Five Things I’m Loving In January Plus My Controversial Thoughts on a Much Loved & Viral Item

Today on Weekend Meanderings I’m sharing five things I’m (really) loving this month. A cozy cardigan, a viral lip mask, lemon poppy seed muffins and more. Plus my controversial thoughts on a much loved, viral item.

Happy Weekend Friends!

Is it too soon to say the year is flying by?

Well, January sure is and there is nothing but Valentine’s Day in my inbox.

And all the shop windows.

Don’t worry, we won’t be talking about that today.

It’s safe to say that winter is in full swing.

If you’re dealing with freezing temperatures, snow and ice, I’m sorry.

We’re facing down another ‘parade’ of rain storms.

They started up last night and will continue through the early part of next week.

Forecast says the skies will clear for today’s 49er game.

I’m driving to the City tonight with BFF Jane.

We’re meeting her daughter for dinner and I’ve Had It Podcast’s live show at the Palace of Fine Arts.

We couldn’t have picked a worse night to go out on the town.

But rain or shine more rain we’ll have a good time.

So let’s get into it … a few things I’m loving this month.

QUINCE 100% ORGANIC COTTON CABLE KNIT CARDIGAN

I’ve been wearing Quince’s 100% organic cotton oversized cardigan non-stop all month. You know I’m a fan of their $50 cashmere sweaters. And now I’m a cardigan devotee. Most days, at home and out and about, I’m wearing some sort of jeans, tee, cardigan combination. Ok, lots of times it’s joggers instead of jeans. But my upper half remains the same.

I’m wearing a small, and could easily have ordered x-small, but it’s meant to be oversized (hence ‘oversized’ in the name). The sweater is thick, soft and combined with the oversize fit it’s so comfy and cozy for these cold winter months. Quince has a wonderful selection of well-priced cardigans from cotton to cashmere. These are my favorites …

LANEIGE OVERNIGHT SLEEPING LIP MASK

You may already know about, and religiously use, the Laneige overnight sleeping lip mask. Apparently it’s a thing. As usual I’m late to the party and Jim’s daughter-in-law, who gave it to me for Christmas, had to bring me up-to-speed.

I read up on it and not only is the mask extremely popular, but it’s very hydrating and packed with antioxidants including Vitamin C. Goodbye flakey, chapped winter lips.

What it is: A leave-on lip mask that delivers intense moisture and antioxidants while you sleep with Berry Fruit Complex™, Murumuru seed and Shea butter.

Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask

It’s an easy addition to my evening routine. More of an upgrade really becuase I always put some sort of lip moisturizer on before bed. This one feels super luxurious. It comes in the Original Berry, Vanilla (which I have), Gummy Bear, and Sweet Candy. The latter two sound a bit wild. I can only vouch for the vanilla. but any scent is very subtle, and I’m super sensitive to fragrance. Anyway, just in case I’m not the last person on earth to hear about Laneige’s overnight mask … now you know too.

LEMON POPPY SEED MUFFINS

As I mentioned last week, our Meyer lemon tree is working overtime. And I’ve been squeezing and zesting lemons into just about everything. This week I tried Preppy Kitchen’s Lemon Poppy Seed Muffins. They’re delish!

The recipe says it makes about 22 muffins. I got 15, and wish I’d reduced to 12 (and spread the additional batter amongst the dozen) … bigger is better when it comes to muffins.

It looks like I didn’t add the lemon glaze, but I did. I erred on the side of too much lemon juice and my glaze was very runny. The good news it that it soaked into the muffins and was every bit as delicious. Things go wrong, but in the wise words of Tim Gunn, ‘make it work.’

MINIMALISTA BY SHIRA GILL

I briefly mentioned Minimalista: Your Step-By Step Guide to a Better Home, Wardrobe, and Life by Shira Gill when I shared her latest book, Organized Spaces, in my first post of the year. Let’s circle back. Minimalista, Shira’s first book, deserves its own mention and is currently a fixture on my nightstand. As mentioned in my New Year’s post, I’ve come to the somewhat stunning revelation that I just might be a minimalist. At least a minimalist as defined by Shira. After reading the book I began a major decluttering project resulting in multiple donation runs … and I’ve already accumulated another considerable donation box. It’s ongoing.

We all like to start off the new year with a clean slate, and just about every blog and social media post landing in my feed this month has been around decluttering and organizing. We’re motivated! In Minimalista, Shira walks through her easy and manageable steps to creating a clutter-free and organized home. Today I’d like to focus on one area in particular that’s been hilariously (or horrifyingly) in the news of late. I’m talking about water bottles. Shira observes …

‘I’ve been behind the scenes in a lot of people’s kitchens, and there is a strange but universal truth at work. Most humans have managed to cling to the idea that it makes sense to clutter up their kitchen cabinets with every imaginable shape and size of coffee thermos, beverage tumbler, water bottle and smoothie cup they can shake a stick at.’

