Are You Ready for It … Fall Baking, Outfits, Reading + More

Today on Weekend Meanderings, it’s all about fall. Fall outfits, fall reading, fall baking and more.

Happy weekend friends! It’s time for the weekend post with Kim and Elizabeth. Kim is back … we’re all present and accounted for and ready to share weekly roundup of inspirations and goings on.

There’s no denying it, fall is in the air. And pumpkins are at Orchard Nursery … please leave some for me. In addition to shorter days and cooler nights, our trees are dropping leaves, needles and acorns like nobody’s business. And the squirrels are working overtime. Poor Maggie is being driven insane by their activity. I picked the last of our Dahlias this week, they’ve been incredibly beautiful and plentiful this year.

Early Fall Outfits

This week I intended to publish a What I Bought for Fall post, but I’m slow and missed my own deadline. Not to worry, it’s coming soon. In the meantime I’m sharing a couple of transitional, casual looks that are going to get me through the next couple of months.

It’s the time of year in Northern California where sweaters make an appearance but sandals are still going strong.

A couple of weeks ago I bought these Bermuda length cut-offs when shopping with Kim. I’ve worn them nearly everyday since along with a white tee or tank. This week it cooled off so I added a lightweight cropped, cotton cardigan, and finally pulled the trigger on these suede Beek slides that I LOVE and will be wearing constantly the next couple of months. Did you know (I did not) that Beek donates one day’s worth of meals to a child in need for every pair of shoes sold?

Kim must be a bad influence because I bought this denim dress when I was with her too.

I’ll be packing it for an upcoming wine country weekend where it will likely be warm (hot) during the day, and chilly at night. My cropped cotton cardigan will come in handy.

Apple Cinnamon Scones

Signs of fall are everywhere but you know how I really know it’s fall? My Apple Cider Aperol Spritz recipe zooms to the top of the most visited posts and shared Pins.

Nothing says fall like a good apple recipe so I’m kicking off the season with Apple Cinnamon Scones. I’ve been craving apple cinnamon scones and saving recipes to Pinterest. I’m going to try them all and find the best one. I started out with this recipe from Live Well Bake Often and it’s pretty darned good. The recipe suggests, and I agree, the scones be eaten the same day they’re baked.

I don’t bring pumpkins out until October 1st, it’s a hard and fast rule. I made an exception for this pumpkin print dish towel that my BFF Jane’s daughters gave me. It’s so cute I had to start using it right away. It’s from Anthropology, they have some beautiful autumn kitchen linens … like this fall foliage motif and this trick or treat towel … fun if you have kids or grands in the house.

Cozy Up with These Books

Reading is one of my favorite things … always has been. I was a kid who never had a problem entertaining herself … with a book. I probably picked it up from my mom, a former English teacher, who always had her nose buried in a book. At the beginning of this year I resolved to up my book reading which has fallen off in recent years. I blame the internet.

My most recent and charming read is the The Potting Shed Murder by Paula Sutton. Tag line – There’s death amongst the dahlias. How can you resist? You may know Paula as Instagram sensation @hillhousevintage and her first novel is what I’d call a cozy mystery. Set in the English countryside there may be a few autobiographical elements to the story. In any event, it’s my hope that this is the first in a series of Daphne Brewster of Pudding Corner mysteries.

My most highly anticipated fall (and beyond) book releases (in order of release date) ~

Kingmaker: Pamela Harriman’s Astonishing Life of Power, Seduction, and Intrigue by Sonia Purnell

I’ve been fascinated with Pamela Harriman since reading Sally Bedell Smith’s biography,  Reflected Glory: The Life of Pamela Churchill Harriman, published a year before Pamela’s death. She went from English baron’s daughter to United States diplomat and was up close and personal to some of the most important events – and people – of the 20th century. I can’t wait to read this new biography.

Be Ready When the Luck Happens, a Memoir by Ina Garten

Don’t you love that title? Ina’s going on a book tour, but not just any book tour … more like Taylor Swift stadium tour. Ok that’s an exaggeration but the tour is billed as An Evening with Ina and is filling theaters and auditoriums around the country. Sadly, for those of us who didn’t act quickly enough, most of her stops are sold out. This article in the New Yorker will whet your appetite … ha!

Signed copies of the book (signed on book plates) are available at Barefoot Contessa.

Patina Homes & Gardens by Brooke and Steve Giannetti

The Giannetti’s are about to release the fifth book in their Patina Home series and first book since relocating their family (people and animals) to Tennessee. The new book is being released exclusively through their shop in October. Signed copies purchased directly from them will begin shipping October 1st … pre-order signed copies here. The book’s wide release is slated for January 28th and can be pre-ordered here. The price is the same but shipping costs vary.

