Spring Inspiration for Your Closet, Table, & Bedroom, Plus a Few Yummy Recipes + More

Today on weekend meanderings, spring is in the air and I’m sharing some pretty clothes, Easter table ideas, a colorful bedding collab, a few yummy recipes and much more.

Happy Saturday, friends!

It’s time for the weekend post with Kim and Elizabeth. Our weekly roundup of inspirations and goings on.

I’m dropping in from my sabbatical because my folder of weekend meandering worthy topics filled up faster than expected. Today is sort of a double edition packed with random things that caught my eye, crossed my path, and came out of my kitchen, that are too good not to share right away.

Isn’t is amazing how winter turns to spring seemingly overnight with little noticeable transition. One day we’re bundled up inside and the next tulips are blooming and the temperature nears 80 degrees. And then we’re back to rain storms.

We don’t have tulips in our garden, but our hellebores are blooming.

Purple hellebore blooms.

I was delighted to see spring tulips blooming last week at the Stanford Shopping Center. The only positive thing about trekking across the Bay for follow-up appointments at Stanford Medical Center is the Stanford Shopping Center across the street. It’s fabulous.

While waiting for the stores to open I stopped in La Baguette Patisserie and was delighted to find pains aux raisins. They’re my favorite and not easy to come by these days. Anyway, I had to have one – they heated it up – with a cup of tea before I did a quick run through Bloomingdales. This striped blazer caught my eye. I’m pretty sure it’s this one from ba&sh, one of Kim’s favorite brands. And it’s on sale – half price.

I thought immediately of Plum Sykes in her recent Substack looking so chic in a Peter Hawking designed pinstripe pantsuit at Sarah Burton’s Givenchy debut show.

Image: Plum Skyles Substack

In her Substack piece, Plum also raves about Champagne Ruinart’s blanc de blanc. I forwarded a screen shot to Jim and asked him if it’s available in the U.S. and if he could track it down. He said yes and yes. Sante! If you’re visiting the wine region of France this summer, Ruinart looks like an amazing place to visit.

Speaking of French Champagne, I’m headed to Sonoma tomorrow to retrieve my quarterly Chateau Sonoma Bubble Club allotment. I was talking with my trainer, Dana at Framework Fitness, who mentioned that Costco’s champagne is surprisingly good … Kirkland Signature Brut. And, yes, it’s champagne … produced in France by well regarded  champagne house Manuel Janisson (recently sold to LMVH). Wirecutter has good things to say about it, and I found this more recent review. Dana says she keeps it stocked in her home and it’s being served at all the baby shower’s she’s attending. Good to know. With Jim retiring and scrutinizing my spending, Costco champagne is worth exploring.

I didn’t mean to get off on a tangent. In other shopping news, this Veronica Beard maxi dress caught my eye and imagination.

I’d love to wear it to spring and summer weddings … and summer garden soirees. Slight issue though, I have no invitations to weddings or soirees. Hope springs eternal and I walk to the mailbox everyday in anticipation. Anyway, you’re probably more in demand than I am and maybe this dress works for you. Send snaps. Shop the entire look here on my LTK shop.

While we’re on the topic of dresses I’ve been drooling over and dreaming of this one since I saw it while shopping with Kim. She told me to try it on, but I didn’t because I didn’t think I had anywhere to wear it.

I haven’t been able to get it out of my mind so I hunted it down. It’s light weight and floaty and I love the snake skin print and pleated, handkerchief hem. The sweater is not attached, so the camisole top dress can be worn on its own. And so can the sweater.

Nothing’s changed, I still have no place specific to wear this beauty, but it has a timeless quality and feels very all-season-all-occasion … plus I had a gift card. So when the right occasion presents itself, I’m ready.

To find desperately needed moments of peace and tranquility I’ve been rereading Julia Reed’s books starting with her first two books of essays, Queen of the Turtle Derby and Other Southern Phenomena and Ham Biscuits, Hostess Gowns and Other Southern Specialties. Julia is one of my favorite contemporary writers and I miss her voice (she sadly succumbed to cancer in 2020 at just 60 years old), keen eye, and observation of the absurd. Thank goodness she left behind a ton of great writing, including nine books.