Guilty as charged. Shira suggests reducing your family’s water bottle collection to one per person and corralling them in a box or basket WITH their lids. And that’s what I did. Jim wasn’t thrilled, he collects a lot them (they’re a favorite corporate swag item) and he seems attached to the memory associated with each one (usually a trip) of his bottles that he does not use.

But back to the news, you may have heard about the Target x Starbucks x Stanley Quencher collaboration also known as the Stanley Cup Stampede. Well, this seemingly innocuous collaboration coinciding with Valentine’s Day has resulted in kicking, screaming and brawling in the aisles of Target locations. The object of everyone’s desire quickly sold out and the pink, jumbo cups are now being offered on eBay for astronomical sums. I don’t get it, this obsession with carrying around huge, ugly insulated cups with big fat straws sticking out.

It’s inelegant in my opinion, but you may think differently than me and love your Stanley Cup. Maybe you even scored a highly coveted pink Target x Starbucks x Stanley Quencher. Hopefully you weren’t hurt in the process. So perhaps it’s time to commit yourself fully to Stanley and let your assortment of lesser water bottles and tumbers go.

I said I do to a white Hydraflask and am pleased to see it made Wirecutter’s list of 8 Best Water Bottles. Stanley, sadly, did not.

VIGIL

We recently watched and loved Vigil. If you haven’t seen it, drop everything!

We watched it on Peacock. A second season is coming soon … February 15th. That’s 27 days, but who’s counting?!

Odds & Socks ~

Serena & Lily’s Up to 35% of Everything + Free Shipping is still going on! I took advantage and finally pulled the trigger on the Beaufort Tray. It’s been on my wish list for several years and I’ve hesitated because I need not one, but two. When the sale started I asked myself, if not now when? The trays arrived last week and are exactly right for our great room lower shelves. If there’s something you’ve been eyeing at Serena & Lily, now might be the right time to bring it home!

Going to a fancy event this year? Check out these gorgeous, but comfortable shoes said to be the secret weapon of celebrity stylists. (Update: The brand is Sole Bliss for those who can’t open the article!)

I’m working on a little bedroom refresh and based on this article I’m 2 for 8.

Sweater hangers … who knew?!

Last weekend I shared our weekend getaway to Santa Monica, and this week posted a brief tour of the hotel Casa Del Mar you can watch here.

Current Favorites ~

And that’s what I have for you this week.

Let’s see what’s inspiring Kim and Elizabeth …

  • Please provide the name and photo of the gorgeous, comfortable shoes you referenced above. The link provided brings me to a NYT paywall dead end. Thank you!

  • Good morning Juliet,
It’s cold, no it is freezing here today but in a few days will be 70! I will keep myself busy inside my cozy house.
Have a wonderful and safe girls night in town, it should like a lot of fun.
Your muffins looks delicious. I would love to have a lemon tree! I wonder if they would grow in NC. I see people with fig, peach and lots of pecan trees.
I have printed this recipe to make when I have a fresh lemon.
Organization is a challenge, not that I am not organized but I find that there are some things like books, magazines, sweaters, shoes, and coats that I do not want to part with. Not to mention I start organizing and purging books and it feels like I am giving away a part of my family. LOL.
The Stanley cup…I have pondered the same on my blog. Honestly, I don’t get it. But then again I do not understand a lot of the Tik Tok trends, like cooking your food in Niquil, butter boards, Mob Wife Look, Bed Rotting, etc.
To fight over a cup is crazy. Stanly is in heaven they have gone from 70 million in sales to 270 in 2 years, they are laughing all the way to the bank thanks to the free publicity from social media.
As for home collections of these things, I feel your pain Juliet. Bill has more Otterbox and Yeti than you can shake a stick at. As you said about Jim, there are memories attached to these cups. I let him corral them in one cabinet.
Lest I let myself off the hook, I am guilty of a plaid thermos collection, I have 6 and only use them if I am traveling by car for my hot chocolate.
Have a wonderful weekend, I am off to check out all of your links and clothing finds.
    xo Elizabeth

  • Hello Juliet!
Have been reading your blog for years and always look forward to it. I had to comment on the sweater hangers. I live in turtleneck sweaters in the winter and I want to see my collection hung in the closet rather than in drawers. I lay my sweaters on a flat surface, then fold the arms to the inside. After that I hang them over a velvet pants hanger. Picture them folded in half hanging on the straight part of the hanger. They don’t get stretched out and are easy to organize. HOWEVER, I think I will order some of the seater hangers to test them out. 🙂

