Out & About with Friends, Pantry Essentials for Flu Season & 3 Favorite Cookbooks

Today on weekend meanderings, a couple of Bay Area outings with friends, my pantry essentials to survive flu season, plus three favorite cookbooks that make great gifts.

Happy Saturday, friends!

It’s time for the weekend post with Kim and Elizabeth. Our weekly roundup of inspirations and goings on.

I missed last weekend … sorry. I was down and out with the flu for nearly two weeks. TWO weeks. Jeez. On Thursday I finally began feeling ‘normal’ again … if normal is ever a category in which I find myself.

All and all it’s been a slow start to the year. I laid low most of January and early February recovering from basal cell carcinoma surgeries which turned out to be a bigger deal to bounce back from than anticipated. I finally got back to full-speed, and bam … the flu. And yesterday I spent three hours in the dentist chair beginning what will be a three week process to deal with an issue that’s been causing distress for over a year.

So far 2025 has not been my favorite year ever. But let’s not dwell on the negative. Anyone else fall under the spell of the NHL Four Nations tournament?! The final game didn’t turn out as hoped, but Team USA did us proud and kudos to Team Canada.

White Denim in the Winter

It feels like forever ago, but last week – or the week before – I joined up with friends to share ideas for rocking white denim in the winter.

Of all the white denim options I shared, this pair are far and away the most popular.

Out & About To Down & Out

If I’d been healthy last week I would have shared a couple of out-of-the-house adventures. BFF Jane’s birthday lunch in the City and a Lunar New Year luncheon – plus shopping – with Kim. Both fun outings feel like they happened another lifetime ago, I’ll recap.

I joined Jane and her daughter Tess for birthday lunch at the new Little Original Joe’s in the Marina. Original Joe’s in North Beach is a San Francisco institution with several offshoots around the Bay Area and one coming soon to Walnut Creek (near me!!!). The Walnut Creek location has been in a ‘coming soon’ mode for what feels like forever but it does appear the grand opening is imminent. In the meantime, I was really excited to try out the Marina location and see what we have to look forward to.

When we walked in and put our name in for a table (they don’t take reservations) we saw towers of truffle fries flying around the restaurant and knew there’d be one destined for our table.

Truffles fries at Little Original Joes.

The restaurant has an welcoming, old-school feel with black leather booths and red leather chairs. I love the black and white checkerboard floor and open kitchen.

Once the truffle fries were placed in front of us I completely forgot about my phone (camera), but trust me when I say everything looked and tasted amazing. It was Jane’s birthday so dessert was de rigueur … as was a celebratory firecracker. So fun!

After lunch we stopped by Tess’ new Marina apartment. Since graduating college Tess has lived in the City with roommates, and recently moved into her own place. Her apartment is all charm … with the most beautiful moldings, built-ins, and big bay windows (with windows seats) along both exterior walls. Congrats, Tess!

I’d barely recovered from the truffle fry tower when it was time to get gussied up again and head to Bloomingdale’s to meet Kim. She was invited to Bloomies Lantern Festival Luncheon – in honor of Lunar New Year – and to celebrate their top clients. I was honored to be her plus one.

The luncheon was held at AnQi Shaken & Stirred, a restaurant just inside Bloomingdale’s entrance. We were greeted by Mark Thomas, Bloomingdale’s General Manager, and settled in with some other lovely ladies – and gentlemen – for a delicious lunch.

Kim and I both had Orange Chicken which was served with a platter of garlic noodles – yum. Dessert was a fried banana a la mode. Delish!

After lunch Mark sent us out to shop … and we were happy to oblige. Kim took me up to her favorite department … BA$SH. And introduced me to Leslie, the BA$SH manager who expertly guided me around the brand’s beautiful pieces (how did I get no pictures?!). I wasted no time filling a dressing room and trying on all their lovely cropped jackets and sweaters. With Kim and Leslie’s encouragement I brought home a beautiful jacket in camel … as well as a navy dress from Frame.

Seasonal Cold & Flu Essentials to Have on Hand

Even though Jim and I don’t get sick very often, there are a few things I keep stocked in the cupboard just in case. Because once something hits, going to the store can feel like an impossible task.

It goes without saying that Canada Dry Ginger Ale (in mini cans) and saltines are pantry staples. Soft Kleenex and Aquafor keep runny noses from turning red and irritated. Cough drops are gross, but Ricola Lemon Mint lozenges are tolerable. Comfy clothes – this Barefoot Dreams blanket wrap is the best – and good books round out my essentials to survive the latest plague.

Speaking of books, while I was convelescing I read a very good novel, How to End a Love Story, and reread Emma. When all else fails I reread my favorite Jane Austen novels because they always bring enjoyment and comfort.