My very favorite of all her books is The House on First Street, documenting the renovation of her historic New Orleans’ home which was interrupted by the devastating Hurricane Katrina.

The House on First Street | But Mamma Always Put Vodka in the Sangria

Dispatches from the Gilded Age | South Toward Home

Julia Reed’s South | Julia Reed’s New Orleans

While pulling Julia’s books off the shelves I neglected to grab One Man’s Folly: The Exceptional Houses of Furlow Gatewood, the most beautiful coffee table book, and Dispatches from the Gilded Age. I found one but not the other and it’s too late to go through the shelves again, plus my eyes are shot. It’s going to drive me nuts, though and I’ll scour the shelves again tomorrow.

Serena & Lily recently closed their wonderful outlet in Vacaville. WHY??? They still have their Berkeley outlet, but the Vacaville location was bigger and better (in my opinion) and I found many discounted treasures there.

But there’s good news, they’re hosting a warehouse sale this weekend. It started Wednesday and runs through tomorrow. I’m sure there’s a ton of good stuff to be had at great prices.

The Vacaville outlet is a huge loss. I’ll never forget the thrill of finding our treasured south seas rattan sofa console there and so many other favorite things.

Serena & Lily South Seas console behind white sofa in great room.

Somehow I’ve collected more than my fair share of Serena & Lily trays. Round, square, and rectangular … like my most recent S&L acquisition, two Beaufort trays that sit on the lower shelves of our great room built-ins. One or both may end up in our Snowberry everything-must-go sale.

Serena & Lily tray on built-in shelf.

Anyway, who knows what wonderful treasures can be found at the warehouse sale. Also the stores and online shop are having a spring sale. 20% off everything and or 25% off and free shipping on orders over $2,500. If you’re hosting an Easter celebration, or there’s something you’ve had your eye on, check it out let me know what you find.

Speaking of Easter, it was my mom’s favorite holiday and our family frequently hosted our neighbors for a late afternoon dinner. I just had a flashback of sitting at the kids table and the boy next door (later my high school sweetheart) shooting peas into my milk. Anyway, my mom loved to set a beautiful Easter table and walking through the spring table displays at William Sonoma made me think about how much she would have loved all the pretty things.

These greens and white plates from the lattice garden collection are right up her alley. She collected eggs (alabaster eggs) and bunnies (bunny bowl), and had them all over the house and table.

If you’re hosting Easter dinner, William Sonoma has a collection of Ina Garten’s menu ideas.

Next door at Pottery Barn the bloom shop is going strong.

I swooned over this bedding situation. It’s the Garden Floral Ikat collection, part of the Kravet x Pottery Barn collab.

The garden floral print comes in wallpaper too. In addition to bedding, the collection includes much more including table top and these blue and white cachepots are divine. See the entire collection here.

This week I started using Saie’s Slip Tint, a lightweight tinted moisturizer with mineral zinc SPF 35 and hyaluronic acid with their Glowy Super Gel, an illuminating serum, layered on top with this foundation brush. I’ve previously shared my love for L’Oreal Lumi Glotion which I still adore and mix with Neutrogena’s Oil Free Moisturizer (with SFP 15). My recent brushes with basal cell carcinoma led me to finally heed my dermatologists advice to increase my level of SPF. Anyway, Saie is a clean beauty brand that I see recommended by all the usual suspects on blogs, Substack’s and Instagram and after using it all week I’m a fan. A light layer of super gel on top of the tint give me just the right amount of light coverage and glow. Leave it to me to increase my SPF during a week of storms.

Enough shopping, let’s talk about food.

I’ve been on a muffins-for breakfast-tear … yum. In my office days I made a batch of muffins every Sunday and popped them in the freezer for the week ahead. The legendary Model Bakery recently opened a nearby location which has quickly become a favorite. I mentioned it in my last post and shared The Model Bakery Cookbook. In fact I was there for breakfast – and extended chit chat – yesterday with BFF Jane. Anyway, I finally got around to baking their Blueberry Muffin recipe. OMG. I consider myself a muffin connoisseur and these muffins are next level good.

The Model Bakery cookbook on kitchen stand.

They taste like fancy bakery muffins, but they came out of my own oven.

