Today on Weekend Meanderings, what I did on my summer vacation, fall finds from Anthropology and a favorite television show is back!

Hello Friends … happy Saturday! How was your summer?

What I Did on My Summer Vacation

  • Wrote about our Puglian adventures and summer entertaining menu … more below
  • Made progress, and BIG decisions, for our Little House on 4th … stay tuned
  • Enjoyed tons of dahlias from our garden

Pitcher of dahlias on island with mug of cocoa.

  • Watched (was riveted to) the Paris Olympics (currently watching Paralympics … amazed and inspired by these athletes)
  • Visited Sonoma and toured the historic Buena Vista Winery

  • Hosted some dinner parties
  • Read a few good books
  • Caught up with baby Dylan who just celebrated her 1st birthday and has a baby brother coming soon

Woman sitting on floor with holding baby girl.

  • Cleaned out my closet … again
  • Sprained both wrists … which put a serious damper on my summer projects
  • Hung out with niece Shelby

  • Shelby, a recently minted esthetician, works at Massage Envy in the Willows. Did you know they do facials? I didn’t. She’s receiving wonderful training from their corporate program so of course I booked a long overdue facial. It was relaxing and wonderful and I loved the Marni products she used so much I bought the Age Intervention Face Cream and C-Esta Face Serum.
  • Watched the DNC … childless cat (and dog) lady here
  • Met up with Kim for lunch and shopping … bought this cute denim dress (reminds me of a Gap dress I had in the 90’s) and Bermuda length cutoffs because if I haven’t mentioned it, it’s still HOT
  • Attended a Frank & Eileen fall styling event at my favorite boutique, Flaunt … where I bought a few things. More about that later in the week

Woman wearing Frank & Eileen olive green shirt dress and ivory sweater over shoulders.

  • Did more fall shopping  … more below and later this week
  • Puttered in the garden, prior to the wrist incident
  • Attended my BFF Bonnie’s 60th birthday + retirement party. Bonnie and I met in the late 80’s when we worked at Arthur Andersen … and over the course of about a decade we saw each other through some major life ups and downs. She’s one of those friends who I don’t see often but when I do it’s like we never spent a second apart. Love her so much and treasure her friendship. Here we are now …

And then (mid-90’s), posing with a cardboard cutout of ‘Uncle Arthur’ (Arthur Andersen) …

  • Took lots of dog walks
  • Rang in September right with Earth Wind & Fire

In other news …

A Week in Puglia

It’s a good thing I took a break so I could – finally – pull together my travel diary from Puglia. Puglia is the most beautiful region of Italy and it’s flown a bit under the radar as a travel destination. Well, the cats out of the bag and if you live in the region it’s probably a curse as well as a blessing. Anyway, if you missed it I shared our weeklong Puglia itinerary here. I feel like we only dipped our toes in the water of all the good things Puglia has to offer and want to return and explore more.

Borgo Egnazia pool at sunset.

One of the stand outs from the trip was Puglia’s beautiful, colorful splatter pottery. It’s one of the first things I noticed and it was displayed front and center in the shops throughout the region. Our hotel, Borge Egnazia, even has a signature – mustard yellow + turquoise green – pattern.

Typical of me when traveling, I want everything I see but find it impossible to decide what to bring home. As a result … wah wah wah … I returned empty handed. Since we’ve been back I’ve scoured the internet searching for the authentic stuff and found a few sources.

Super Simple Summer Dinner Menu … for Entertaining or Otherwise

Also during the break I posted a super simple summer dinner menu that we made over and over again for our August dinner parties. August is our most reliable month for outdoor entertaining (we’ve had disasters in June and July and have sworn never again), so it was a busy month on our patio hosting friends and family. Setting a menu template keeps things simple and easy for us … and we can focus on hanging out with our guests and not freaking out trying to get dinner on the table. There’s still a lot of freaking out (by me, not Jim – he asked that I clarify). I also have a summer table setting template that I wrote about here.

