Valentine’s Day Plans and Ideas + A Snowberry Update

Today on weekend meanderings, Valentine’s Day plans and ideas, a pet provision and grocery grand opening, renegotiating my relationship with my phone, and a Snowberry update.

Happy Saturday, friends!

It’s time for the weekend post with Kim and Elizabeth. Our weekly roundup of inspirations and goings on.

It’s Super Bowl weekend and I’ve got no skin in the game. But I do hope to have some potato skins on my plate.

Last weekend I shared our usual game day menu. I’m trying to watch what I eat and probably won’t make the entire spread this year. It’s time to get to the grocery store before all the chips and wings are sold out.

It was a wet, super windy, stormy week here in Northern California. And in-between it was extremely cold. You can see a bit of frost on our front patio table where I set out my Christmas cactus (that blooms at Thanksgiving) to take in some rain.

Pippa and Maggie hate going out in the rain, and the howling winds scare them – me too. It was a challenging week trying to get them out to the powder room. Anyhoo …

Valentine’s Day + Bridget Jones

Valentine’s Day is six days away. Jim doesn’t know it yet but we’ll be celebrating by watching Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy. I read it will be released in theaters throughout the U.K. on Thursday, and available to stream on Peacock on Valentine’s Day. Jim enjoys the Bridget Jones movies so there’s no arm twisting involved. He’ll probably mix a martini before show time and I’ll indulge in a Raspberry Kir Royale. Can’t wait!

I’m not sure what will be on our dinner menu. My aunt always makes I Love You Fettuccini for my uncle on Valentine’s Day.  I’ll definitely make these easy, no-bake chocolate pots de creme for dessert.

I’ve got a couple other Valentine’s Day ideas on the blog.

If you’re local and looking for a fun Valentine’s Day weekend activity, get your tickets to the 14th annual Wine & Chocolate Stroll in historic downtown Martinez. This year’s stroll is on Saturday, February 15th from 1:00 – 4:00pm. With over 31 participating businesses open for browsing, sipping and nibbling. Cheers to that!

Partners Place Soft (Grand) Opening Today

Last year I shared where Pippa and Maggie stay when we’re away. The Dog Breath Motel is the most wonderful home-away-from-home environment for dogs. Our girls love it (they’re picky). Last year, Tami, proprietress and house mother, realized a dream of creating The Dog Breath Motel merch … t-shirts and ball caps … that we’re wearing proudly.

This year Tami is making another dream come true by opening a pet-centric brick and mortar in downtown Martinez. Partners Place, a holistic pet provisions and grocery (raw, healthy and ethically sourced), at 511 Main Street, Martinez, is debuting their soft (grand) opening today at 10:00am. The shop is a family affair … with members, young and less-young, putting in some serious elbow grease to get their new space – designed by Tami’s talented son – ready for today’s opening. I’ve been following their progress on Instagram and I can’t wait to get over there and check it out for myself. You can watch their mad dash to the finish line here.

We started feeding our dogs fresh food several years ago – in addition to their beloved kibble – and I plan to consult with Tami and explore the fresh food options available at Partners Place. I’d prefer to buy the girls food locally and from a family run business.

How to Break Up with Your Phone

Social media, cell phones, and attention span. These things have been on my mind – a lot – lately and the new book by Chris Hayes, Sirens’ Call: How Attention Became the World’s Most Endangered Resource, is on my reading list. To promote the book Chris has been on a number of podcasts and I’m fascinated and horrified – in a Garfield ‘I resemble that remark’ sort of way – listening to the discussion around this topic.

Along these lines, Catherine Price just published a revised and updated version of her book, How to Break Up with Your Phone. The book includes a a step-by-step guide to ‘the breakup’ and Catherine is hosting a breakup challenge this month offering additional support and tips. I may need to sign up.

What’s Happening with the Little House on 4th?

I’m so glad you asked!

Brief recap … about a year ago Jim and I bought a tiny little one bedroom, one bathroom cottage in an old downtown neighborhood. It’s the neighborhood where we walk our dogs on the trail every weekend and where we’ve been eyeing potential fixer uppers for twenty years. It was a pinch-me moment when we finally got our hands on one.

Little blue cottage.