All of my favorite muffin recipes are wonderful. Obviously. But one thing that bugs me is that they rarely produce the number of muffins that the recipe claims. A recipe claiming to yield 12 muffins might make 8-10 with my heavy hand. I use an ice cream scoop to dole out the batter which makes a properly sized muffin. The size muffin you’d find at good bakeries (I’m not talking Costco size).

I have two muffins for breakfast and they need to be just right. Anyway, this recipe says it makes 12 muffins and it really does make 12 properly sized muffins. They puff up nicely in the oven and are so light and fluffy. A well-portioned scoop of batter will muffin-top over the pan creating a teensy bit of crunch around the edge. Perfection.

Blueberry Muffins.

Full disclosure … I went off script with the recipe. It calls for 2 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour and I substituted one cup of all-purpose flour for one cup of whole wheat flour (something I learned from Jane Brody back in the 80’s and it’s become a habit). I also used canned blueberries because I forgot to buy blueberries at the store. And I added the zest of 1/2 a lemon into the batter just because I like it. The muffins are delicious, so there’s no telling how much more fabulous they’d be when the recipe is followed precisely. You can find the recipe in The Model Bakery Cookbook, and I’ve linked to a source for it here.

Not to bore you with the mundane (seriously, isn’t that what my weekend meandering is all about?) but, along with muffins – and hot cocoa – my breakfast includes a little ramekin of fruit salad. The combination of watermelon, cantaloupe and pineapple is a favorite … when my nieces were in high school they would help themselves to a bowl whenever they dropped by and it makes me think of them. I miss those girls.

I cheat and buy pre-cut, cubed fruit at the grocery store, and dice it into smaller sections. Yum.

Fruit salad.

While we’re in the kitchen, this Peanut Chicken Wrap recipe is really good. I made it for lunch a couple of weeks ago and used lavash bread instead of flour tortillas.

Flower Magazine debuted their flower of the year, the Levante Rosa Anemone. My magazine subscriptions have dwindled but Flower is one I keep current. Everything about it makes me happy. Anyway, I’m going to check our local nursery to see if I can get my hands on these beauties.

Last but not least, happy anniversary to Kyle and Melody! It’s been three years since their wedding in the Santa Cruz mountains. Of course, I shared everything here.

Odds & Socks ~

These lightweight utility pants found their way into my email box. You have to give the inter-webs credit, they know what I like. Along the same lines, this super relaxed cargo trouser is pretty good too.

What we’ve been watching …

  • Paradise on Hulu is incredibly intense and so good.
  • Running Point on Netflix, starring Kate Hudson as president of family owned LA Waves, a fictional basketball team (based on real life Jeanie Buss, president of the LA Lakers). It’s light, fun and totally enjoyable … a second season is in the works.
  • We started season three of The White Lotus but it’s dribbling out one episode at a time on Sunday’s. I wish we’d waited until all episodes were available. Like the previous two seasons, season three starts out slow and is building toward something big … but we haven’t gotten there yet. There’s a lot of enjoy about it but so far I’m not loving it as much as the first two seasons. The acting is top notch, but I’m waiting for something big to happen and lure me in. By next week I may have an entirely different opinion. Jennifer Coolidge is greatly missed.
  • Tonight we’re starting Douglas is Cancelled which is finally available in the U.S. on Britbox. It’s a four-episode drama staring Hugh Bonneville as a news anchor who gets himself into trouble telling an off-color joke at work.

Current Favorites ~

Whew, that was a long slog. Thanks for sticking with me. I may pop back in again before my sabbatical ends … when my weekend meandering folder fills. In the meantime you can be sure I’m gliding like a duck across the pond while paddling furiously below the surface getting Snowberry ready for sale and the little house ready to break ground.

Until then, let’s see what’s inspiring Kim and Elizabeth.

  • Happy Saturday Juliet! My favorite surprise to wake up to your blog this morning!! I missed it! Thanks for all the tips and beauty and inspiration!! Always SO GOOD!

    LOVE YOU!!
    XO Kym

  • I was happy to see a new post this morning, not expecting one! Really needed a diversion from a week of difficult news. Home and garden (and your blog) always deliver!