I’m curious, what are your pantry essentials when you or a family member is under the weather?

Currently Obsessed with These Cookbooks

I’ve been making a point to stop into our local book store and our new-ish Barnes & Noble more frequently. Recently I picked up a few cookbooks that were marvelous company while I was sick. They’re also great books for gifting.

Three cookbooks on kitchen counter.

There’s Always Room at the Table

Do you follow Kaleb Wyse? He’s one of my Instagram favorites and I’ve been excitedly awaiting his first cookbook, There’s Always Room at the Table. His hearty, midwestern recipes are right up my alley … the kind of food my grandmother made and my favorite to make and eat. Comfort food.

In addition to a deep appreciation for his food style, I’m an admirer of his home style too. He lives in his grandparents 1800’s farmhouse recently updated and renovated for a modern lifestyle. Oh and his gardening adventurers on the farm … I wish I had his energy.

The Model Bakery Cookbook

The famed Napa Valley bakery recently opened a location nearby and I couldn’t wait to give it a try. It’s now a favorite spot to stop in for breakfast, lunch or just to pick up some yummy pastries and famous English muffins. Of course I had to buy their popular 2013 cookbook. And I bought one for Jane too, for her birthday. I visited the bakery for the first time with her after talking about its opening for what felt like forever.

Lemon

The Gourmand’s Lemon. I know nothing about this book other than I love lemons and it caught my eye at Barnes & Noble. Turns out it’s a beautiful collection of photos, stories, and recipes centered around … lemons. It’s total eye candy and I can’t stop flipping through it.

Don’t tell, but I bought a copy for Kim which I intended to give her at our Bloomingdale’s meetup. Because I failed to follow her meticulously outlined directions, we ended up parking in different parking garages and I wasn’t able to pass it along. It’s been sitting on my kitchen counter ever since and I finally made it to the post office to mail it to her … it should arrive in her mailbox this week. But, again, shhhh ….

I know I’m meant to be decluttering in preparation for our move, but books and cookbooks are rarely in my discard pile. Our new house may be small in size but it will be generous in bookshelves.

And that’s what I have for you today. Except … for a little news. I’m pressing pause on the blog for a couple of months while I focus on prepping Snowberry for sale, finding a temporary home, and shepherding plans for the new house through the approval process. I may pop in from time to time with an update and I’ll definitely share news of our moving sale.

I’m really going to miss meeting up with Elizabeth and Kim – and YOU – on Saturday mornings. But I’ll be back before you know it.

Let’s see what’s inspiring Elizabeth and Kim today.

  • Juliet,
Glad you’re on the mend after a tough couple of months. Take all the time you need to prep for your home sale and move. I am in the thick of it with selling my dad’s home to move him in with me and it is an exhausting full time job. Best to you and Jim! Looking forward to beautiful reveals down the road.

  • I know what you mean about 2025 so far. Mine last week is almost funny if I think about it. My husband’s favorite regulator clock has been my job since I lost him unexpectedly last year, well, that stopped. Then 2 days later we had a weather related power outage and power that blew my modem, then a day later the screen on my TV went, told it was due to the power surge. Ordered new one. All this happened while I was sick in bed for several days, only getting up to snowblow in frigid temps! My Dad always said take it like it comes. On a positive note I have a number of full leg jeans, and cropped sweaters and jackets in my wardrobe to take to Paris when I go with my daughter and two young granddaughters on a girls’ trip!

  • I’m going to miss your delightful posts but can’t wait to hear all about your plans and adventures when you get back!!

  • Juliet,
I’m so sorry it’s been a rough couple of months for you! Original Joe’s was Howard’s favorite restaurant…we would walk down and take the bus back up the hill 🙂
I will miss your posts so hurry up and get everything accomplished that you need to do.

  • Juliet, I know how difficult these past 2 months have been and I am happy that you are on the mend. I can also relate to selling/buying/renting while trying to build/remodel your dream house. So take all of the time that you need, we will all be thinking about you, praying all goes well and cheering you on from the sidelines! Exciting things are coming your way and we are so excited for you.
I love all of your new books, cookbooks are my favorite! I have the Wyse book on order, he is such a delightful and uplifting guy and everything he does or makes is beautiful and “easy.”
The birthday celebration with truffle fries sounds and looks delicious.
As for your outing with Kim, how wonderful to see my two stylish friends out and about. You both look beautiful and the outing sounds amazing. I love your new dress! And jacket.
Looking forward to having you back, you will be missed!
    xo

  • I hope you’re on the mend. You’ve been through a lot! Your blog will be missed, but take your time to focus on all that you have coming your way. All those new cookbooks look great, and love your new camel jacket and the dress. Best of luck accomplishing all the projects on your plate. Be well, be happy, sweet lady!