We bought the house with the intention of expanding, renovating and moving in. The idea of walking out our front door and onto the bike trail each morning probably clouded our judgement. Cooler heads (ahem … Dana Green) tried to caution us that this project would be a long and challenging undertaking. Did we listen? You know the saying, f*** around, and find out. Well, we’re in the find out phase.

In the year since we bought the little cottage we hired an architect (Joseph Gorny) and an interior designer (Ashley White at Eye for Pretty). We’ve had endless discussions – over cocktails – and I’ve created a gazillion Pinterest boards. We’re still in the planning stages, but inching ever closer to turning this tiny cottage into our dream/forever home. Here’s a  sneak peak at our proposed design.

Here’s our kitchen mood board.

Coming soon …

While progress on the new house comes in fits and starts, we’re moving forward with plans to sell Snowberry. Once again we’re working with the Dana Green Team. Dana and I spoke earlier in the week to formulate a plan and create a timeline. Of course I’ll share all that with you as it comes together.

In addition to selling the house, we’re selling most of its contents and will throw open the doors for a Snowberry on Sale event later this year. Everything must go! Well … almost everything. Stay tuned.

  • I love the tiny house as is. Your plans for the new house, while fabulous, seem like it would entail using the whole lot fence to fence. Wouldn’t privacy be an issue? I like my neighbors…at a distance.

  • We downsized 18 months ago into a cute 2000 sq foot home on a small lot and do not miss the big house and yard at all (except for the extra closets!). I only took what I loved, which made the letting go process easier. Once we got here it became obvious which pieces of furniture that we brought were not going to work. So there was another round of letting go. There were a few pieces that I loved and didn’t immediately see a home for that found unexpected, but perfect places to settle. It’s a jigsaw puzzle I’m sure you will beautifully put together. Btw, we used Natural Cream on all of our interior doors to give interest to our white walls and I love it. Hope you will too!

  • The cottage is adorable, and I love your kitchen mood board! How exciting to be able to walk out your door and onto a trail!

  • Wow! Selling all the contents too! I wished I lived nearby to peruse. It is exciting to have a dream home to design and plan for and I look forward to the details. Also, you’ve almost inspired me to bake cookies as I’m not fond of cookie making. We’ll see. Happy Valentine’s Day!

  • Thank you soo much for the book- it is helping me to have a more fulfilling life by deleting what I don’t really need. Also, I loved the wrapping paper; could you please show the link again?? I have to have it!!! Thank you for your generosity!!

  • Gosh, I love the look, and the great location of your future home! Right sizing makes for a great new lifestyle.
My husband and I left the home we raised our family in, about 10 years ago. We bought, and remodeled a patio home with a great location and views. The lots are small, and neighbors get along, and respect each others spaces.
We do have a yard but it’s much smaller, and low care. We have a covered front porch, where we watch people walking and biking, to link up to a trail. We have a dining courtyard with a beautiful water feature, and we have a covered back deck with views over the golf course.
We enjoy our 1,500 sq ft on the main level, and flow into the nicely finished basement in the wintertime, and when our grandchildren come over to play.

  • Oh my goodness, the design for your new home looks absolutely wonderful! I hope all goes well as you progress. I’m sure it will be an adventure, and I can’t wait to follow along!

  • The new shop for pup pals looks FUN! Just one word of caution about raw food for dogs: I used to purchase A top quality dehydrated raw food for our girl, and her internist (we live in a town with a veterinary med school) literally FORBADE me to give it to her. I told her that it was quality-checked for bacteria EVERY batch, and she vehemently told me “never ever”. So despite the fact that punsters LOVE raw, please keep that in mind, no matter what you hear.

Thank you for the heads’ up on Bridget: looks like MORE fun! And I love your plans for your new down-sized home (wish I could get on board with our own plans for a relocation and new home build, but I thought this was our last, and put so much effort into it and it has been only 5.5 years, but the clock is ticking — PPPRESSURE…)

    Happy Valentine’s Day!

    • Great post as always!
My husband and I went for my bday celebration to Chris Hayes’ book talk in Palo Alto this week and it was wonderful being surrounded by energetic, intelligent, empathetic people amidst the dystopian political news.
Chris had great insights about our current situation, love him!
The book is great, esp love the audiobook, Chris narrates it himself.