Tablesetting on outdoor patio.

I do change things up here and there … for instance I tried out several appetizers. These Pear & Brie Salad Skewers (I added prosciutto) were really delish, same goes for this Golden Fig Bruschetta. And, very similar, and my absolute favorite, these Fig & Prosciutto Crostini. Yum! Dessert is another menu item I’ll change up but our ice cream sandwiches were such a hit I stuck with them.

Fall Pieces from Anthro

I’m not totally in denial about fall and I’ve done a little back-to-school shopping. That’s how I think of it anyway. Do those end of summer, back-to-school feelings ever fully leave us? It’s hard to get excited about fall clothes when it’s 100 degrees outside, but last week I dropped into Anthropology and resistance was futile.

Cross quilted jacket off my fall wish list. This jacket in an autumnal palette is fall perfection … when is it going to cool down so I can wear it?  Same goes for this easy pullover sweater … love its side vents and exaggerated sleeves. Worn alone or over a skirt or dress (I have a couple new dresses I’ll share next week) it’s cozy fall football season ready. And finally these Citizens of Humanity jeans. Do I need another pair of jeans. No! Well, maybe yes … because these are so soft they’re almost like wearing pajamas. I do not like all the stiff, heavy denim that’s everywhere now … add a high waist and ugh. Hard pass.

Slow Horses

The fourth season of Slow Horses debuted last week on Netflix. Sadly it’s rolling out one episode at a time. I wanted to wait for several episodes to accumulate before we dove in, but Jim didn’t want to wait. Watching shows the old fashioned way is probably good for us, but I hate it.

Why are British mystery (crime/spy/dectective) series so good? It really spoils us for anything else. Even though our subscription situation is out of hand, we signed up for Britbox and are binging a wonderful series called The Bay. In related news, the fourth season of Van Der Valk on Masterpiece debuts September 14th.

Early bird tickets are on sale now for one of my favorite fall events … the Art of Mixology is October 19th.

Loved Kym Showers Life Coach latest pod … Declutter Your Life

As if we couldn’t love her more, Jennifer Garner’s home designed and decorated by Steve and Brooke Giannetti, is in the current issue of AD. Take a video tour here.

Ralph Lauren’s Spring 2025 fashion show in the Hamptons … swoon.

Do you have marble tile in your bathroom? I do, but never again. Keeping grout clean is always a challenge but with marble I’m terrified regular cleaning products will do damage. Wirecutter recommended this product and I’m all over it. I bought this grout brush too. Still not excited about cleaning the grout, but no longer in fear.

September and October is boom times for book publishing and these pre-ordered treasures landed in my mailbox this week.  I’ll do a book round up next week … stay tuned.

  • Welcome back. Sorry to read you injured yourself, hope you are fully healed now. Any chance you can share details on Shelby’s jeans, my daughter is looking for a pair and near on impossible to find anything she likes. And to be young and have Shelby’s skin, it looks amazing.

    • Hi Rita, I should know better than to post a picture of Shelby without links to her outfit because I’m always asked. She says her jeans are from Aritzia and sweater from Brandy Melville. I’ll try to find them and update the post. My wrists are much better … and I can do most things. I went back to yoga this week … and it wasn’t 100%, but getting there. Thanks for your concern, and thanks for being here. xo

  • Welcome back Juliet! I missed you, your adventures and your humor! Looking forward to seeing Kim next week.
It looks like, sprayed wrists and all, that you had a fun filled, action packed summer holiday.
I cannot wait to hear more about the new house plans! I am so excited of you and Jim.
Back to school shopping is always fun, I have purchased a few things but not much, its hard to shop when you are hot. Although we have had some cool mornings and it is blissful.
Congratulations to Shelby! The facial sounds wonderful.
Your Dalias are beautiful, how did you manage to keep the deer away? What are you planting for Fall and Winter?
The Pugulia post is a must for anyone thinking of traveling to Italy. It is such a beautiful place and so different from other regions of Italy.
Great minds think alike, I ordered the same books! I cannot wait to read Lady Pamela.
Have a wonderful weekend Juliet, it’s nice to have you back.
    xo Elizabeth

