It’s My Blogiversary … Let’s Celebrate on Weekend Meanderings

Happy weekend, friends!

Today I’m joining Elizabeth and Kim for Weekend Meanderings.

It’s been an eventful week.

And I don’t mean that in a good way.

I’ve been under the weather.

Causing me to miss a blogging conference.

In Atlanta.

My friends Kim and Mary Ann are there.

I miss them but I know they’re having a great time!

In addition to that disappointment, I had to call a plumber this week.

That’s always never fun.

But there’s good news too.

Grand-Niece, Haddie, turned one yesterday!

Happy Birthday, Haddie!

And it’s my 2nd Blogiversary!

Can you believe it’s been two years since I hit publish on my very first post?!

In honor of this momentous occasion.

Today I’m highlighting five bloggers who inspired me to begin my adventures in blogging.

Let’s call them the Original Five.

They were the very first blogs I read and followed.

Are you ready?

Let’s go …

CHANGE YOUR MIDLIFE (FORMERLY THE RICH LIFE ON A BUDGET / IN THE WINE COUNTRY)

Way back in 2010, a mutual friend told me that one of her friends started a blog. My initial reaction … what’s a blog? Well, I soon found out.

Adrienne Shubin’s blog is the first blog I ever heard of, read, and followed. She started out as The Rich Life on a Budget morphed into The Rich Life in the Wine Country, and most recently became Change Your Midlife. Adrienne’s been blogging a long time and these name changes reflect her journey. These days she blogs less frequently, but keeps up fairly regularly on her Instagram.

A couple of years ago Adriene and her recently retired husband decided to improve their health and began intermittent fasting. They lost weight, begin exercising regularly and are now in the best shape of their lives. Adrienne writes movingly about what led them to embrace lifestyle changes and how they continue to evolve in their health journey. They’ve since sold their home in the wine country and are traveling across country in a motor home with their dogs. She even made the national (and local) news, and you can read about her here and here.

A STROLL THROUGH LIFE

I wish I could remember how I stumbled upon Marty’s blog, A Stroll Through Life (Thirty & Chic – On a budget). If I had to guess it would be somehow connected to Adrienne, but I just don’t recall. While Adrienne’s blog is in the lifestyle category, Marty’s is firmly planted in the home’s décor realm. Her home’s décor … and how she transformed her ‘builder basic’ into something more unique and personal. Without breaking the bank. Marty is retired and lives in Arizona near her grown children and grandchildren. And she loves to entertain. You can also keep up with Marty on Instagram.

PREPPY EMPTY NESTER

In 2014 I became a full-on blog junkie. That’s when I discovered Preppy Empty Nester.  It was love at first sight site. Katie Clooney, as she calls herself, stole my heart with her wicked sense of humor, hilarious family stories and traditional (and colorful) home décor. I’ll never forget when she and her good friend, Dude, appeared on the Meredith Viera Show wearing their Christmas tree skirts as capes. Or ‘scapes’ as they termed them. And, yes, I said her friend, Dude. All the players in Katie’s life have cute nicknames. Oh, and did I mention her Mister’s cooking?

Sadly, for us Katie takes the summers off from her blog. She has a life! Not to worry, she’ll be back after Labor Day. In the meantime, you can entertain yourself with her extensive blog archives. Start at the beginning, that’s what I did. And you can keep up with her on Instagram while she summers.

CLASSIC CASUAL HOME

It was also 2014 when I saw Mary Ann’s Southern California home featured in BHG magazine. She wrote about it here. I started following her on Instagram and soon realized she had moved to San Francisco. What? Just across the Bay. My recently renovated Walnut Creek home needed finishing touches and Mary Ann came to the rescue. And she’s helped me with two homes since then. Not only is she a talented designer but she’s so much fun and now we’re friends. I remember having lunch with Mary Ann at the San Francisco Design Center – years ago – and she said, ‘you should start a blog.’ That started the wheels turning but it still took several more years for me to finally do it.

Anyway, Classic Casual Home is my all-time favorite home décor blog … although Mary Ann covers other topics too from fashion and beauty to travel and entertaining.  She does a Sunday blog series with Cindy Hattersley and Most Lovely Things that inspired our Weekend Meanderings.

Mary Ann and her husband recently moved to Florida and she’s decorating her amazing new coastal home. She just revealed her updated entryway. I’m dying over the wallpaper.

THE VINTAGE CONTESSA

And finally, La Contessa! She needs no introduction. On the off chance you don’t know and aren’t following her … here’s what she promises her readers:

‘Her musings and passions. What inspires and dazzles. Loving all things worn and rusted. Age.