Martha: The Cookbook: 100 Favorite Recipes, With Lessons and Stories From My Kitchen by Martha Stewart

What can I say, it’s Martha.

Cher: The Memoir, Part One by, who else, Cher

Only Cher could write a memoir in two parts. I’ve always loved Cher, who doesn’t?  But I’ve come to know more about her than I ever thought possible due to my BFF Shelley being a super fan. Shelley’s husband has seen Cher so many times he begged Shelley to ‘please take someone else’ to Cher’s last two concert tours, and that someone else was me!

Part One takes us up through Cher’s marriage to Sonny. And Part Two, coming early next year, probably begins with her relationship with Gregg Allman. If he was alive, and I wasn’t married, he’d be my boyfriend. Just saying.

There’s Always Room at the Table: Farmhouse Recipes from My Family to Yours by Kaleb Wyse

Kaleb aka @wyseguide, is one of my favorite social media follows. His life on his family’s farm in Iowa intrigues me … all that cooking, gardening, and decorating. I couldn’t be more excited for his first book. But before we get carried away, it’s not coming until next year. Still, we can be first in line. I hope the book includes some looks inside his recently – and beautifully – renovated farmhouse.

My Honest Opinion on Jones Road Beauty Miracle Balm

Unless you live under a rock you’ve heard of Jones Road Beauty Miracle Balm. Jones Road is the newish skincare and makeup line by Bobbi Brown following the sale of her eponymous line. While everyone on the internet has been extolling the virtues of Miracle Balm, I held back over fear it would feel heavy or greasy on my skin. That said, I’ve been Miracle Balm curious and when Jones Road sent me a couple of shades to try … I didn’t hesitate.

Jars of Jones Road Miracle Balm on bathroom vanity.

First of all, what is it? According to Jones Road’s ‘how to use it’ guide (which is very helpful), Miracle Balm is a ‘no-makeup makeup’ with a multitude of uses and, depending on the shade, (there are 13, including the very popular Pinky Bronze which I did not try) it can be used for moisture, glow, color correction, blush, bronzer, and highlighter. Wow.

The most satisfying part of the entire thing is breaking the balm’s surface seal.

This week I test drove the two shades I received – Flushed and Dusty Rose. I liked one better than the other, here’s why …

First I tried the Flushed shade and applied it like a cream blush (with fingers over cheekbones) and over a lightweight foundation. Quite honestly, I didn’t see any blush effect and felt like I needed something more. Maybe I could have layered it up … they suggest that. I did try blending with their Everything Brush which I also received, but didn’t find it helpful. It’s a good brush though and I’ll use it for other things.

Next I tried the Dusty Rose shade. This time I used moistuizer/suncreen mixed with Glotion as a base and applied it same as before … fingers to cheekbones. The blush effect was noticeable. It’s light and subtle with just a hint of rosy glow. I didn’t feel it absorbed into my skin and it felt a little bit sticky. Someone compared it to the feeling of Aquaphor on the skin, and I think it’s totally accurate. Jones Road suggests applying it over powder to minimize the shine while keeping the glow. Maybe that would reduce stickiness. Adding more makeup layers while trying to achieve a no-make up look isn’t what I have in mind, but I’ll give it a try and see.

Bottom line, I’m not in love with it, but I did appreciate the rosy glow and will continue using and experimenting with the Dusty Rose shade. I have a feeling that those with dryer skin will like this product more than those with oily or combination skin. I didn’t do a deep dive into Miracle Balm’s ingredients because I know Jones Road to be clean, cruelty-free beauty brand. It does contain jojoba seed oil, an active ingredient that could be irritating to sensitive skin. It hasn’t bothered me … so far. Kim also tried Miracle Balm so be sure to check out her review too. Have you tried Miracle Balm? Let me know in the comments.

Odds & Socks ~

Speaking of books, favorite blogger Preppy Empty Nester is back from summer vacation and her summer book round up nearly bankrupted me.

Another favorite blogger and podcaster, Shannon Ables, was a guest on the Frugal Friends podcast chatting about contentment, small luxuries and spending habits. I loved listening to Shannon on the other side of the interview desk … she’s fun and engaging and I appreciate her outlook and approach to life.

Have you watched The Perfect Couple? Probably, because everyone’s talking about it and it’s numero uno on Netflix. You may have already learned the choreography. If you know you know. And if you don’t, binge it tonight.

  • I read “The Life of the Party” about Pamela Harriman years ago. The author, Christopher Ogden, spent months of interviews for her proposed autobiography, but it was abandoned. Ogden then ran with what he had and it’s thorough.

