Father’s Day Brunch Recipe & Gift Ideas, a Summer Dress, CBK Style & My Experience at the Golden Girls Kitchen

Today on Weekend Meanderings, a few Father’s Day brunch recipe and gift ideas, a cute summer dress, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy’s timeless style and my experience at the Golden Girls Kitchen.

Happy weekend, friends!

It’s Saturday and I’m joining Kim and Elizabeth for Weekend Meanderings.

Our weekly roundup of inspiration and goings on.

Great aunt and uncle with baby boy.

We met baby Rett.

Remember last weekend I said we had sun and nice weather?

Well, things took a turn.

This week it’s been been foggy and windy.

We even had rain and in some areas thunderstorms.

Everyone’s had it.

Will the gloom ever end?

Melodramatic? Maybe. That’s the way we are out here.

Picture of pretty garden bed.

We expect good weather with enough rain in the winter to keep our plants alive.

Speaking of plants, everything in our garden is a little delayed.

Looks like the hydrangeas will bloom next but probably not for a week or two.

Our roses are starting to drop petals.

I need to get out there and deadhead.

How are things looking in your garden?

You probably have garden chores to do too, so let’s get on with it.

FATHER’S DAY BRUNCH RECIPE IDEAS

Last weekend niece Sophie, husband Chad, and new baby Rett came for brunch. They were in town for a wedding. And they were celebrating their first anniversary, I shared their intimate, family wedding last summer. Their almost two year-old daughter, Haddie, stayed at home with her grandparents and we missed her. Niece Shelby who lives locally was able to join the fun. It was a good Sunday.

Table full of brunch foods.

These favorite and super easy recipes are also perfect for Father’s Day brunches ~

Ina’s French Country Omelette (I made two of them!)

French country omelet before going into oven.

Omlettes just before they went into the oven.

Dutch Babies from my Auntie Cookie’s recipe. (Preheat oven to 425. Place 1/4 cup butter in a 8-10″ round pan. Put into preheated oven to melt. Meanwhile, in a blender, mix 3 eggs, 3/4 cup whole milk, 3/4 cup flour until smooth. Pour into pan of melted butter and return to oven for 20-25 minutes. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve immediately.)

Cantaloupe & Blackberry salad … recipe shared here.

Blueberry Muffins from the old Pillsbury Cookbook. I use the basic muffin recipe and add a cup of blueberries and 1 tablespoon fresh lemon zest to the batter.

I made two kinds of breakfast sausage links, which remained warming in the oven until late afternoon. Do you ever forget things?! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I’m not an effortless entertainer.

Sophie brought fresh eggs from her chickens … yum. I used them in the Dutch babies and enjoyed them all week.

Baby Rett was born in February. Sophie thinks he looks like her grandpa, my dad. And I agree. It’s the round, happy face and big blue eyes!

Baby boy with blue eyes.

I sent Sophie home with some frozen meals and a big batch of Morning Glory Muffins (I shared the recipe here) for Haddie. Haddie got hold of the leftover blueberry muffins too.

FATHER’S DAY GIFT IDEA

Let me preface this by saying I’m not a creative gift giver. I’m a practical one. Last weekend when Jim stocked up on summer shorts at Vineyard Vines it occurred to me that they’d make a great Father’s Day gift idea for fun and fashionable dads … of all ages.

Jim went into the store to look at these seersucker shorts and bought them in blue and red. He also bought their solid, stretch short in red and khaki.

While Jim was trying on shorts, this striped pullover caught my eye  … and I guess he liked it because it ended up in his shopping bag. It works beautifully with all his fancy schmancy new shorts.

I asked him to model his new shorts and pullover so I could take pictures and he politely declined. Not to worry, when he’s running around Italy I’ll sneak a photo or two.

One last thought in the Father’s Day gift arena, Jim loves these Yeti Rambler wine tumblers … for ‘roadies’ when he’s on the golf course. I like them too, for ice tea.

GOLDEN GIRLS KITCHEN POP UP

A few months ago I mentioned the Golden Girls Kitchen pop up restaurant coming to San Francisco. And this week my friend, Mary Jo, and I went for lunch. A late lunch. The first seating on weekdays (Wed-Fri) is at 2:00pm. On weekends they open at 10:00am.

Golden Girls Kitchen pop-up in San Francisco.

I wish I could say it was wonderful. It could have been wonderful, but there was nobody there. Well, almost nobody. We were there … and a handful of other tables were occupied. The good news is we were able to wander the rooms to our hearts content … recreated room from Blanche’s Miami home. The kitchen, living room, bedroom and the lanai. Oh, and the Rusty Anchor and Shady Pines bars. They did a good enough job recreating the sets … although Mary-Jo and I thought we could have done a better job and we spent a lot of time critiquing the details. Our server, a Shady Pines employee, was very nice and volunteered to take photos … and suggested photo ideas that had us busting up. Here we were directed to pretend we were both listening to something scandalous on the phone in Blanche’s room. We did our best, but I don’t think Hollywood will be calling anytime soon.

When we purchased our tickets we pre-ordered Sophia’s lasagna and garlic bread. It was good. And chocolate cheesecake for dessert. They offered additional side dishes and several themed cocktails. We both ordered The Dorothy, a vodka based spritz.

I’m not sure why the place wasn’t packed. The pop-up was a huge hit in Beverly Hills … and sold out its run. It’s also been to New York City and is currently up and running in Chicago. Miami is next. Anyway, it was a fun idea and we were excited to be there. Mary Jo and I have known each other since 1981 when we worked in the same office building. We hadn’t seen each other in quite a few years and had a good time catching up and sharing our mutual nostalgia and affection for the Golden Girls. Mary Jo has watched all the episodes through twice. As have I and am working on a third time through. It’s comfort TV.

