Spring / Summer Color Trends, My Skincare Routine, The Bees Knees & So Much More … It’s Weekend Meanderings

Today on Weekend Meanderings, new year new color trends, the Bees Knees cocktail from Paul Feig’s new book, and my skincare routine.

 Happy weekend, friends!

It’s Saturday and I’m joining Kim and Elizabeth for Weekend Meanderings.

Our weekly roundup of inspiration and goings on.

This post includes affiliate links for your convenience at no additional cost to you. You can read my full disclosure policy here.

this is where I keep my emergency glitter bag.

Do you love this bag?!

It was a gift for a family friend representing a long standing joke between us.

Let’s get right into it.

SPRING/SUMMER COLOR TRENDS

On Thursday’s Instagram Live, Kim and I talked about color trends … in fashion and home decor. Kim nailed it when she labeled 2023 trends ‘Easter egg’ colors.  Viva Magenta is Pantone’s color of the year.

Viva Magenta color of the year 2023.

And a lot of bold, bright color was on display at New York fashion week according to WWD.

Who can forget the scene in The Devil Wears Prada where Meryl Streep condescendingly educates Anne Hathaway on the runway to retail connection.

This week at Nordstrom I saw the connection for myself and took a few snaps. Very Easter eggy, right?

Look at the shoes!!! Now that’s a way to fill an Easter basket.

I also noticed a lot of shiny, satiny finishes that remind me of the disco era but in pastel. Golden Girls meet Studio 54?!

Maxine Eggenberger for Who What Wear suggests incorporating these five colors to freshen your wardrobe for spring and summer.

  • Violet Haze
  • Black Magic
  • Lime Wedge
  • Blinding White
  • Siren Saffron

Here are some accessories from Maxine’s color musts. Accessories are the easiest, and safest, way for me to tippy toe into bolder color.

I was relieved to see black and white in the mix. But how can we consider these classics as trends? Good question, and Maxine responds, ‘I’m sure some of you will argue that white is not a “trend”; it’s timeless. Here in, however, lies its power. Designers made white feel even fresher by exploring it in various fabrications—everything from silk to vinyl—and that’s precisely how we should be wearing it this year.’

In the spirit of Viva Magenta ~

As for home décor, color is also making a comeback and who could be happier about it than me?! For one brief shining moment I might be considered au courant. Me and my green kitchen.

What do you think of this shift toward bold color? Will you be incorporating them into your wardrobe … or home?

SIMPLE VASE FILLER

Many moons ago I bought this large wooden bowl at  Salsa Trading Co. in Sonoma. During the holidays I fill it with pinecones and pine needles, and it was looking a little lackluster once our holiday décor was put away. I saw these boxwood spheres but they’re a little pricey, so I opted for these darker faux moss balls instead. They come in two sizes, and it took two large and six small to fill the bowl. I love an easy decorating solution, don’t you?!

UPDATE ON STRIPES

You know I love a stripe and wrote it here and here. These cheerful, well-priced striped shirts at Loft caught my eye this week. The ruffle detail on this blue and white shirt is adorable.

And I love this red, pink and white shirt … for Valentine’s Day?!

The shirt’s asymmetrical pocket is similar to The Deep End shirt at AYR that’s so popular. I think we can call the Loft shirts a AYR dupe.

NIGHTTIME MOISTURIZERS & MY SKINCARE ROUTINE

I’m fairly loyal to the products I use … including my make-up and skincare. Generally, I don’t try something new unless a product is discontinued (which happens way too frequently). And that’s how my quest for a new nighttime moisturizer began.

Vanity tray on bathroom counter.

I’d been using an Amore Pacific moisturizer for years when it disappeared. It was light, almost gel-like, easy to apply and it absorbed into my skin without leaving a greasy residue. And it had a barely detectible, pleasant scent. Amore Pacific also makes Time Response Cream which is very similar but higher priced. I mean higher. The product I loved was expensive too, around $150, but the Time Response Cream is $450. I have to draw the line. That said, I did purchase a small jar of Time Response Cream to tide me over while searching for a replacement. Price aside, it doesn’t glide on as effortlessly as what I had been using and it leaves my skin feeling a bit greasy. The big question … did it work any miracles on my 60-year-old skin? Sadly, the answer is no.