    • Thanks, Valletta … we do need lot so distractions these days to get us through the rough spots while remaining sane.xoxo

  • Good to see you Juliet! Enjoyed this post and look forward to future pop-ups. Wish I had one of those blueberry muffins with my tea this morning. Started watching Douglas is Cancelled last night, and we’re really enjoying it.

    • Karen, what did you think of Douglas is Cancelled? Jim thought it was ridiculous and I found it harmlessly entertaining but not my favorite. I polished off the blueberry muffins this morning. See you soon! xo

  • Love your column!

    Highly recommend the Kirkland Champagne!

Thanks for the streaming recommendations and the Julia Reed suggestions as well.

Such a bright spot in my day.

    • Hi Emily! Happy to hear more good things about Kirkland Champagne. Love Costco’s wine section and may be worth renewing my membership just for that. Another reader suggested listening to Julia Reeds book by audio … read by her … which is a great idea. Thanks for your kind words. xo

  • Loved your post. I have your list of things to watch. And may take a trip to Sephora to checkout the makeup suggestions. Good luck on your home sale. It’s always a challenge and such hard work. Where will you live while the new house is being renovated?

    • Hi Cristi! Hope you enjoy my current watch list … we’re getting caught up on many good shows and need to stack the queue again. I think the Saie brand is sold at Ulta, but not Sephora. Have fun exploring! xo

    • We’re found an Airbnb to stay while our house is on the market. And we’ll be looking for a rental to ride out the construction process. If you know of anything, I’d love to hear. xo

  • You have been busy. I’m glad you found time to post. The snow is slowly melting, and we’re above 40 durning the day. I’ll need to go through my yearbook,um the boy next door. I started watching Grosse Pointe garden society. Interesting having a high society garden club as the backdrop. Happy spring!

    • Nina! I’ve seen adds for Grosse Pointe Garden Society and I need to queue it up. Looks like you’re quite the detective too! Hopefully that snow melts soon. Weather under 40 degrees must take some getting used to for a life long Californian. Next time you’re visiting home, I’d lot to meet up with you. xo

  • I’m also watching White Lotus, scenery great, but I disagree with you about acting, given the caliber of the actors I’m shocked at how deplorable the acting is, very stilted and frankly cringeworthy to watch, very disappointing

    • Hi Laura, love hearing your perspective on The White Lotus. After watching last nights episode, I’m a little frustrated. Nothing seems to happen. I guess that leave four more episodes for it to come together with some degree of excitement … we’re waiting (somewhat) patiently. xo

  • So glad you popped back! I was feeling sad when you said you were taking a sabbatical. I’ve read thru once, but will be going back several times to relish everything!

    • Donna, what a lovely thing to say. Thank you. I’ve missed you too and hope to be back to regular Saturday’s very soon. xoxo

  • Hey Juliet, Stanford Shopping Center was my hometown shopping center — I walked there in my teens before getting my license! Their florals are always uplifting, aren’t they?

Veronica Beard is a beautiful line and the green silk maxi is gorgeous — I noticed the floral pattern suits the female figure! Hope we see it on you here in the future…

My husband retires, too, this May: just gave his notice yesterday. Wow… I must confront a new house build, yet I gave it my all only 6 years ago building our current home. I know you must be clear that the Little House project is what you both want — I haven’t quite mustered that clarity for myself yet.

Thanks for the Costco champagne rec — definitely worth trying. I love their rose Prosecco — you might give it a try. And for an occasion or holiday meal, Mumm has a wonderful rose brut sparkling (that was one of my favorite winery stops on our last Napa visit).

Your muffins look wonderful with their crowns! I, too, sub whole wheat for half all purpose flour — great to get a bit more nutrition in there!

Best Wishes for your sale/move prep!

    • Joan! Congrats to your hubby on retirement. Jim has a few week left and then he’ll be done. It’s going to be an interesting transition perhaps made a little gentler by all the distractions we have going on. He can kind of ease in. I know what you mean about being on the same page with these big decisions. Even then they’re quite stressful. I love a good sparking rose … thanks for the recommendations! xo

  • Hi Juliet,
I wondered where you were. Taking a break is always a good idea!
So much good stuff shared here today, wish I lived closer to be able to get to the S&L warehouse sale this weekend. Love their pretty merch.
It’s been so wet and dreary here, I’m looking forward or wearing a dress again – sometime! For now it’s many layers, thick socks, and boots.
That muffin recipe sounds delish. Changing it to GF will probable ruin it. I haven’t found many paces that make a good GF muffin. But I might experiment and see how it goes.
    Enjoy your weekend,
    Xo Heidi