    • Hi Suzanne … that’s interest and I don’t think I knew that about the interview. I’ve not read his book … oversight! xo

  • Hi. Thanks for book recommendations! Definitely preordering. By the way your link to There’s Always Room At The Table links to Ina Garten’s page…which I read with interest. Lol

  • Hi Juliette! Love your jeans-shorts transitional outfit! I found the sticky feel of the Miracle Balm off-putting at first, but I have grown accustomed to it and find it an easy addition to my everyday makeup routine. I am kind of surprised they haven’t changed the formula a bit to make it less sticky…I am thinking of giving the Jones Road foundation a try. Just finished watching The Perfect Couple Last night. Such a great watch! Have a great weekend!

    • Hi Molly, you’re right, with all the comments about the stickiness they might have made a few tweaks. I’m curious how you apply yours and over or under what? Glad you enjoyed The Perfect Couple … what a great cast and gorgeous sets. xo

  • Great information, thank you. My husband and I leave our central coast home EARLY tomorrow for a month in Utah and Colorado. We begin our adventure on RZR’s and off road motorcycles for a five day off road journey to the Grand Canyon. Yippee!
We are packing our RV and towing our Miata. I just grabbed the APEROL for your hot drink idea. Can you picture this on a cold night in Telluride! Oh yaaaa

    • Hi there … what a fun adventure the next month will bring. And beautiful scenery. I’ll think of you in Telluride! xo

  • I wasn’t a fan of scones either until last year when I stumbled upon an Orange and Cranberry Scone recipe. My family and friends loved them. Later I tried an Almond Scone with the same success. I’m looking forward to making your Apple and Cinnamon Scone! Thanks for sharing!

  • Wow Juliet a lot of good things here !! First of all, love the Beeks and the sweater. So glad you got the shorts and the jean dress. They look great on you. You know I am a scone fan. Those look like you need your own bake shop! I am ready for scone season.
I am ready to get all these books! I am intrigued by the biographies. Ina really had a rough childhood. I had no idea. Pamela Harriman also looks like a good one.. I love when fall books come out! Will check out the podcast and that Perfect Couple show. Have a great weekend xo

    • Morning, Kim! I’m really looking forward to Ina’s book. I knew she were challenges growing up but have never been clear on what they were … we’ll know it all soon enough. I wonder if she’ll touch on the brouhaha with Martha. I think you’d enjoy the biography on Pamela Harriman she’s an incredible figure and was part of the Truman Capote Swan era. xo

  • Your post was a fun read! I LOVE cut offs and sweaters – a favorite outfit for this old California girl! Your outfit was exactly it! Love the cropped cardigan! and Frank and Eileen – always!
I use Miracle Balm and the dusty rose is my go-to shade, too! it feels like it lasts and the blush is subtle – which I like!
Shorter days are feeling like Autumn, but the warm weather is still happening in SLO (Monterey is perfect). Pumpkin stuff EVERYWHERE! Trader Joe’s is really hard to resist – so I didn’t! I love spice and pumpkin flavors!
    Happy Weekend!
I love love love to read too! Looking forward to Ina’s book! Just finished The Briar Club by Kate Quinn – engaging and so good!

    • Good morning, Dianne … so ready for our weather to catch up to pumpkin season. My favorite time of year. It must be wonderful by the coast. Thanks for the book recommendation, I’m checking it out now! xo

  • Love the whole post. I am one of the few people in the world that doesn’t like the fall! I have to force myself into it…It gets dark too early and really affects my sleep patterns. But we go to the beach almost every weekend and the weather is fantastic with lots to do (Bay Area/Central Coast) so I’m very grateful for Indian Summer here.
Picked up about 10 of those Cinderella pumpkins at TJs yesterday even though I tried to hold off until October!
Have to try those scones, thanks for post

    • Hi Valletta, fall can be experienced very differently depending on where we live. When we were in Washington it was cold and dark and I hated it. On the other hand, if the weather was cooler here I could buy Cinderella pumpkins too. My favs. I’ll wait for cooler days when they won’t bake on our porch. Hope you have a lovely weekend. xo

  • I too, am not a fan of Miracle Balm. If I wear enough to give me a bit of glow, it’s just too sticky.
Thank you for sharing so much great information! Fall came early to Anacortes this year and maybe your post will help me with the transition. I’ve got Ina’s new book on order!

  • Hi Juliet

Miracle Balm did not work for me either. Way too greasy for my still occasionally pimple prone skin. I love the idea but not the product. I do love her eye pencils!