The grandeur of the past. Bottom line … Contessa Chatter!’

Well ok then.

How did I discover the Contessa? I’m not sure. Probably through another blog we were both following, Have Some Decorum. Contessa is staunch blog commenter and I believe that’s where the connection happened. She was collecting birthday cards for this blogger, and she posted her address. It was near me, and I replied, ‘I know where you live.’ She thought I was a stalker. Obviously. But she still invited me to drop off a card, and then welcomed me into her home. She ushered me in and told me to sit in the upholstered, vintage chair she keeps in her kitchen. I was enchanted. She was wearing a caftan, just like on the blog. With velvet slippers. Her home was even more fabulous than it looks on the blog. And I thought, it’s good to be the Contessa’s friend!

The Contessa had been after me for years to start my blog. She can be quite persistent. When I finally did, I’m not sure who was more relieved. Me or her.

In addition to her blog, Contessa is an avid Instragrammer under the name Contessa and Her Pig. Yes, she has a pet pig. You’ll have to follow her to learn more.

So, there you have it, my original five blogging inspirations.

To whom I owe so much.

How many of these women do you follow?

Here I am with Annie (Most Lovely Things), Heidi (Heidi Michelle Art Studio), Elizabeth (The Vintage Contessa), Kim (Northern California Style),

Mary Ann (Classic Casual Home), Cindy (Cindy Hattersley Design)

Now let’s see what’s on Elizabeth and Kim’s minds.

IN OTHER NEWS ~

A word about blogging.

It’s not as easy as it looks.

There’s a lot more involved than meets the eye.

And I’ve had lots of help and support along the way.

At the beginning, the Contessa and Mary Ann (ha … sounds like Gilligan’s Island!) gave me big shout outs which resulted in a nice jump start in readers and subscribers.

Subscribers are everything, by the way.

And, if you’re one of them I’m incredibly grateful.

Many other bloggers have mentioned my blog, linked to my posts, and even featured me.

Heady stuff.

I’m also part of the Thistlewood mastermind coaching group, led by KariAnne Wood.

Joining forces with Kim and Elizabeth for Weekly Meanderings is another milestone and highlight.

Two years ago, I would not have dreamed it possible.

Blogging is such a supportive community and I’m lucky to be part of it.

And you.

You!

So many of you have shared the blog with your friends.

How wonderful is that?!

Like I said, I’m incredibly lucky.

And grateful.

So, thank you for being here.

In my little corner of the Interwebs.

It means so much.

In addition to the blogs I’ve already talked about, let me share a few others I consider must reads  ~

    • Good morning, Paula! Thanks so much … these are all such wonderful blogs and I’m super excited if you discover a new one. Happy weekend! xo

  • Happy Blogiversary I truly enjoy your blog!!
I hope you are feeling much better. So sorry you had to miss Haven. Best to be at home when sick for sure though. No place like home (when not feeling great).
Better safe than sorry anyway. My hubby initially thought he just had a summer cold or sinus issues and tested positive (for 2 full weeks) for Covid in June (double vaxed & double boosted BTW). So much for that theory, right?

Anyway….hope you are feeling better & Jim’s taking extra good care of you.
    Hugs,
    ~Scarlett

    • Thanks, Scarlett … I’m missing you guys. And feeling sorry for myself. My husband returned home from a week long work conference and tested positive this morning. Sigh. Looking forward to hearing about the conference when you return! xo

  • Thank you so much for the mention Juliet!!! You are too kind. I can only hope mine is as wonderful as yours in 2 years!!! MWAH!!!

  • Congratulations on your Second Bloganniversary! I have enjoyed your blog from day one! One your blog highlights for me is when you post book selections. I am always on the lookout for a book that I can enjoy sipping a glass of ice tea out on my front patio.
    Sending you healing thoughts!

    • Barbara! I love it … an original reader. What a gem you are … thank you. I’m delight to know you enjoy the book selections. I love books but sometimes I wonder if they resonate with readers. I’m going to make a note to include more books. Love the input … keep it coming! xo

  • I love your blog! I have followed you for almost two years and have loved all of them. Your newly renovated home is just beautiful, especially your patio area. You have great taste. Thanks for mentioning the bloggers you follow. I already follow a few of them but plan to add more to my list.