I then went in the polar opposite direction with a drug store product, CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream. At $17.99 you can’t beat it. It’s a little lighter weight than the Amore Pacific and also has a benign scent. Like the Amore Pacific Time Response, it’s a little heavier than I prefer but I do like it and if I apply it while my skin’s still damp  it goes on smoothly.

Next up, Jones Road Light Moisture Cream. I learned about Jones Road from Kim when she wrote about it here. I trust Bobbi Brown as an authority on skincare and makeup. And I appreciate clean products. The moisturizer has a pleasant, very light and not-noticeable-once-applied fragrance. It’s very similar in feel and application to CeraVe. The packaging is more substantial and very nice.

Three skincare creams stacked on a vanity tray.

I’ve been using all three creams trying to decide which I like best. The Amore Pacific is a definite no due to price, but I’m finishing the jar. And I’m still open to trying more products. If you have a good suggestion, please leave it in the comments.

And that brings me to my morning and evening skincare routines. I think it’s fun to hear about what other woman are doing so in case you’re remotely interested here goes.

Morning ~

Eye Treatment: Rodan + Fields Active Hydration Bright Eye Complex

Evening ~

Make-up remover: Vaseline Petroleum Jelly

Toner: Clinique Clarifying Lotion 2 (I use this when I’ve had on make-up)

Eye Treatment: Amore Pacific Rejuvenating Eye Treatment Gel (its seems this is discontinued now too, here we go again)

COCKTAIL TIME

A few weeks ago Paul Feig was interviewed on the Morning Meeting podcast about his passion for cocktails, his new book Cocktail Time: Great Advice, Embarrassing Stories, and 125 Classic and Original Drinks, and Air Mail’s recent Eight Questions, Paul Feig Knows a Good Martini.  Paul’s book is billed as the ultimate guide to grown-up fun. Needless to say it was in my cart within seconds and on my doorstep the next day. Paul also includes an appropriate song to accompany each cocktail recipe … I love it!

Cocktail Time

Last night I made The Bees Knees cocktail (page 108 in the book) while listening to Paul’s recommended musical accompaniment, My House by Flo Rida.

So there you have it, this weekend’s meanderings.

Let’s visit Kim and Elizabeth to see what they’re up to.

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA STYLE

PINECONES AND ACORNS

Odds & Socks ~

Wetsuit shaming? If you’re a polar bear swimmer, it’s a thing.

If you love stuffed peppers, you’ll thank me for this recipe.

If you’re looking for something to watch this weekend, here’s a not great, but quite entertaining short series on Netflix.

Does your home need a cocktail room?

The San Francisco 49ers are playing in the conference championship game this weekend … with their rookie, last-pick-of-the-draft quarterback. It’s unbelievable … and so exciting. Confession –  I’m late to board the 49er train. As an East Bay girl, I was a die-hard Oakland Raider fan, but their move to Las Vegas was the final straw. Are you a football fan? Who will you you cheering for this weekend?

Valentine’s Day Inspo ~

If you missed the last weekend’s meanderings, you can catch up here.

And follow along for more fun on Instagram and Pinterest.

As always, I appreciate your visit and welcome your thoughts in the comments below.

  • Hi, thank you for your blog, I enjoy it very much. I like Biossance skincare products. I use the entire line and find the products all work well on my skin. I am 54 and have Scottish/German heritage, living in north Florida. I just got rid of my convertible due to recent skin cancer-I now really pay attention! My dermatologist recommends CeraVe products, I am going to try the sunscreen. Good luck trying new products, I find it fun!

    • Good morning, Tamara! I’m going to check out Biossance … I love getting recommendations. I have an Irish family background and enjoy all the skin issues that come along with it. My dermatologist recommended CeraVe too … so there must be something to it. And the price is right. Thanks so much for reading the blog, and taking the time to comment. I really appreciate it and wish you the very best weekend! xo

  • Hi Juliet! I used to love bright colors, but as I have gotten older, I lean more towards blues, black, gray, and sometimes some pops of pink. But I definitely need color in my life — especially if it is a blue and white stripe, haha! I recently started using Caudalie skin products. It is a French company that includes different grape extracts in all their products. I figure the French know skin care, right? I actually love everything I use — the serum is nice and light, the night cream absorbs beautifully, and they have a facial spray that feels like heaven going on! The line I use (to firm the skin) is reasonably priced. They do have a more expensive line with all the bells and whistles, but I am happy with what I use. You might want to check them out! For day I use a No 7 illuminating cream with SPF 30. You can get it at the drug store!