    • Hi Heidi, as I look out the window as the rain comes down I’m bundled up in sweats, a huge sweater and of course socks and slippers. Spring and summer weather – and dresses … will come soon! xo

  • Hi Juliet, so nice to meet another Julia Reed fan. I so miss her. I love reading her books and even more fun if you listen to the audio books- especially south towards home and mama.
    Thanks for the champagne suggestions!
Good luck with the remodel project.

    • Stephanie! That’s a great suggestion (why didn’t I think of it?)! What could be better than listening to Julia reading her book. I need to download them NOW! xo

  • Juliet what a fun post. I’m so glad you ordered that dress with the sweater. So you and versatile…The jacket Plum has on looks like one I had from Rails. I didn’t know Ba&sh had one. Very cute! I am following her Substack now. Thank you. I loved her last book!
The muffins look amazing. I have to try those… DIdn’t know about the champagne, but I defer to you guys. Sadly I am the only one in the house who like champagne. I wonder how these tariff’s will affect the champagne imports? The French ones are the best IMHO..

Love the green dress! Super cute look. So happy for Kyle and Melody. Wow three years went by fast didn’t they?
I have ad that Saie tinted foundation before! Very nice.
I love my Beaufort trays too. I wouldn’t sell them- you can always use them. I am sad about the Vacaville store closing! I was lucky to snag a bunch of great things there..
Hope you have a great weekend! So glad you joined us! xo

P.S. Love the Julia Reed book you gave me!! I need to read more of her..

    • Kim! I think the tariff’s will very much affect the price of French champagne. Quel horreur! Time to go to Costco or wherever and stock up because we’re going to need a good supply of bubbly to get us through the unfortunate period of time. So bummed about Vacaville closing, I’m sure you stopped often on your way to and from Tahoe. Have a great week! xo

  • Enjoyed your blog today….such a pleasant surprise! SO many fun things to distract us with all that’s happening. Best wishes with the sale of your home and the new build. It’s exciting and stressful, but worth it in the end when completed and you’re enjoying your new comfy space together.

    • Hi Cheryl! We certainly can use all the distraction we can get, right?! Thanks for the encouragement. xo

  • Loved your post today, Juliette. So nice to see you ‘pop’ into my Inbox again. Talking about sunscreen, living in NZ our sun is ferocious (!). Our Consumer Watchdog did a survey on sunscreens and found many did not live up to their claims. One they did recommend is Avène Sunscreen Tinted SPF 50+ (a lightweight face sunscreen). I swear by it. You may like to check it out as I believe the higher the SPF factor, the better.

    • Hi Sue, you make a good point, I see that so often, that we can’t get too cozy with the SPF on the bottle. And we need to apply adequately and reapply. I’m a bad reapplyer! Anyway, I appreciate you recommendation and will look it up right now. xo

  • Costco also has great prices on Rose wines, including Whispering Angel, Gerard Roses and their own Kirkland label Rose is quite good also.

    • Hi Adele, I know Costco is a great place to buy wine. I renewed my subscription two years ago for the first time in 10 years, but only used it once so I let it lapse again. We’re just not a Costco household anymore (don’t need to buy in bulk) but it may be worth the membership fee for the wine. Can you believe I’ve never tried Whispering Angel?! Must remedy that soon! xo

  • What a wonderful surprise to see this post pop up. Wonderful content, always a joy to read and re-read. Hope all is going well with the basal cell carcinoma follow up. Been down that path myself, and praying for good outcomes for you too. Blessings as you await the arrival of Melody and Kyle’s baby boy. Take good care of yourself, Jim, and the fur babies. Will look forward to seeing another post when you have a minute in all that is happening in this chapter of your life.

