Weekend Meanderings … Caftans, Spring Garden Tour, A Laundry Tip & Summer Wedding Guest Dresses

Happy weekend, friends!

Jim and I are in Chicago.

For a wedding.

You know I love weddings.

This one is formal.

I’ll recycle my navy dress and gold jacket

from Kyle and Melody’s wedding.

And change things up a bit with my hair and jewelry.

Are you ready for Weekend Meanderings?!

Let’s get into it and then we’ll hop over and visit Kim and Elizabeth.

CASUAL SUMMER WEDDING GUEST LOOKS

Speaking of weddings, my middle niece is getting married in early June. It’s going to be a very small, family wedding. Outdoors at a cute winery. It’s a late afternoon and evening event. And it’s likely to be warm (possibly hot). I’m considering two dress options for her big day. It’s hard to decide. Which one do you like best? Let me know in the comments.

Option #1

I adore the new Mirjana Wedge by Sarah Flint. Remember you can use my code SARAHFLINT-BAJULIETR to receive $50 off your first pair of Sarah Flint shoes.

Option #2

HOW TO WASH A BASEBALL HAT

Last Friday was National Laundry Day. And the laundry guy, Patric Richardson, made a repeat appearance on Live with Kelly and Ryan. Kelly is a huge fan and loves doing laundry. I wrote about Patric’s life changing book Laundry Love and my revamped laundry routine here. And did a brief update on my adventures in laundry here.

And now, a new laundry skill! Washing a baseball cap. Jim has a ton of baseball caps and is constantly acquiring more. Insert eye roll. We need a dedicated closet for his extensive collection. Or something like this. He has a few favorites that he wears on repeat. I had no idea how to clean them so bear with me if this isn’t news to you. Patric says, put them in the dishwasher. Yes, the dishwasher. Top rack. To make things easier he recommends this hat washer frame cage apparatus to keep the cap’s shape. Genius. I ordered a set of two.

When I shared this revelation with Jim, his response … ‘I knew that.’ Ok, well, I guess he didn’t feel it necessary to share this information with me. The cage thing was new to him though. I’m holding my breath until it arrives so I can wash some of his favorite, and very dirty, hats. Stay tuned.

GET ORGANIZED WITH THE HOME EDIT, SEASON TWO

Everyone’s favorite home organizers, Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin, aka The Home Edit, are back for season two of their Netflix series. I binged the first half of the season and need to finish up. Other things keep getting in the way. Ugh. I know, my priorities are way screwed up. I’ve been following this dynamic duo on Instagram for five years or so. Their Instagram travel stories are legendary.

Season two lit a fire under me to get serious about properly organizing Snowberry’s kitchen. I went to The Container Store to look at all the The Home Edit organization products. I got home and spent hours flipping between The Container Store website and both The Home Edit organization books, A Guide to Organizing and Life, mapping out a plan. It’s a lot like piecing a puzzle together. We’ll see how it works out. Look, they even have a workbook. Maybe I should get that too. I devoured the first issue of their new magazine, Feel-Good Organizing on the plane. Who says magazines are dead.

I’m stunned and so sad to learn that Clea has breast cancer. In her Instagram post she shared that she discovered a lump herself and was unable to get an appointment with her OB. If she can’t get an appointment with her doctor, who can? Long story short, her GP finally got her in for a mammogram which confirmed her worst fears. She’s chosen to make her experience public to encourage others to prioritize and advocate for their health. I know she’ll continue sharing her journey with candor and a good dose of humor. We’re pulling for you, Clea. And, please friends, be diligent about your annual mammogram.

SHIPLAP AND SHELLS SPRING GARDEN TOUR

Meet Kim of Shiplap and Shells.  And tour her spring garden and greenhouse here. Wait until you see that greenhouse!

Woman in Coastal Garden

Kim lives in a charming cottage on the shores of Puget Sound in the Pacific Northwest. She’s an incredible gardener and you’ll be inspired by her cottage-style garden. Her interiors reflect her garden style … cheerful, colorful and approachable and inviting. She was a novice gardener when she, her husband, and cute dogs, bought their forever home nine years ago, but she was a fast study. And now she shares her gardening tips and tricks with all of us on her blog and in her Facebook group. You can find Kim on Instagram too. She’s a wonderful source of year-round gardening and decorating inspiration. So good, she’s been featured in Cottages and Bungalows, Better Homes & Gardens and The Cottage Journal magazines. You’re in for a treat.

THE CONTESSA CAFTAN

In other exciting news, my Contessa Caftan arrived! And earlier in the week La Contessa herself featured me (it) on The Vintage Contessa blog!

Woman Wearing Caftan in Garden

The Contessa Caftan’s are made by Trish at Cottage by Design (remember her heart shaped pillows?). I’m wearing the original monogram design in porcelain. Contessa and Trish just introduced several new monogram design options, including the Lavern & Shirley. That makes me laugh. And a French crest. In addition to the caftan, there’s also a tunic. You choose from Trish’s Contessa-approved fabrics, your monogram style and color. Contessa’s post provides the full scoop on how to order!