    • Hi Dolly, first of all thank you for being such a loyal reader of the blog. I really really appreciate it and love that you’re here. As for the hanger tip, brilliant! Your method seems like a much better way of properly hanging a sweater. I’m going to try it … my concern is they’ll take up too much of the limited space in my closet, but we’ll see. Happy weekend! xo

  • A good reminder to take a long look at the water bottle collection! I don’t get those giant cups either. I want to be able to throw mine into my gym bag and my hiking pack without leaks. It had better fit into my cup holder!
I love the lip mask. I often run to my bedside table, and dab a little on before heading out for the day. It’s just so long lasting!
I requested the Minimalista book from the library. Should be here by Tuesday.
It’s very cold and wintry here in Colorado. My husband just planted our AeroGarden. It sits on our windowsill, and grows beautiful little herb and lettuce plants. We like to plant our outside pots with pansies and various lettuce/arugula/spinach plants around Easter time. They can survive under snow just fine! We pop in pussy willow branches for a little preview of spring. Can’t wait!

    • Good morning, Lisa … Your indoor garden sounds amazing. How cheery to view your herbs and lettuces in the window. Even in our relatively mild climate, my outdoor winter veg isn’t thriving. I agree about the water bottles. I live in fear of spilling mine in yoga class … so tight lid is essential. I also like them smaller and lighter weight. Excited to hear what your think of Minimalista … it took me a long time to get past the ‘minimal’ part but I’ve fully embraced Shira’s method and style. Happy weekend! xo

  • It’s funny you mention bottles, because with all my rounds of decluttering over the years I never got around to the water bottles. Why not? A few months ago I did and left us each with one bottle and one coffee traveler and we are doing just fine! I love your blog!

    • Kristen … water bottles were the last thing I wanted to tackle and it feels so good to have finally done it. I hope we can go a few months without accumulating any more of them. I ask Jim to please NOT bring home anymore water bottle swag. ha! Happy weekend and thank you for being here … it means the world to me. xo

  • Haven’t heard of Vigil but it will be our entertainment beginning this evening! Our corner of NJ got a good dumping of snow yesterday so we’ll hunker down to some good TV. Also bought the Kindle version of Minimalista so thanks for the nudge.

    Stay safe.

  • Hi Juliet,
Thank you for a lovely post so relaxing on a rainy weekend! I love the Quince cardigan on you and I am going to order one but I could not see your Quince favorites or your Current Favorites, the wheel just kept on spinning and not loading just fyi. Have a beautiful weekend we will be watching the playoffs!

  • Juliet, You look so cute in your cardi. Those are so your vibe and you found some pretty ones.

I love the cleaning out of water bottles and even though I did it about 6 months ago we still have more.. Like they grow overnight. I agree one or two per person seems enough. I have a Hydroflask, but I found it quite heavy. I had zero clue about Stanley cups as I am not much of a Tik Tok person. Funny enough Griffin got me one for Xmas. I started taking it to tennis and I do like it for the ease of sipping, but for travel, like on a plane or in a travel bag, no bueno. They won’t hold water in. For that I still rely on the old Swell bottle which fits in my travel bag and easily in the car.

I have to make my lemon cake as our meyer is going bonkers too. I have been drinking lemon water and I love the muffins. They look delicious! I bet they smell so good too. I love that about baking with lemons. Aren’t we so lucky to be Californians?

I am still decluttering slowly. I am working next on the linen closet…and the drawers. I had a friend who took a bag each week to Goodwill from her house. She walked around and added to the bag from drawers and closets every single week. Needless to say, her house and life seem very chill!!

Hope you have a wonderful time in SF with the girls.. I am due for a visit. I hope we hear all about the trip and the details like dinner!!
    xx

  • Hi Juliet,

I enjoy reading your blog, but this morning, it was even more enjoyable when I saw the picture of the house and patio. Right now, 11:00 a.m., in central Iowa, it’s -1 degree with a wind chill of -26, and the snow on the ground is around 20″ deep with even bigger drifts, so seeing the green plants and trees was like a welcome breath of spring!

I’m usually a very organized person, but after Christmas, I started decluttering. I haven’t missed the things I sent to Good Will and it’s so nice to open a drawer or cabinet and reach for something I need without searching through things that have accumulated, because I was “sure I’ll need that someday”, LOL.

The lemon poppy seed muffins sound delicious and I’m looking forward to baking them. Like you, I always make fewer, but bigger muffins, yum!

Hope you have sunshine in your area soon! Have a fun time in the City!

    • Good morning, Diane! -1 degree … yikes! We like to complain about our weather, but we really don’t anything to complain about. It’s raining right now, but a balmy 57 degrees. I hope you’ll have warmer days ahead … very soon. I hope you make the lemon poppy seed muffins … they’re delicious and will warm you up on a dreary winter morning. Wishing you the best weekend! xo

  • I love Quince for so many things, but the sweaters rank high on my list. I’ve struggled a bit with their sizing, especially with oversized items, but their return policy is so generous I just keep trying things. Everything that goes back is for store credit, lol.
I’ve been using Laneige lip mask at night for weeks, but I haven’t experienced any dramatic results.
Water bottle battles—how much more bizarrely can humans act?!?

