards from Minted

After taking a several year break from sending holiday cards, I’m back on the wagon. I realized that in not sending cards I stopped receiving as many. I didn’t like that at all.

I ordered our cards from Minted which I’ve done in the past. They have a wonderful photo card selection and their web-site is easy to use. Plus my address book is already loaded and only required a few tweaks. I received our cards on Wednesday and had most of them in the mail yesterday.

Thinking Ahead to 2026

I also got out in front of my 2026 calendar planner situation. Paper planners are essential in my humble opinion. I can’t won’t adapt to an electronic calendar and that’s just that. For years I was devoted to Erin Condren’s classic coil-bound life planner. Last year I experimented with the brand’s softbound planner instead because it’s smaller and more portable. It worked so well I reordered. I chose a plain blue cover with my initials in the lower right hand corner. I usually order earlier, but my procrastination paid off with sale pricing!

  • I am glad to see that about buying local instead of Amazon. I miss so many stores I loved that have closed.
I too don’t receive cards like I used to and I especially love cards with designs. I remember mom hanging up so many cards as we received them. Sigh…
On another note I am going to make your shortbread chocolate dipped cookies. They are so easy and yummy!! Happy holidays!

    • Nanci! Isn’t it the truth … there are stores that closed 10 years ago – and more – that I’m still sad about. My mom hung our holiday cards too … and there were so many. It can be a big chore during the busiest time of year but being on the receiving end is wonderful. The shortbreads are so easy to make … enjoy. And Happy Holidays! xo

  • I hope you and Jim have a lovely Christmas! Enjoy the break from your blog and I am already looking forward to that first Saturday in January when you are back.

  • How did I ever miss AIS??!!
Many years ago we thought we’d put the potatoes in the food processor. Our result was the consistency of grade school paste… we later learned about the science behind this disaster. Never again. You’ll recover….. but it will take awhile.
Thanks for the gift suggestions. I found a few ideas I really needed.

    • Karen! Oh my gosh, yes, the food processor – miracle that it is – will destroy a potato! I suppose I’ll recover; it may take years. Glad to have you up-to-speed on AIS time. 😉 xo

  • I loved your mashed potato saga! It will be something to laugh about for years to come! Remember the time…….
Your posts are always fun and interesting, love your style!

  • Sorry to have to unsubscribe but your content format has so little contrast that it too difficult to read comfortably.
It is probably just me, although i have not noticed a problem anywhere else.
Best of luck with your new house.

  • Juliet, early in my first marriage I had my first husband’s family over for Thanksgiving. I was young, a new bride and made most dishes for Martha Stewart Entertaining. For some reason I decided to make the mashed potatoes in the cuisinart. You can see where this is going. They were a gloppy mess of wall paper paste. Although I am a pretty good cook, I have never attempted them since. I buy my mashed potatoes from Markethall every year. It’s a running family gag. So sister, I am with you. I have a potato ricer too!

    • Leila! Thanks for sharing your traumatic experience. It’s very difficult to recover, right? I’ll keep Markethall in mind for next year. Happy Holidays! xo

  • Juliet, I can totally understand how you felt about the potato saga. Many years ago I decided to save time during the holiday and use my Cuisinart to mash the potatoes! I quickly discovered that they turned into a gummy mess. Since that long ago time, I will only mash my potatoes by hand with a proper potato masher. Haha! Wishing you and Jim a wonderful Christmas, and I look forward to seeing you here in January. Xx

    • Karen! You’re not alone. Apparently the food processor is the source of potato angst for many. Live and learn I suppose. But the trauma lasts a lifetime. Ha! Have a wonderful holiday season … I can’t wait to see you in January! xoxo

  • Years ago I made thanksgiving dinner for my little family of four and my brother in law and his girlfriend. In the chaos of everything being ready at once I mistakenly used baking soda instead of corn starch to make the gravy. As you can imagine it looked like a science project gone bad. It foamed up and ran all over the stove and floor. No gravy that year

    • Camille! Oh no … but an easy mistake to make. Why do these things only happen before important occasions with guests arriving?! Why?!!!! xoxo

  • Thank you for a wonderful year, Juliet! Love your thoughts, as always, especially the great reminder to shop local! Also, I am unreasonably happy that you also use a paper calendar. I can’t go digital – which means I have to make appointments “when I am in front of my planner” so not always convenient, but no system is perfect, I guess? (I’d love to hear if you have any suggestions!) lol. Happy Holidays and have a nice vacation!

    • Jenny! I am forever booking appointments only to come home and find there’s a conflict and then I have to rebook. I bought the smaller planner last year in order to head this sort of thing, but so often forget to put planner in purse. I wish I had a better solution … I guess electronic calendar lovers would say that’s the way to go. But, like you, I just can’t and so I guess we have to deal with these little inconveniences. Sigh. Happy Holidays! xo

  • Like other readers I also made the Cuisinart potato wallpaper paste in the 70s. Now I just mash them with an old potato masher and we have lumpy potatoes which assures my guests that they are homemade! My disaster this year was to forget my beautiful, fresh chopped marinated salad that was to counteract all the rich foods at the table. I saw it in the refrigerator when I was taking out the pies. We ate it the next day. Love your blog.