So, there you have it.

My favorite things of the week.

Let’s go see what Kim and Elizabeth are sharing today.

As always, I appreciate your visit and welcome your thoughts in the comments below.

  • Option 2 for a Winery Wedding! Love the lighter background with the blue floral and those shoes will look great with the dress. And thanks for the tip on washing baseball caps in the dishwasher. Does it matter which automatic dishwashing detergent you use? Would just want to be sure there isn’t anything in the detergents that could leave bleach spots on our hats.

    • That’s a good question … I’m going to have to inquire more about the specifics of the washing process. I’m still waiting for my washing cages to arrive. Stay tuned. And, you are with the majority on dress #2!!! xo

  • The second option is my favorite.

Considering the baseball cage option. Assume you run the dishwasher with only the hats in it?

    • Thanks, Melissa. Dress #2 seems to be the fav for the wedding. I assume the same about the dishwasher … hats only. I and might runt he quick wash first to see what happens. My hat cages haven’t arrived yet so I’ve yet to experiment. Stay tuned! xo

  • Option 2 for the wedding! Really enjoy your blog! I just shared the baseball tip with my husband.. do you let them airdry in the cage?

    • Thank you so much, Kathryn! And good question you the hat. I may have to send our laundry guru a DM and inquire about t specifics. But, yes, I assume it would air dry in the cage to keep its shape. My cage hasn’t arrived (hopefully today) but I’ll let you know how it works! xo

  • I prefer look #2. But those shoes might be very hard to wear for such a long period let alone dance in. Id go with the wedges in first photo or find something else.

  • #2 for sure. First option feels dark and “Fall-ish” for a summer wedding. The lighter background of #2 feels very fresh and pretty. Have fun!

  • I vote #2!
Although I’m obsessed with the wedges in first outfit. You’ll look fab either way.

And that flower garden is to die for!!!

  • Juliet, SO much here I love. First of all, both dresses are so you and lovely. I think you should get both. I am tending toward the dark, but I like dramatic. The fabric in the blue is also lovely. That’s a great dress and I love all the options they have in it! A girl may need more than one. Can we talk about the sandals… Love those braided ones! You pulled together some beautiful looks. I can’t wait to see how you are wearing that beautiful blue dress this weekend!

So funny because I finally had a chance to do a deep dive on Patrick this weekend after all you have shared. The guy is amazing and I am revamping the whole laundry situation. The baseball hats.. Don’t get me started. I always want to throw Max’s away when he’s not looking. Could washing help? I will try! LOL.

How did I not know about the The Home Edit show?? I have seen the book I think. This is timely as I’m cleaning every space out being stuck here. Thank you. .. And thanks for the reminder about the mammogram. I do mine yearly and now I am over a month due. Gotta call asap Monday. I know our Martha waited over the pandemic, as have many women and it’s not good. We have to go asap.

The Puget sound blog was also new to me. My sister-in-law lives in Puget Sound and she will love this. How do people get so good at gardening so quick? Wow!! I will blame my issue on rain. If they could just send us al little more I think I’d look the same.. 😉

Have a fantastic time in Chicago.. Following along! xoxo Kim

    • Kim! First of all book that mammogram. Second, I had no idea you had in-laws in Puget Sound. It’s a wonderful gardening climate. But still. I’ve been playing around in the garden forever and never get any better. And had zero improvement living in the PNW. Oh well. Glad to know you’ve fallen hard for Patric too. He’s amazing. And now the hat trick. I’d like to toss some of Jim’s caps too. Who knows, maybe they’ll clean up in the dishwasher and won’t look so bedraggled. Ugh. I love the darker dress too. So I’m torn. I have six weeks to hem and haw! Hope you have a great week! xo

  • WHAT will you do with YOUR HAIR!?CAn’t wait to see and how you change THAT FANTASTIC LOOK UP!
HAVE FUN!I HAVE A FEW FRIENDS IN CHICAGO ITS A BEAUTIFUL CITY!
THANK YOU FOR THE MENTION ABOUT MY CAFTANS!
YOU CERTAINLY LOOK STUNNING IN YOURS!
AS FAR AS THE BASEBALL CAPS……….I thought that was just a younger generation look!I guess NOT!
MY one SON wears all the time and I swear he is LOSING hair at his TEMPLE from them!!!
The dishwasher trick seems to be the answer for TREATMENT!
HOW FUNNY they have CAGES!I wonder who thought up that idea!
Never a dull moment in the GOTTA HAVE STUFF BUSINESS!
ENJOY THE WEEKEND AND YES I TOO AM INTERESTED IN THOSE SANDALS WITH THE WOOL?
I may have to slide my petite foot into one of yours!
    XXX

    • Sadly, Contessa … Jim is 100 into the baseball cap look and has been as long as I’ve known him. I swear he had hats that are at least that old and if they don’t wash up they have to go! I think they cause hair loss too. But you can’t tell men anything. Love my caftan … especially the color. Can’t wait to see some of the new monogram looks. What a clever idea you and Trish cooked up! xo

  • I love # 2 – perfect light colored for a June wedding! And perhaps the Wedge shoe instead? I love the braided sandal, but might be uncomfortable for a long day of mingling and dancing. Pls let us know what you decide!