  • Hi Juliet! The new Bridget Jones movie is my plan for Valentine’s Day too. I still love the first movie and remember laughing uproariously the first time I saw it. It is not often that a movie can make you laugh like that. (My Big Fat Greek Wedding was another one.) The plans for your sweet cottage look wonderful. Maybe I need to plan a trip to Cali for your sale…. Have a wonderful week!

  • Love your kitchen mood board. So exciting to downsize to a great home in a great location. Can’t wait to see how it all comes together. Be calm during the process and take good care of yourself with all you have going on.

  • Hi Juliet,
The Little House on 4th is adorable and the Mood Board looks outstanding. I can only imagine what you and Jim have been through. Dealing with the city for building approval and just the whole project. You are so good handling challenges. Knowing you this sweet forever home will turn out perfectly. As we advance in age smaller is so much easier to handle. Owning a home is a constant on going project.
When we down sized to one home it all felt so freeing one less thing to look after. We miss the cooler weather in the summer but life is a trade off. We never looked back.

  • Why bother downsizing when you’re going to expand the cottage into a typical house? Start looking at English Home magazine and see how cottage is supposed to look.

  • Hi Juliet,
Woohoo! A cottage update! What a long process for you, but very exciting nonetheless. I’m all about the Snowberry on Sale event later – you HAVE to keep me posted on that (please!). I love the kitchen of cream cabinets with the walnut island. I see two stories. I’m guessing you’re planning for the future with a master suite on the first floor. This is going to be so much fun to watch unfold!
Your cactus is actually a Thanksgiving cactus. You can tell this from the upright growth habit and the serrated leaves. It’s also known as a crab cactus because the leaves are like a crab claw. Christmas cactus have a droopier habit with smooth, more rounded leaves. Did you know there is also an Easter cactus?

  • Hi Juliet

Oh my goodness you are going to part with all of your wonderful furnishings? Well your new digs will be wonderful. I guess you have done it before and you love it, right? Can’t wait to watch Bridget Jones. FYI I am not getting your newsletter anymore.

  • Happy Weekend Juliet!
I am so excited for the cottage update! The kitchen looks FABULOUS as I know the rest of the house will in good time. How wonderful to walk out your door to the trails and places that you love, especially as Jim will soon be retiring.
    Your Valentine’s Day sounds perfect!
I’ve really been making an effort to “break up” with my phone, and Instagram and doomscrolling. I have lost interest because I never see anything but sponsored posts.
Which is why I LOVE blogs!
Your dog camp and its new store sound wonderful. AS for food, we have been raw feeders for over 15 years and our dogs love it and are incredibly healthy. We also give them raw marrow bones, we remove the marrow, to help keep their teeth clean and so far so good.
Have a wonderful weekend Juliet, xo

  • Oh my goodness, I can’t imagine selling your house. It’s so beautiful.!! I know you’ll make your new home so beautiful as well! I think it’s hard to think about selling all your belongings as well but I guess with a new house you often need new things ! I need to read how to break up with your phone!!

  • Juliet … are you sure you want to expand your new cottage up? We are heading into our next decade and steps are, and will become problematic … one level living is not only desirable but prudent . It’s a beautiful home , I wonder if you’ve considered other elevations ? Speaking from experience here ! Love your blog … Joely

  • I simply cannot wait to see your new house plans come into fruition. Everything looks like my dream home far!
Also, I hope your healing continues. I had MOHS in the same place you did several years ago so I wish you all the best.

  • Juliet,
I cannot possibly be the only blog reader who is begging – begging -you to change your font! It is impossible for these old eyes to read. It might work to simply BF, but I doubt it. Sans serif is very hard on the aging eye.
I love your blog, and I don’t want to miss a thing!
Thank you for your consideration in this matter.

  • Oh my goodness!! I had no idea you were actually going to sell Snowberry and move!! How exciting!!! I can’t wait to watch you make this little cottage your dream home! More details and pictures please!!

  • What a wonderful project! A tiny house on your dream street in your dream town sounds like a slice of heaven. I look forward to reading all about the progress.

  • Juliet, Sorry I am so late to the blog. Love you Valentine ideas. I will maybe make that pasta and chocolate mousse! Fun to see your new home plans.. I love all you choose. SO pretty. It will be wonderful to just walk out and to your trail. I can’t wait to follow along…
I have Bridget Jones on my list too. xo
