White Denim for Winter – Shopping My Closet to Create Cute Outfits & You Can Too

Today I’m joining my friends to talk about our favorite white denim. I’m styling my favorite white denim for winter with a 11-piece styling capsule created by shopping my closet. I put together a ton of cute outfits and you can too!

When Kim and Cindy ask me – along with Mary Ann and Annie – to join their Signature Style series this month, I was thrilled. Of course. The topic – favorite white denim – is one I can get behind. Or get my behind into.

I love wearing white denim year round … although my mother, who was firmly in the not-after-Labor-Day camp, would raise an eyebrow.

Can we wear white denim after Labor Day. Of course we can. That said, the cooler season calls for a heavier weight, denser denim and I veer toward warmer whites and ecrus. Aside from that, anything goes. Lucky for me I have two pair of white denim in my closet that meet the criteria. I bet you do too.

My Favorite White Denim

Today I’m styling two pair of warm white denim from my closet. Mother the Mid-Rise Maven Ankle Fray in Act Natural and Rails Getty Wide-Leg in Vintage Ecru.

Shopping My Closet to Create Outfits

I challenged myself to shop my closet for this post … and not buy anything new. Guess what? I did it.

When I pulled my trusty rolling rack into my closet and started to grab pieces that fit the bill, I was surprised by how quickly the rack filled up. My unexpected dilemma became editing. I edited ruthlessly until I had an 11-piece styling capsule for my winter white denim. The 11-pieces do not include my two pair of white denim, shoes or accessories.

What made the cut? Chunky sweaters, cashmere, flannel, wool, suede and leather jackets, casual shoes and suede ankle boots. I really love the look of suede with white denim … it just feels winter and adds warmth to the white.

Of course, layers … in colder months – even in California – layers are essential. I started off my more casual outfits with this long sleeve tee as a base layer. It’s a versaile piece I wear constantly.

What I learned during the process is that I have a very neutral wardrobe. And that makes me happy because I’ve been weeding out my closet for several years now with that goal in mind. The contents of my 11-piece styling capsule fell into two color categories … beige to brown, and black.

  1. Long sleeve tee in marble
  2. Loose weave, lightweight sweater in oatmeal
  3. Flannel oversize button up in brown plaid
  4. Black cashmere tee
  5. Black ribbed knit turtleneck, (similar)
  6. Cashmere fisherman turtleneck sweater in oatmeal
  7. Boucle cardigan in oatmeal
  8. Houndstooth blazer (similar – plaid works too!)
  9. Suede jacket camel
  10. Black leather jacket
  11. Camel wool peacoat

More White Denim Options

These are some of the warm white denim options I saved while researching this post. All of them are good. I tried to pare back a bit, but it was hard.

How do you feel about barrel leg jeans? My initial reaction was ‘not for me.’ Then I tried on Madewell’s dart-leg barrel jean and loved them. They’re flattering and comfortable and I’ve been wearing them nearly everyday. Good news, this style comes in vintage canvas (ecru) too and I was tempted to buy them but stuck with my ‘no buy’ pledge for this post. Now that it’s done they may move from my cart to my closet. That said, they have some stiff competition from Frame. I tried on their barrel jean in au natural and it’s also flattering and comfortable … a little pricier. It’s a tough decision but the good news is warm white jeans can be worn year-round so …

Inspiration Pieces to Pair with White Denim

The Miranda sweater in oatmeal from Rails is a beauty.

This nipped waist, bell sleeved cardigan in taupe reminds me of a favorite piece from the 80’s or 90’s (the decades are starting to run together) and would look amazing with white denim.

You know I love the look of suede with white denim. Truth is I love suede with everything. Last fall I added this Sezane suede jacket to my closet (as seen above) and I looked at many options before settling on it. Quince has a very popular suede jacket – they call it an overskirt – that’s similar. It sold out but was just restocked. This cropped suede jacket from BA&SH is a treasure. I know I should stop, but just a couple more. Mango and Mint Velvet each make lovely cropped versions and are slightly more affordable.