    • Cindy, I think you and I have similar skin traumas from our youth that carried over and this sort of balm doesn’t work for us. I appreciate your tip on the eye pencils. I love her night cream. xo

  • Hi Juliet,
Thank you for a lovely post! I have tried Miracle Balm and didn’t love it either. But l do love Jones Road black mascara and their eye shadow shades and l have just bought a lipstick from them to try out. Can’t wait for lna’s book. I went to her Barefoot Contessa site and bought a signed copy of her book as an extra treat. Love her so!! I love your book choices! Have a lovely week!

    • Francesca … that’s for the tip off to Ina’s signed copies. I might cancel my Amazon order and do the same … since I’m missing our on her book tour. Thanks for sharing your similar experience with Miracle Balm. I like some of her other products too and will try the mascara. Happy weekend! xo

  • Hi Juliet,
Thank you for the NorCal weather update, as I will be home to Palo Alto and visiting “The City” and Carmel in the next weeks. I definitely was leaning too heavily into Fall and your cutoffs and sandals gave me a reality check! I love your Fall scones recipe and several of your book suggestions. We did catch “The Perfect Couple” and SURPRISE, my husband enjoyed it a lot because of the whodunit aspect. (I am over a lot of the in-your-face gore of contemporary action/thriller/murder mysteries, so it has become harder to find shows we both enjoy.) I have loved seeing your wonderful dahlias this summer…

  • I also do not like the feel of the Jones Road Miracle Balm. I ordereded it thinking it would be an ideal product delivering a bit of color and extra hydration. It feels sticky and very unappealing!

  • Juliet, love this post!
It’s so nice to have all three of us back together! Paula is such a great write, I too enjoyed the Potting Shed Murders.
I cannot wait to get my books! I love Wyse Guy, Ina and Martha! I did not know about the Cher book. Frankly with a life like hers she might need 3 or 4 books.
Your outfits look beautiful, as always. How wonderful to shop with Kim, she has great taste and the shorts look great on you.
As do the scones! Hot out of the oven with lots of butter is the way that I like them.
Jones Road Beauty is something that I see all of the time, it is so nice to have an honest review. I have loaded up my cart a few times but never make the purchase. Now I do not think I will.
    Have a wonderful week Juliet!
    xo

    • Hi Elizabeth … wouldn’t it be great if Paula created a murder mystery series?!!! You’re right about Cher, she could have 3 or 4 volumes and she seems to be writing a 5th right now. I’m so excited for the October book releases to roll in … it’s chilly here this morning and feels so cozy. With football, cocoa and a good book I’m in my element. This is the best season. So glad the band’s back together. xoxo

  • Hi Juliet, I always enjoy looking at the flowers you grow. Dahlias are like little sculptures, their symmetry and colors are unique. In SF Golden Gate Park they have a huge section of Dahlias, and I think they are grown by different people, each has their own small plot. I wish we lived in an environment where my honey, a Master Gardener could grow Peonies, Dahlias, and Hydrangeas. I should be thankful we have a rose garden.
Your Apple cinnamon scones look really good. I can tell you are an excellent baker. Baking is not easy. I love to bake and share my goodies too.
I have Ins Garten’s memoir on order. I like her, she seems so real and down to earth. Like how she built her empire. That takes lots of moxie.
I bet you and Kim are great shopping buds. You both have excellent taste.

    • Hi Katherine! I’ve read about the dahlia in Golden Gate Park … must be amazing and adding it to my late summer adventures next year. I’d love to grow peonies too, thank goodness to Trader Joes who always has a plentiful supply in season. Can’t wait for Ina’s memoir … less than a month! xo

  • Happy weekend Juliet!!!! You know I loveddd The Perfect Couple! That opening song is so catchy! Those apple cider aperol spritz’s look amazing! I shared your recipe in my weekly Nesting post this morning. Hope you have a wonderful Sunday!

  • Happy Sunday, Juliet! I’m loving the bit of cooler weather we’re having, and I’m so ready for fall. It’s just the best time of year in our area.
The Potting Shed Murder absolutely sounds like a book I need to read.
I love the items you bought while out shopping with Kim. Such good, basic pieces that will definitely see you through these hot days/cool nights of fall in California.
Apple is not a flavor of scone I’ve ever tried before. Now I want to bake some. Have you found a good scone recipe book?
Your dish towel is so pretty, too! I like the one with all the different types of pumpkins.
The last of your dahlias. What do you have coming next in the garden? I’m very interested in hearing more about your garden issues.

    • Hi Janet, I’ll email you in the next couple of days about the garden. Thanks for a reminder that I do have scone cook books which I’ll dig out immediately. The apple and cinnamon flavor is too good with a scone. I might try baking my standard scone with apples and see what happens. I love the dishtowel so much and what you probably can’t see online is that it has little spots of embroidery. I just love it. And I’m loving this cooler weather … it suddenly feels very fall. xo