    • Good morning, Elizabeth! Good to be back and my next stop is Pinecones & Acorns. I’m about to pick the last of our dahlias … so sad. Our front, side and backyards are completely fenced so no issues with deer. We do have challenges with other critters who fences mean nothing to. Hope you’re taking time to enjoy your new books this weekend like I am!!! xo

  • Hi Juliet
My brother and BIL worked at AA. My brother was a new hire just before the end. Now my daughter “ studied” thd Enron crisis in school. They both made lifelong friends from those Arthur days!
WZ the wrist injury from pickleball ? Happy Fall!

    • Oh my gosh, Laura … he was there to witness the collapse. So sad. I’m sure it’s quite a fascinating case study! I’ve wondered when someone’s going to make a movie starring Ben Affleck or Matt Damon. Arthur Andersen was such an institution and considered the creme de la creme of what was then the Big 8. Everyone was so proud to work there and I think back on it as one of the best decades of my life. No to the pickleball … although that would have been a better story! I tripped over a wire supporting our lemon tree. I’d been standing over it picking lemons for such a long time I forgot it was there. Oops. Have a great weekend! xo

  • Juliet what a fun read! Your August sounds wonderful. So happy we got to meet up! I had the best day with you. I’m so glad you got those cute pieces at Madewell! Your Anthro look is about perfect for pre fall. That jacket and the bag are darling and yes to softer jeans. I just can’t with the tight stomach high waisted denim. They look great on you too. I wish I could go to Shelby. How nice to have a niece that’s an aesthetician.
Sorry to miss this week with you all. Looking forward to getting back to it next week. Enjoy your weekend!!
    Xo

PS we love Slow Horses too!!!

    • Good morning, Kim! Isn’t Slow Horses the best? I hope you have more sense than we do and hold off until you can watch at least a couple episodes back to back. Hope you’re having the best weekend and can’t wait for you to rejoin us next weekend. xoxo

  • Good to see you back after a summer break. You have a wicked sense of humour , Juliet, which I think is so much part of your charm! I caught the first season of The Bay, set on the west coast of Lancashire, and the second was also excellent, with a different detective. Try looking into Annika, featuring the fabulous Nicola Walker…quirky and addictive…set on the Clyde just down from Glasgow. Personal note: my cousin lives nearby in Gourock , west of Greenock , where the visually stunning arts centre is used as the Police Station . I arrived from London by a PONANT explorer ship ( best cruise line ever!) and while visiting, we all enjoyed a coffee there and the views over the river. A very beautiful part of west Scotland , which the series capture.

Once settled after my upcoming move…’grey divorce’ at 74 with definite downsizing…well, besides the husband! .. and I have finally come up for air…I will check out Britbox for more wonderful British mysteries.

    • Good morning, Cath. Oh my goodness, I’m sorry to hear of your recent life changes. Sounds like you have a plan and I hope you’ll enjoy settling into a place of your own and fixing it up just the way you like it. Definitely check out Britbox … we’re still delving into it but it seems like endless good stuff. Your cruise sounds wonderful, I’ll look into PONANT. I love Nicole Walker too and we’ll check out Annika. Did you see her in Unforgotten? So good. Thanks for catching up with me … I wish you the best as you move forward into this new chapter in your life. I know it will be challenging, but I see a beautiful rainbow at the end of the tunnel. xo

  • Welcome back, Juliet! Whew, how quickly a month flies by! Lots of goodies here. I think we all have missed you. Okay, baby Dylan is so adorable. Enjoy that sweetness. Love that blue and green tablecloth for your pretty outside table. Sacramento is too dang hot for hosting backyard dinners in August. Your books look good, and I want to read Lady Pamela; have you read it yet? I think you’ll love Britbox. So many good shows. I recommend taking a look at Annika, Murder in Provence, and we’re really enjoying The Mallorca Files, to name just a few. Hope your wrists are healing well. Take care!