    • Kristen! Oh no, your beautiful salad! These things happen. I’m known for forgetting the bread or rolls in the oven until they’re burned to a crisp. I love a good old fashioned potato masher too … and either use that for a rustic potato or the hand mixer for a smoother one. Wishing you a happy – incident free! holiday season! xo

  • Juliet, I am sorry about your potato fiasco. It is such a pain when you do not have your tools and things when you are baking or cooking.
I am sure that they tasted fabulous.
It looks like a delicious dinner.
Your cards are fabulous! I stopped sending cards last year and I too am back on it. This year I am trying to get back to “the old school” things in life.
Great gift picks! So many great things for all of our loved ones.
Have a wonderful, relaxing weekend. Enjoy the games and your books.
    xo

  • Happy holidays, Juliet! Your mashed potato disaster reminds me of a tomato sauce I insisted on making for a crowd at my now daughter-in-law’s family ski home. I decided it needed a little more salt at the very end and the salt mill broke open dumping the contents of the entire jar in my sauce. It was inedible! These things happen! Great Christmas gift ideas. Your taste is impeccable. I always enjoy stopping by! 2026 will be a big year for you!

    • Molly! Oh no … what a horrible feeling that must have been. Sigh. Well, these things happen and we just have to be good sports, laugh at ourselves and move on. Easier said than done. Wishing you the happiest holiday season!!! xo

  • Happiest of Hollidays, Juliet. I have followed you for years and have enjoyed your post full of fun and wit. Looking forward to continuing this road together.

    • Pam! I love reading this … happy holiday’s to you! I look forward to getting back on the road in a few weeks. xoxo

  • Juliet, I have to laugh about the potatoes because I have done the same by over whipping them. I use a mixer and now barely mix them. Ugh took me years to get it. You look super cute. Sounds like a fun night. What a beautiful dessert made by Melody!
Love all your suggestions for gifts as always. The small boat totes is the cutest idea with the scarf.
I love your Xmas card. It’s the perfect picture of you and Jim.
I have a beef with Minted so I have to look elsewhere this year. They fouled up my card two years running. I wish I was early as you were ordering .
Hope you enjoy the rest of the holidays!
    xo

  • Hi Juliet,
Happy Holidays to you and yours. Thank you for all your stylish advice this year. You are an inspiration!
Your Thanksgiving outfit was perfect. Have you shared the links before? It looks like a sweater over a dress? I would love the links.
Always searching for cotton sweaters as I am allergic to wool and cashmere.
Thanks, and Happy 2026! Will look forward to your return to the blog…
    Cyndi

    • Cyndi! Sorry, I didn’t include the links, but you’re right, it’s a Frank & Eileen corduroy shirt dress over a Michael Stars cotton sweater. I’ll add the links to the post … thanks for pointing this out. Wishing you the happiest holiday season and I’ll see you in January! xoxo

  • Hi Juliet,
I feel for your total mess up on your mashed potatoes, but it looks like you were able to savage the recipe. I feel for you, worked so hard, and when you are bringing a dish to your hostess home you want it to be super right and good,
Yes misery loves company, on Wednesday I had an oh my event with my 8 dozen Pumpkin Cookies that I have been baking since high school (yes a long time ago). Well I know where things went wrong I think. I could not bring them over, I did everything to try to make them right but they were hopeless. Like you I had a big wine, then my husband asked if I wanted wine with that, Ha ha, added fuel to the fire. Thank goodness I had baked 4 dozen yummy chocolate chip cookies too to bring.
That and a nice bottle of wine and gorgeous roses saved the day. I was still processing the screw up for days.
I know you are a great cook. I bet you are counting the months till you move into your new home.
Are you still at your P.O. Box in Orinda 234?

  • Juliet – we are on the same page with the gift thing – I only give usable things if I can. No more knick knacks.
I am giving several of your items as well!
Great post and thanks for not pushing gobs and gobs of clothes and knick knacks at me!!
My Christmas is less crazy as well. We have that in common.
    Merry Merry!!

  • Hi Juliet,

Enjoyed your holiday blog with great gift ideas, beautiful photos and a few laughs! I have my own Thanksgiving fiasco from few years back – doesn’t everyone? lol

After moving to a new home, I accidentally christened my new kitchen by dropping the entire pot with green beans and sauce onto the glass casserole dish, part of a silver family heirloom serving piece. The glass casserole broke and beans and sauce ran over the counter and onto the floor! With family on the way, I hurriedly prepared a new recipe of the green bean dish and no one knew until I “spilled the beans” (pun included!) after we finished our meal. I still don’t think it was funny. Holiday meals can be like that.

Good ideas for buying useful gifts and shopping small businesses for them. Mint does have a huge selection of photo cards – yours with family is so nice. I love receiving cards too, but find the number going down each year, sadly. I’m also old school when it comes to keeping a calendar with appointments….give me paper and pencil!

Wishing you and family a great holiday season!

  • Well, we all know you are entitled to a little break for the holidays, but I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say how much we will miss you for the next few weeks! Enjoy your time off and take lots of pictures to share with us!

    • Trisha! Thank you so much, I appreciate your kind words and look forward to rejoining everyone in 2026. Happiest holidays to you and your family! o