    • Good morning, Molly … I’m with you on the color thing. A pop of something bright here or there … but mostly I stick with the neutrals and blue and whites. I’m going to look up Caudaie right now … thanks for the suggestion. You’re right, the French know things! Have the best weekend! xo

  • Juliet love your color chat here. I do think it’s nice to see what is on runway that filtered down.. Love the clip. Such a fun film. I think for us, just adding a bit of these colors is all we need. Also..the stripe shirts are my thing and love the asymmetrical pockets! Great picks. I can always use more.

Great talking skincare and maybe that should be our next LIVE. I need a good night cream. Right now I am using a natural one from New Zealand, and it’s good, but sure wish I could splurge for the Amore Pacific. I had it once – or one of their creams and it was a dream. I also have a soft spot for Cle de Peau products and their lotions. I fluctuate between drug store and high end. I will try your Cerave cream. I also love a C serum and have used the Jan Marini one forever.
We aren’t football people, but we will watch today. So cool the last pick guy is the quarterback!
Have a lovely weekend Juliet. xo
Oh and cocktails and music! That book and drink both sound wonderful.

    • Good morning, Kim! I’m writing down the products you mention … I love recommendations and need to branch out more to try new things. And, you’re right, this would be a great live topic. I just got back from the morning dog walk and I’m heading over to your blog soon. Have the best weekend! xo

  • Look forward to your post each Saturday! Always find something to note, a new
product, a recipe or drink to try. Maybe a book to read or a movie to watch. I love
your style and follow you on Instagram too!

    • Good morning, Judy … and thank you for following along it means a lot to me. You have no idea. Wishing you the best weekend! xo

  • I really enjoy that viva magenta color! It’s so gorgeous! Love all of the skincare routine suggestions, I’m definitely looking to revamp my collection of products. Thank you for sharing my stuffed peppers recipe. <3

    xoxo – Stacey

  • I love the bright colors for spring although I’m not a big fan of stripes!! You might enjoy following Cheesegal on IG since you like all things cocktails. I really enjoy following her- her story about her dad (which she’s saved in her stories) is worth following her!! LOL

  • Yes I find what others wear interesting too!
I hated that LA MER??Expensive cream Santa Claus brought one year and Vaseline to clean the face is a good one!!I knew an older woman who used that her entire life as she came from a poor family and she had the most beautiful skin she had to of been our age. Now.When I knew her in my 30s, her name was LOVEY!
    Xxx

    • Contessa! I’m with you on the La Mer! Tried it once and detested the smell. That said, I did like their eye cream (no scent) … but it’s pricey. Vaseline and Ponds were what my grandmother’s generation swore by and they had beautiful skin. Simpler is best perhaps. Lovey is such a great name! Reminds me of Gilligans’s island … Mrs. Howell. come to think of it she have lovely skin too! xo

  • Juliet,
So many fun things on this post. I love all of the bright colors, in fact I have several cashmere sweaters in magenta, blue and green that I pull out periodically. Honestly I never follow the trends, I love fashion but I stick to the classics.
As for skin care, I will second the Contessa. My grandmother used Vaseline her entire life and her skin was so soft and so beautiful. As for me, I use the bare minimum. Once a week I do a mask, and at night I alternate between a scrub and a face cleaner every other day. I do not like moisturizers for all of the reasons that you mentioned, so when I wear it I us L’oreal regenerist and I use the eye firming cream as well.
As for a cocktail room, I love that idea. I cannot wait to hear more about your cocktail book and how you like the ones you try. My favorite cocktails are mojitos(extra lime) and anything with vodka and lime.
Have a wonderful weekend Juliet! xoElizabeth

    • Elizabeth … I too love a good mask and just purchased a new one. Haven’t tried yet. I’d love to hear what you use. I’ll add the L’Oreal to my list of things to try. I’m in an experimental mood. Quite unusual for me, but going with it. Love that you have a magenta sweater … I do love that color and it’s the perfect Valentine month vibe. Yes, to mojitos … and always extra lime!!! xo

  • Juliet, I didn’t receive an email announcing today’s post. Am I the only one? I’m relieved that you didn’t take the day off as I always enjoy starting my Saturdays with you.