    • Hi Deanna, it was so fun to pop in this week and to hear from you and so many others. I miss you! All’s good with my basal cell follow-ups, but there are a couple of cosmetic things that may require revision. All good. We’re excited to be grandparents … and you can be sure more will be coming on that front. Wishing you the best week, and see you soon! xo

  • It’s so nice to have you back this weekend! We’ve missed you.
We have the same winter weather, one day it is shorts and a t-shirt and then it is back to rainy cold days with a coat. I actually don’t mind the rain, it keeps the pollen down.
Helebores are so beautiful, we have them in our front beds and they look fabulous until about July.
Sorry to hear about your S&L outlet closing, I wonder why?
Also, not to be nosy, but why are you having an “everything must go Snowberry sale.” You could see if the people that buy the house want to buy it furnished or buy a majority of the stuff.
Both of the dresses are fabulous, it is a shame that you have no wedding or party to wear the green one.
Your muffins looks delicious! I concur, it is so annoying when the recipe says it will make a certain amount and you are left with 2-3 less. I find that all the time when I bake.
Julie Reed is one of my favorites too. I do not have all of her books but have now made a note of the ones that I am missing.
    Have a wonderful week Juliet.
    xo

    • Hi Elizabeth, you’re right, whoever buys our house may well wish to purchase things and my fingers are crossed that’s the case. I know I’ll end up with some sort of sale, maybe just decor items if the furniture is purchased. Won’t know or be able to plan ahead much until all these details fall into place. Jim keeps telling me to take one step at a time so I’m trying to focus on getting the house sold and finding a temporary place to live. So much fun. Not. Have a great week. xo

  • Hello Juliet,
Gorgeous dresses!! So nice to hear your voice again and read your blog hope the potential move is shaping up nicely.I am on a strict diet and would love to have muffins in the morning but sadly no! Happy week:)

    • Oh Francesca, I’m sorry about the – hopefully brief – muffin-ess existence! So happy to hear from you and I’ll be back soon. xo

  • Hey Girl! Nice to hear from you! I thought of you and your bubbly club when we were in Sonoma last month and I fell in love with the shop. Chip sat in the tasting room next door while I browsed…Got their wonderful candle and forced myself not to buy baby booties.
Also – LOVE One Man’s Folly – one of my favorite coffee table books..❤️
I bet you are sad to see the S&L outlet go. We have never had an outlet or a store nearby, I would be sad to lose one…
    Good luck with the house!

    • Gray! You made a trip to the wine country! I’ll bet you had a great time and I’m so glad you enjoyed Chateau Sonoma. It’s full of amazing treasures. Well, the entire plaza is as Chip found out! xo

  • Hi Juliet! How wonderful to see you pop up here! I am sure you are busy these days. Lucky you to have warm temps and flowers blooming. Things stay brown and chilly in Maine for so long. It is my least favorite time of year. Love the Quince cropped sweats you shared in your last section. Take care!

    • Molly! Speaking of the Quince sweats mine arrived and there is nothing softer. I may need to pants in all colors and will never take them off. We’re in a strange time of year too, I see plants budding but at the same time it’s cold and rainy. Feels like a long stretch of gloom. Hope you have a great week! xo

  • Hi Juliet,
YOU and your wonderful blog have been missed. Gee, it was a surprise that you took the time to pop in.
How exciting you are going to be grandparents in August.
The Levante Rosa Anemone flower is pretty, love flowers. They always brighten my spirit. We hope to have roses blooming in two weeks or so. The bushes look super healthy.
I’m with you. I love healthy muffins, blueberry is always good. When I was a working girl I would bake lots. Freeze them and each day one would come to work with me. In those days I made the jumbo size ones.
Take care during this stressful time. You have lots on your plate.
How are you healing from your skin surgeries? You have been through so much.
Be safe, and take TLC of yourself.

    • Hi Katherine, thanks, I’ve missed the weekend post and couldn’t help myself! How exciting your roses are nearly ready to bloom. I love this time of year watching the garden come to life. My two surgery areas are doing fine, there are a couple of issues that may require revision, but it’s all cosmetic … so all good.I just polished off two blueberry muffins.Yum. xo

  • I use Saie too! And I just bought a king sized comforter at the big Serena and Lily outlet in Daytona Beach. Score. 🙂

  • Just want to tell you how much I enjoy your posts! Nothing is too mundane for me, it’s all life! Looking forward to your new home.
I love the California weather, I am here in freezing Vermont and we’re getting an ice storm tomorrow… uhggg…spring will eventually come to us!