    • I think that’s the direction I’m headed! Wedges are so great when you have to be on your feet. Thanks for weighing in! xo

  • Joining the band-wagon here – I vote for dress #2. The blue and white look perfect for a casual summer wedding! Enjoy!

  • #2 dress! Strangely, I couldn’t get the links to the outfits to work. I think the blue & white dress is (maybe) from Anthropologie? Tempted to buy it but I need details. Thank you! Love your blog.

    • Oh no, Jeanne … I’m sorry about the links. I just checked them and they’re working now. And, yes, dress #2 is from Anthropology. Good call. My apologies being late to respond. I was so busy in Chicago I couldn’t get to my laptop. Finally catching up now! Hope you have a great week! xo

  • As usual I think you would look beautiful in both dresses- But I think for a winery wedding the lighter blue and white one (option 2) Would be prettier. I love the little purse purse in option one, though!!)

Now that I’m recuperating I have time to read through all your blogs. You were so right about the baseball hats. My husband has tons of them I had known about washing them in the dishwasher, but I will have to find out how the hat frame works for you!

    Enjoy your week, martha

    • Hi Martha, I’m so glad you’re feeling well enough to be surfing the inter-webs! Dress #2 seems to be the winner. When my cap cages arrive I’ll let you know how the washing process works. I’ve got a stack of Jim’s caps waiting to go! xo

  • Juliet,
First, have a wonderful time Chicago! I have spent a lot of time there in my lifetime, first for school, then taking sailing lessons on Lake Michigan, and of course exploring with my sister who lives there.

Enjoy the wedding, you will look beautiful in your dress and jacket!

As for the casual wedding. I love the second dress. Is it from Anthropologie? I think I have it in my cart.

I am going to try the baseball cap in the dishwasher, I had heard of It but have never tried it.

Love you in your new caftan! Stunning as always.

It is always fun to see what both you and Kim are up too! xo Elizabeth

  • I vote for dress #2. Both are pretty bout if it’s going be hot I think a light colored dress would be cooler.

    • You’re right, Diane … if it’s hot (and it probably will be), dress #2 will be cooler. And it seems to be the favorite for this event! xo

  • I think option 2 would look best for a summer wedding, but personally, I would wear all white accessories including shoes. I’m sure you will look beautiful no matter what you wear!

  • H Juliet,
I choose #2, I prefer the lighter color for summer. But whichever you choose you will look beautiful.
About washing baseball caps in the dishwasher – I knew that! Guess I’m not as out of the loop as I thought.
Pretty gardens!! Oh my heart. I haven’t have time lately to visit all the blogs and instagram accounts I’d like, but this looks like one I shouldn’t miss.
You look so pretty in your caftan the color is perfect for you. I feel like I would look like Mrs. Roper in one.
Have fun in Chicago, I want to hear all about it!
    Xo Heidi

    • Mrs. Roper! Oh my gosh … you would NOT! But that brings back funny memories. You’re in the majority with dress #2! xo

  • Both dresses would be beautiful on you but if I have to choose, it’s option 2! All these weddings, very fun!!

    • Dress 2 seems to be the favorite. Unfortunately it’s back ordered, but scheduled to arrive mid-May. Fingers crossed! xo

  • #1! The dress from Flaunt! I love it with the bag and accessories! Love your caftan too! You look gorgeous!

Always love a laundry tip! I’ve heard of washing baseball hats in the dishwasher, but I didn’t know you were supposed to use the cage too!

    • Yes, the cage! Who knew?! I’ll let you know how it works. And thanks for your vote on my dress. You and Mary Ann think alike! xo

  • Hi Juliet! I like #2 as well. I almost bought that dress – it’s really nice and a best seller body for them.
The garden is just gorgeous – so jelly – wishing I could have flowers spilling out everywhere like that, but with our climate, soil and deer problem, it’s not possible.
    Thanks for a great post!

  • Thank you for including me in your weekend meanderings! That dress looks fabulous on you. And I’m so glad you have been loving your new pieces. So fun seeing you yesterday! Happy weekend ❤️

  • Oh my gosh, Juliet! Thank you so much for sharing my blog here. You are just the sweetest. I’m loving those two dresses, especially the second one.

    • Thanks, Kim … I’m a huge admirer of yours and love following along with your beautiful life, home and garden.xo