    • Hi Debra … thanks so much for persevering. I had an email hiccup … can’t blame technology, it was my own fault. I put a story up on Instagram, but knew not everyone would see it. Lesson learned and I won’t make that mistake again. I hope! Thanks for here and have a wonderful week! xo

  • Always fun to read your round up of fun things. Now, about those colors… I guess I won’t be buying anything new for awhile. So not me. But I might be buying some new skin care products . I’ve been intrigued enough that I want to try some Jones Road. I like Bobbi Brown products and she has a good rep

I love that ruffled blouse.., I might have to head to the Loft for a look so thanks for the tip.

    • Hi Karen, the ruffled blue stripe is right up your alley! I hope you like the Jones Road, let me know. In the meantime, I’m gathering moisture suggestions from readers and I’ll order a smattering of them to try out. Having a blog is pushing me to be more experimental. That’s a good thing, right?! 😉 xo

  • Hi, Juliet —
Love that magenta pink, and I was tempted by the gap sweater. However, I just realized I HAVE a cotton cable sweater that color! Whoops! Better pull that out, especially for Valentine’s Day. I love the blue striped shirt as well.
The stuffed peppers look so pretty. That’s comfort food for me as it was definitely in my mom’s rotation, but she just used the green ones. Maybe that’s all that was available in the 60s and 70s! I look forward to trying this version, without the meat. Black olives might be a nice addition.
I’m not comfortable using Vaseline on my skin, as it’s a petroleum product.
Mr. Smith and I will definitely be watching football today, even though the Seahawks are out of it. I’m excited to see all the young quarterbacks in the finals.
Thank you for all the work you put into your blog. It’s always a pleasure!
    xo

    • Hi Julia, it’s it fun to see all the early 20-something QB’s in the playoffs this year?! Definitely a changing of the guard. Sadly my 49ers didn’t do well, but I’m looking forward to the SuperBowl. By all means pull out that magenta sweater … you’ll be on trend, au courant and in the Valentine spirit! You’re right about the peppers, when I was growing up it was only green. Or at least that was the only color my mom felt comfort with! I love using a mix of colors … so pretty, right. Have a wonderful week! xo

  • I completely enjoyed this post! I am loving all the bright colors for spring and so ready for it to be here! I actually just rewatched Devil Wears Prada for the 100th time last week and that scene is priceless and actually so true! Love stripes and can’t wait to try the stuffed pepper recipe! Also, I haven’t tried your moisturizer but will look into it! Thanks for making me smile this Sunday morning! Have a great day!

    • Hi Suzanne! Thanks so much for stopping by! I adore that movie too and can’t rewatch often enough. Hope you have the best week! xo

  • Hi Juliet
I am not a pink person but I can go for magenta in just the right hue. I use that ceravie night cream and think it is the best, so do many dermatologists (those that don’t cell the skinceuticals line). Always lots to love on your Saturday favorites.

    • Cindy, you’re right … my dermatologist (who sells Skinceuticals and recommended the C E long ago) also recommended CeraVe for me. I love that he’s all for hi-lo. You have the perfect complexion for magenta and I’d love to see it on you! xo

  • My tried and true is Vintner’s Daughter Botanical Serum. I love it. It’s the best smelling face oil. But now that I’m using tretinoin cream at night, I need a true moisterizer, to put on top of it. So trying some new things- we shall see..

    • Hi Gray, I should have mentioned Vintner’s Daughter. I did use it at one time but found it a little sticky on my skin. I’m so weird about that, but should get over it because so many well regarded products seem to have a similar effect. I’m not familiar with tretinoin. Is is similar to retinol? I have a hard time with retinols, too harsh for my skin. Maybe tretinoin is a better alternative? xo

  • Juliet! I agree with the Easter egg colors…and I guess that’s spring, I’m not so sure I’ll depart from my neutrals, but after reading this post on the way to the city today, I did buy a vintage French silk scarf at a flea market in those Easter egg colors…so maybe with some gray trousers….and a cashmere sweater!
    Xx

  • I need more bright color now that I’m in Florida! Thank you for the skincare rundown you have such a lovely complexion!

  • All great information here. I bought a pink suit just like the one you showed about 3 months ago. I love it! Thanks for sharing this.