    Have fun in the city!

    • Hi Sarah, I hear you … I struggle with sizing on a lot of brands and wish there was some standardization. I think Quince runs a little big and I’m probably an SX, but I do like things to fit a little looser. Which flavor (or scent) of the Laneige do you have? Happy weekend! xo

  • Another great post, Juliet! I love that oversized cardigan and I might give that lip mask a try! I have to say that I do love my Stanley. I got it a year ago. No fisticuffs or hair-pulling involved. I like how it sets a water goal for me for the day. And I have it in a pretty blue. I DON’T like how it leaks, though…. I got rid of my Peacock subscription. Is it worth getting again for this show?? Have a great week!

    • Hi Molly! Does it leak through the straw? I love the idea of a straw, but not keeping it clean. And I’m afraid I’ll bring shame on myself by spilling it in yoga class. I know what you mean about the TV subscription thing. It’s out of hand. Sometimes we purchase the subscription for a month so we can watch a particular movie or series and then I cancel … if I remember. I do think this series is excellent. Maybe wait until the second season is out and watch them both in a month’s time. Oh, I just read you can stream it on Peacock for free … with ads. Annoying but remember when we used to watch TV with ads?!!! Loved your post today, makes me want to start sewing aging. xo

  • I love the Quince cardigan on you! Since I’m spending more time in Denver, I may need to look at a heavier sweater! The poppyseed muffins sound wonderful!!

    • Hi Martha, and thank you. Yes, you do need a heavier sweater in Denver. I imagine it’s quite cold. Burrrr. The poppy seed muffins are really good … I had them for breakfast this morning. The perfect thing on a cold winters day. Wishing you the best weekend. xo

  • Juliet, I definitely had a laugh… the Stanley Cup is the hockey prize we Canadians know so well!
I have a wonderful thermos flask from Ponant explorer cruise ships… my go-to for Pilates sessions. I have gifted others from Ponant. Uniworld river ships give out smaller unlined ones for their excursions , and mine clips onto my bicycle basket for rides to the local beach. Good memories from trips… sort of like your fellow, Jim. But other than a plastic one with a pop up ‘squirter’ my guy uses with his bike frame holder, that’s about it .
Hopefully VIGIL with Suranne Jones will eventually appear on PBS here . No smart tv in our home as yet to get Britbox etc…but on our wish list.
FYI : Any directions to an article in NYTimes asks for a subscription unfortunately, so no access. Cosy Weekend Wishes from Vancouver Island BC

    • Hi there Cath! When I first heard about the Stanley cup (quencher) I immediately thought we were talking hockey. But, no, there’s a new Stanley in town! I too like those bike water bottles, so much lighter and easy to haul around. I updated the post because the NYT article is behind a paywall, the shoe brand is Sole Bliss. I hope Vigil will appear on PBS too … it’s really good. And I’m looking forward to the 2nd season. Wishing you a wonderful weekend over the on Vancouver Island. Do you have snow?! xo

      • Yes, it’s an unusual time of frigid weather swooping down from Alaska, which came with with about a foot of snow. A good core workout with the shovels, especially since I went next door and did our 80 year old neighbour’s driveway too. But, the rain is washing it down to the beach just down the road. Pretty for awhile, but happy its going, Juliet.

        • That’s so nice of you. You’re going to have washboard abs when the snow melts and it’s time for the summer sun! xo

  • I have never understood the fascination with the Stanley cup much less a pink one! That quince sweater is darling on you. Thanks for the movie recommendation and the books for organizing …lord knows I need them!!

  • Juliet, I love your new cardigan! It’s a beauty. I have a girlfriend here in the Mitten, who has a lemon tree she keeps inside during the winter. Last year, she had about 12 lemons off that little tree. I need to forward her the recipe. Hope you are well!

    • Hi Kim! Wow, I never thought about bringing plants inside, but I suppose that’s what a conservatory room is for. Duh! We Californian’s often have our heads in the sand. Totally amazing that she got a nice little harvest from the tree. There’s nothing like the fresh citrus in the winter months. Thanks for stopping by, friend. xo

  • You look fabulous in that Quince cardigan! I too love a cardifgan, and Quince has some beauitful ones!

So lucky to have all those lemons!

I do NOT get the Stanley Cup/straw thing either! Why do people want that? I do LOVE the funny TikTok’s where people are using trash cans and 5 gallon water jugs with a “straw” to poke a little fun at the craze!

    xo