    • Thank you, Maureen! I appreciate you. And I know you’ll enjoy these other blogs as well. Report back! xo

  • Juliet, Congrats on two years of blogging. No one realizes how much fortitude, commitment and sheer work it is to consistently blog. Your blog always has a high bar and is is inspiring as well as approachable, and well to be honest, funny. You crack me up and I love that about your writing, a rare thing in a design blog. You are doubly talented.
You make it look easy, but as you said before we are really like ducks paddling like mad under the water! I also followed Adrienne, and she might have been my first blog I read. She was a pioneer and she doesn’t know it. We went together to my first blogger conference way back in 2014… or maybe it was 2013??? It was called Blogher in San Jose. Seems a long time ago now!

This weekend was not the same without you with us. So very sorry you could not join, but I am taking notes like mad and hoping we get together with Annie and Mary Ann and do this all again soon. Take good care of yourself and sending big hugs,

    xo Kim

  • Oh Juliet… I can’t tell you how touched by your sweet words. Before you stepped into blogging you were such a supportive, sweet reader. I was so happy when you took the plunge!! And the beauty that you have added to Blogland1 I loved every minute of watching you renovate and decorate two beautiful homes. You are the hostess with the mostess and entertain so beautifully! I’ve loved your reels- especially the ones involving a cocktail!! Hmmm… I wonder why? Anyway, congrats on your blogiversary and I hope that you blog for many years to come. xx

  • Cheers! How can it be two years?
I always enjoy catching up with what’s going on with you and wish you many more years of blogging.

Atlanta is probably brutally hot this weekend but I’m sorry you are under the weather.

    • Thanks, Karen … you’ve always been a big supporter of my little bloggie. I thank you. Yes, I hear it was quite hot in Hotlanta and apparently very cold indoors. Note to self, if venturing to hot weather conferences, pack a parka and gloves. I’m recovering and Jim is down. Ugh … never a dull moment! Hope you’re enjoying a wonderful weekend! xo

  • Juliet,
Congratulations on your 2 year milestone! Blogging is a tough gig and it is hard to come up with consistent content that engages readers and keeps them coming back. You have done that in spades, your beautiful blog, smiling face, effervescent personality and great taste comes through in each and every post! I have loved “meeting you” and following along as your grow and I cannot wait to see where this blog takes you in the future.
I am sorry that you were unable to attend Haven, I know how much you were looking forward to it. Next year will be your year.
Should there be a meet up on the East coast with MA, Cindy, Annie, Kim I would love to be included! I want to finally meet all of you wonderful ladies after all these years of following along on your blogs.
As for the wonderful women who inspired you, MA is amazing, Katie is witty and always keeps me entertained, Marty is one of the first blogs I ever follow over 10 years ago and I love her decorating and link party. And Elizabeth keeps us entertained with Banksy, her garden, style and more.

I hope that you and Jim are up and about soon, take it easy my friend.

    Happy anniversary!
    xo Elizabeth

  • Juliet! I can’t believe you’ve only been blogging 2 years and you are already so professional. I adore this community! I’m so sad that we had to miss the conference! Meeting up IRL is one of the best perks of blogging! Next time!
It’s funny, Adriennes’ original blog was one of my first blogs that I read too! In fact, on my one year blog anniversary, I did a give away for a Glassbaby candle (the one called Gratitude) and Adrienne won!

  • PS – This is an amazing post – so much info!! First of all – I saw the ladies in Atlanta and am so sorry you couldn’t go with them. But lemme tell ya – the weather where you are is WAAAAY better than the weather where they were – trust me.
I love Preppy Nester and La Contessa! (You and I have twin caftans.) I have been following nester for years and I met Contessa through Cindy Hattersley’s blog – both great!
You are really lucky to have all these ladies in the same area! I don’t know anyone in my area that blogs. I SO agree with your blog comments. It is MUCH harder than it looks. And mentions and shout outs are such a game changer for a new blogger. THANK YOU MY FRIEND!

  • Hi Juliet,
Congratulations on two years! Your blog is always fun to read, you have great style and are a good writer! Plus, you always make me laugh! I’ve been following along since even before your first post, eagerly waiting for you to start your blog. Glad you got a nudge from E and now look where all this has taken you.
Thanks for mentioning me in among all you professional ladies who do it so well! I’m really happy to call you a friend, funny how social media helped make that happen.
    Xoxo Heidi

  • So sorry u are under the weather and had to miss out on the trip to Atlanta. Happy blogging anniversary! Hard to believe u have been blogging for just 2 years. It’s so professional and polished, I thought for sure u had been at it for a much longer time. I follow more than half of the talented group of ladies u mention. Now i have the others to do deep dives on. That contessa can be quite persistent when she sets her sights on someone w untapped talent. Feel better soon! XOXO