Last weekend I met up with Kim at Bloomingdales (more about that on the weekend post) and with her encouragement bought this adorable cropped jacket. It’s perfect for dressing up winter white denim. Stay tuned …

  • Hi Juliet

You look darling in every look. I have to admit I am not a white denim fan any time of the year. I took one for the team on this one. I have big legs and they often make me look like a sausage! You look so great in a neutral palette.

    • Cindy you look great in white denim. But I hear you about the sausage effect. My thighs are far from petite. And it’s my biggest irritation about white too. Thank goodness we’ve moved on from skinny jeans (I hear they’re coming back, but not to my closet!), the straight and flared styles are much more flattering. xo

  • Can I shop your closet, too? Great job.

I was daydreaming how fun it would be if we all were going out to lunch together in our white jeans 🙂

  • Juliet – I love seing everything on your rolling rack…perfect for packing so you can see everything in one place! Every look is gorgeous on you! Especially love that plaid Frank & Eileen shirt with the ecru denim.

    • Peyton, it’s so funny that you say that. I had a gorgeous suede jacket in high school. It came from Casual Corner (remember that mall store?). I kept it for years and years and finally let it go. When I started my search for a suede jacket I had it in mind. How smart you were to hold onto yours! xo

    • Hi Lu! Many of these jeans do come in petite offerings. I know my new favorite Madewell dart leg barrel is offered in petite, tall and regular. I found the regular to be on the shorter side (length) but it’s nice they offer all three options. I have most of my pants hemmed which is a pain but I’m come to accept it. xo

  • Juliet, I love your outfits here. We really like the same looks and how great is the tan suede with white jeans? Really cute. Love the camel coat on you and I need that cardigan. I find Rails things to be so nice too. Great choices. I wonder if I should add that barrell jean to my mix?

    • Kim! I was so anti-barrel … now I feel very silly. You may be pleasantly surprised too. The Madewell barrel offers petite sizing. I bought the regular and the length is a little short … which I like. xo

  • Hi Juliet,
Such lovely looks!! The Sezane Will jacket in Suede has been such a great buy for me and I wear it often.Love that cropped jacket what a great find!

  • Hi Juliet,
You look fabulous in everything. It helps when you know what you’re doing. The garment roll racks are so useful. When we were representing a line of clothing years ago when we had our marketing and sales consultant business I used ours all the time. I hope you will be able to take your rack with you when you move down the line.
    You “nailed it.”

    • Thanks, Katherine. You’re right, the rolling rack is incredibly useful and I never intend to be without it. Mine folds up for easy storage. Makes packing for trips (and blog posts!) much easier. Wish I’d learned this sooner, but better late than never. 🙂 xo

  • Hi, Juliet! I really like how you shopped your closet for these looks. Great job! I have two pairs of white jeans, and I need to get the heavier pair in circulation. I also have a cropped chocolate suede jacket that doesn’t get enough outings. However, warmer yet dry weather is a seldom seen sweet spot here in Portland. Currently I am wearing more layers than this indoors! Stay cozy! 🙂
p.s. – love my Madewell barrell pants!

  • Hi Juliet — You always looks so stylish, but comfortable too. Trying to decide if I can pull off white/off white jeans here in frigid Maine. I love all your looks! I would have to go with navy/black. I can’t do beiges, though they look great on you!

  • Juliet, you look fabulous! I love all of your looks. Your tone on tone wardrobe creates endless outfit possibilities!
Hope that you are feeling better.
    xo

  • Hi Juliet,
Elizabeth, and Kim both mentioned you were under the weather, the flu??? I’m sorry to hear you are not feeling well. It’s no fun being sick. I know you are an active person with lots to do. Sometimes we need to take time out for ourselves and simply do nothing, even when we are not feeling great. Women are so busy taking care of everyone else at times, and not enough just for our selves. Sending you well wishes.