  • Hello Juliet, glad to hear that you got over the lurgy. All the best for the coming months as you get ready to move – look forward to hearing all about it in due course.

  • Hi Juliet, I’m glad to read you are on the mend as it has been a rough couple of months for you, as well as many of us. Oh my goodness, I’m surprised to learn you are already prepping Snowberry for new owners! You will need lots of energy for all the plans ahead. Enjoy the cookbooks. Are you familiar with Nigel Slater, the British chef and author? There is a good film on Amazon Prime called “Toast”. It’s his memoir about his childhood. You will be missed here, but I look forward to your newsy updates! xx Karen

  • Hi Juliet,
Glad you are on the mend and moving forward purposefully to good things! My husband is a prof here in the upper MW — the entire campus seems to be sick right now. We were in Boston right before NY’s and both of us were dreadfully sick the first two weeks of January…

The navy Frame dress is STUNNING on you!

I bought the very cute BASH sweater jacket that Km is wearing + a little leather swing jacket at the Boston store, happy to be able to try them on in person. It is a great brand!

We have moved/rented/reno’ed / built/moved in once every 10 years with every new academic job for my husband — I am a basket case with packing up/moving! My only defense is that it is mentally hard to move 2000 – 3000 miles each time.

You clearly have experience in prepping for a move, renting and overseeing a remodel/build — so wishing you blue skies and smooth sailing!

  • I’m sorry it’s been a challenging start to the year. We all have these times, so I hope the break gives you the space you need to reset.
I’m not suggesting you follow my path in any way but thought it may be of interest as to how my break from blogging unfolded …
You may not remember, but I stopped the blog with Cindy and Kim in Jan23 to get our house ready for sale while looking for a new one down the coast (which we found and have now fully renovate). I decluttered along the way, sold and donated a ton of “stuff” – household (books included ) and so many clothes! During the process I even deactivated Sarah London Style. You could say, I took the time to reset on how I saw my future self. And now, 2 years later, my days are full of yoga, dog walks, gardening, cooking and framily catch ups. Which is exactly what I envisioned. Not jut a reset but a reinvention for this stage of our lives
I still love checking in from time to time with my favourite bloggers (you, Kim and Cindy) so I am very interested to see how the next few months unfolds for you, whatever it brings, may it be on your wishlist.
    Sarah xx

  • Hi Juliet,
So sorry to hear it’s been such a rough beginning to 2025 for you health wise.
And I will sure miss you on Saturdays not reading your lovely blog.
Sending all good wishes for a quick and happy sale and here’s to a glorious new adventure in your new home.
All the best to you and Jim xo

  • Juliet,
You’ll be missed but I understand (ALL too well) how preparing a home for sale can be all consuming. Not to mention finding a temporary home as well while you also focus on your new home. Very smart of you to totally focus on all of that for now!

I can’t wait to see your new home. I know it will be gorgeous with your very gifted touch.

I’m checking out your “Lemon” book suggestion via your link. We grow patio lemons & limes. I drink lemon water daily & love basically anything lemon (especially desserts, lol) as I know you do.

    So glad you’re feeling better!
Here’s to a much better 2025 ahead for you.
    Big hugs,
    Scarlett

  • Hi Juliet,
The new Little Original Joe’s in the Marina looks fabulous. So different from the one I used to eat at. I lived in the Marina as a young woman. Jane’s birthday party looked perfect, truffle fries, yum and fun firecracker so cool.
Wow, you have been through the wringer the past two months. Glad to hear you are on the mend. Now, me and my honey are very sick.
You and Kim are so adorable together. The Navy dress from Frame looks perfect on you.
Good luck with your endless “to do” list.
I admire that you have the energy and where with all to do everything that is facing you.
Take your sweet time in returning. Take care, you remain in my thoughts.

  • Juliet, SO glad you are on the other side of that flu. It was not fun and I can’t believe we both got it. I hear you with the teeth thing. I’m dealing with it now with invisalign. Hopefully, will be all worth it.

I’m happy we at least got some fun shopping and lunching in before. Love the dress and the jacket. I know you’ll wear both so much.
I agree with all the flu stuff. Thank goodness for our old school comfort. Going to start Persuasion soon, my first Jane book!!

I have to check out the new OJs. Growing up my dad’s company Valley Title where he worked for 45 years, was across from the old one in San Jose. He took us there so many times and it was his other office, aka Madman times. I like that your OJs looks much like the old San Jose one. Happy Birthday to lovely Jane and her daughter is darling too.
Going to miss you on the weekends, but you gotta do what you gotta do. We will be here.
    xoxo

  • So sad you’ll be away…..I really enjoy my little Saturday morning reading . I’ll be anxiously awaiting your return. Enjoy your break!