  • So much great information here! Loving all the pinks, blush and peach suits this year! Thinking of this color for myself this spring! I think my real estate clients would think I was cheery! I was just going to post and ask if anyone had skin care favorites. CeraVe has a wonderful facial wash that’s so creamy. I have very dry skin and this has been a game changer for me! I use many of the CeraVe products and have been happy with the line. I love the Skin Medica line of skin care products as well they are the makers of botox. A little pricey, but there is a rewards program and the product last’s a long time. My dermatologist office carries it but you can purchase the products on line. Thanks for all the great tips!

    • Thanks for chiming in, Mary Anne … I’m going to make a list of all the products mentioned here in the comments and share with everyone. I’m not aware of Skin Medica so I can’t wait to check it out. Happy week! xo

  • Hi Juliet!
Love your green moss-covered balls — very fresh. In our first home, I did a blue and off-white/greige color scheme, but quickly began adding GREEN in subsequent homes. For me, it represents living things and nature — leaves. I never wear green, and I am always drawn to elegant neutrals in all decor images, but in real life, I end up using soft green, similar to your kitchen. We have a sage green cotton velvet sofa from 1995 (faded from 10 years in the SoCal sun) and added 4 teal velvet swivel bucket chairs for our new living room to pull colors from paintings by my late mom, an artist. After endless internet searching, I found a muted green, blue, ivory and tan Oushak rug to soften the tailored furniture. Hubs finally allowed me to replace the tan wool “sisal” bound area rug from 1995!

I loved the memorable film clip of Meryl Streep — a soliloquy on fashion and color! And seeing lovely Anne Hathaway made to look dowdy! It’s a nice reminder to us all that we can present ourselves however we wish (with a bit of effort).

Re. skincare products: I think using a Retinol product at night is important for countering wrinkles, photoaging, improving texture and minimizing pores. I haven’t been successful using prescription Retin-A, but have been working up to 1% Retinol. CeraVe makes a gentle one that is specifically formulated to not irritate: CeraVe Resurfacing Retinol Serum. I liked it better than the Peter Thomas Roth Retinol Fusion PM Night Serum, which dries my skin with daily use, but may have a higher %age of Retinol. Info on Retinol is endless, but this is a good article:
    https://www.forbes.com/sites/forbes-personal-shopper/article/best-retinol-creams/?sh=419ba9233e9a
The Forbes article mentions that SkinCeuticals offers 3 products of Retinol that allow you to begin at a low strength (.3%) and work up to the most potent 1% over time.

I am a bit phobic about creams in “pots” which require applicators or dipping into.

Over Retinol at night, I use PC Intensive Repair Cream in Winter or when traveling and their lighter Barrier Repair Moisturizer for most of the year. My sister in law makes fun of Paula’s Choice because they put NO $ into their packaging, but Paula was a pioneer in truth in skincare and beauty products and I think they are quality, low-overhead products (search for the ones with 4 stars or higher/ the RESIST line is for mature skin).

In the a.m. I use an antioxidant serum, like your Skinceuticals CE Ferulic Serum, which is a great one + a high %age AHA for improving pores + a tinted sunscreen. I have been on a hunt for a higher SPF/more sweat-resistant tinted sunscreen, which are great under foundation or as a substitute for foundation on more casual days. I’ve tried Saie, Colorescience, and Elba MD which are 50 spf and 80 minutes water-resistant. These are all lovely products offering multiple color choices, but are more “glowy”, better for drier skin or those that prefer a dewy look. I am sticking with Paula’s Choice “Super Light Wrinkle Defense SPF 30”, which is mineral-based, lightly-matte, and its beige color is quite neutral. I just wish it was more sweat-resistant.

Finally, if anyone is interested in very well-researched reviews of skincare products, check out HotAndFlashy on Youtube. She has been reviewing skincare for 10 years, and while she isn’t a dermatologist, presents highly-researched, self-tested reviews in a professional and concise manner. Very smart gal.

Sorry Juliet! I hope this overly-long comment is helpful for someone looking for skincare products…

    • Hi Joan! Thanks for this great comment … I’m jotting down all the products you mention. I’ve shied away from retinols, even the lower dose, because they irritate my skin. That said, I’m always willing to try again because it does appear to the the gold-standard. I adore Hot and Flashy, and you’re right … she tires every product under the sun and really does her research. Thanks, again, for sharing … I’m going to create a list of all the products readers have mentioned to share with everyone. So great to share information. Thank you, thank you, thank you! xo