    • Hi Karen … yes, it’s very hot … thankfully our patio gets shady by 6pm so we can be out there and it’s not too bad.Annika is on my list. I loved Nicola Walker in Unforgotten as well. We started the Mallorca Files and need to get back to it. Britbox is a treasure trove. Hope we’ll all have cooler weather soon … very soon! xo

  • Glad you had a summer break, and glad to see you back, Juliet!

    Just LOVE your gorgeous dahlias!

I am barely thinking about Fall and Fall clothing, tho the weather in Iowa took a sudden shift to cool mornings and evenings last week (at least for now).

I am curious about your future home. We are in the thick of designing our home for “retirement” when we return to Virginia. The design process is exciting, but I haven’t reconciled myself fully to leaving THIS new home that we’ve lived in just 5 years and took 4 years to build, so lots of mixed feelings. It seems that you are facing a somewhat similar situation, but hopefully with less emotional turmoil!

    • Joan, it sounds like we are in the same boat. It’s hard to leave a house you love … and only recently built … for something new. And we all know the work involved in creating that new thing. I’m trying to take one day at a time and remind myself this is not my first rodeo and everything will work out for the best. As my friend Kym Showers says, you cannot make a wrong decision! xo

  • Welcome back, dear Juliet! Your table is stunning! Love all the colors! Your trip to Puglia looks positively fabulous. Just put The Bay on my watch list. Thanks for the pip!

    • Katie! I think you’ll like The Bay … we just finished the 4th season and see that a 5th is being filmed. I wish they’d crank them out a little faster. This waiting 12 months – or more – is for the birds. Thanks for visiting. xoxo

  • HOORAY! You’re finally back, because I have definitely missed you. Even my guys new today was the day you were back.
Thank you for catching us up on your summer (what a bummer about your double sprain-hopefully you are doing better). It has been hot! We, like you, were glued to the Olympics. I had no idea that Massage Envy does facials, and offers a corporate teaching program, too. And the Willows is not too far for me….
Your summer menu sounds delicious, and who doesn’t love an ice cream sandwich-that’s such a fun idea!
I’m excited to hear about all of the little house details coming soon. So glad you are back!

    • Hi Janet … I’ve missed you and happy to be back in action. We’ve had a little bit of a garden disaster and you’ve been on my mind because of your recent horticulture accomplishments. Are you doing any garden advising? xo

      • Good morning and happy Sunday, Juliet! I’d be happy to help with figuring out what is happening in your garden. After seeing the dahlias in your photos, I was hopeful any issues you were having earlier had been worked out. Feel free to share with me what is going on and I will do some research for you.

  • Hi Juliet,
I thoroughly enjoy reading your blog! This week was, as always, a fun read.
I would love a link for the beautiful plaid dress you’re wearing with sweet baby Dylan. It looks like the perfect transition piece.
    Thanks!

    • Hi Amanda! Isn’t it a great dress. In fact, it’s by The Great and I bought it at Flaunt three or four years ago. I wish I could like it but it’s – sadly – long gone. Thanks for being here and enjoy your Sunday! xo

  • Hi Juliet! Sounds like you had a great summer! Good for you for taking some time off. Love your fall fashion finds from Anthro! There is definitely starting to be a fall feel to the air here and some leaves are changing. It is inevitable! Welcome back!

    • Hey there Molly, there’s nothing like fall where you are. Nothing here comes clothes but we do feel slight – and very welcome – changes. See you over on your blog in a minute. xo

  • I have missed weekend meanderings but i am glad you were able to take a summer break! Love seeing the Fall fashion and wondering if it will ever cool off in the Bay Area, I say this every year! I will check out Slow Horses.

    • Morning, Jane … it been a lot cooler in the mornings and evening over here. And our haven’t been quite as hot. That will probably change this week. Ha. And it won’t be long before I’m complaining about being cold! Have a great weekend. xo