If you too are a Golden Girls super fan and want to see what it’s all about, I’d suggest a booking on a weekend when things are more lively. Many of the Sunday brunches are nearly sold out. The pop-up runs through July 30 and you can buy tickets here.

SUPER CUTE SUMMER DRESS

Strolling through Nordstrom on the way to my personal styling appointment last month this smock top, striped La Ligne dress caught my eye. And I was delighted to find it waiting for me in the dressing room. I paired it with Cinq a Sept’s ruched sleeve blazer in a bright blue. It looks a bit denim-ish (it’s not denim), with a top stitch detail that gives it a little western flare. You may remember I wore this same blazer in gold to Kyle’s wedding last year. I’m a blazer gal and Cinq a Sept’s ruched sleeve style is so fun and flattering. I have to restrain myself from buying it it in every color. But back to the outfit, I wore it recently for a wine tasting day in Napa with my white woven drop earrings (good news, it’s back in stock), white sandals and my favorite ClareV. basket bag. I just ordered this black and white strap for it to take to Italy. Speaking of Italy, I ordered these Veronica Beard espadrille platform wedges too. Fingers and toes crossed they arrive in time.

This is such a cute summer outfit to wear for all sort of occasions … brunches, lunches, dinners, vacations, showers … casual weddings. Or wandering around the streets of Paris … or shores of Lake Como!

The dress also comes in this pretty floral pattern, and this lighter blue stripe. And in solid black and hot pink. It’s a flattering, easy to wear style.

CBK: A LIFE IN FASHION

When Carolyn Bessette, later Kennedy, hit the scene in the 1990’s she quickly became a style icon. We all know the tragedy that unfolded, yet Carolyn and her timeless, classic style is still relevant some 24 years later. Finally there’s a proper book celebrating her fashion sense, CBK: A Life in Fashion, available for pre-order to be released the first part of November. I’m counting the days.

Who can forget her Narciso Rodriguez bias cut wedding dress. My favorite wedding dress of all time.

CBK Wedding.

Or this skirt, sweater, boot combo she wore shortly after returning from her honeymoon. Could be the chicest outfit ever.

Her evening wear was stunning in it’s elegance and simplicity.

And what she wore in her downtime was equally on point.

Carolyn’s style was everything the #quietluxury #oldmoneyaesthetic #stealthweath trend wants to be. Of course, she herself did not chase trends … and her icon status lives on because of it.

A couple of books I downloaded this week … The Paris Apartment and Cassandra in Reverse.

One of my favorite bloggers recently celebrated her 60th birthday … with a beautiful party. Take a look!

If you haven’t seen the movie AIR, it’s so good. Matt Damon gives an amazing performance. As does Viola Davis. There’s no violence, cartoon characters or superheros. Just good old-fashioned story telling. It’s streaming on Prime … watch the trailer here.

Reminder that you can save 10% off Change of Scenery resort wear orders over $100 until June 30th using my code Spritzer10!

And a little gallows humor … my heart goes out to everyone on the East Coast overwhelmed by smoke from the Canadian wildfires. Here in the Bay Area we feel your pain. It was nearly three years ago we experienced a similar apocalypse and I got a good laugh out of this reporters post.

Current favorites ~

  • I love your posts; they make me happy! The omelette looks amazing and I’m going to try it. I’ve never heard of Dutch Babies but that looks like carb heaven so may try that too. Thanks for the pics of CBK. She was sooo beautiful and stylish. I love that all of her outfits would look perfect today! Who else can say that’s about their 90s looks?! Thanks for the time you put into this blog!

    • Hi Kelly … and thank you. It makes me feel so good to hear that. Yes, a Dutch Baby is carb heaven. It’s kind of a puff pancake … very eggy and delish. You can top with maple syrup, or jam or fruit. Whatever you’d put on your pancakes. Kids love them because they puff up beautifully … of course once they’re out of the oven they start to deflate. Still fun! xo

  • Your garden is so lovely and well planned. I, too, need to deadhead my 50+ roses! We’re hoping to turn an old round fountain into a half circle fire pit. Since the fountain just attracts mosquitos.
Can you recommend a landscaper or a contractor who might specialize in this type of work?

    • Hi Peyton, it’s that mosquito time of year. Ugh. If you’re local, we used (twice) and highly recommend, Enchanting Planting in Orinda. They’re wonderful! xo

  • Chad is requesting your recipes for Father’s Day breakfast so looks like I’ll be cooking!
Everything was delish. Hard to say which I liked better. Omelette or Dutch baby

  • I love that La Ligne dress! It is so pretty and the stripe pattern would suit a shorter frame (like me!)
The CBK book is something I would love to read…her refined, elegant, and restrained style made everyone focus solely on her beauty. She was stunning!
We have rain here which is such good news! The forest fires are terrible and the air is very Smokey. I hope this precipitation helps the situation here in BC.
Have fun Juliet! You make entertaining look effortless :-))

  • Juliet very fun post! I think your brunch looks delicious! I will save all these recipes. I have made Dutch babies for a long time and started doing them when my kids were small because I was too lazy to make regular pancakes. I haven’t ever made a Savory one. We usually do fruit in a little brown sugar sometimes lemon squeeze donnet but I just love them.! The cantaloupe fruit salad also looks delicious! Baby Rett is a cutie!
That’s so cool you went to the Golden Girls pop up.. I love those pictures. It looks like a blast. I wonder if I can still get tickets?
I love that blue dress and the jacket. Cinq à Sept is a great brand ! You are going to look fantastic on the trip and so will Jim!
I already ordered the CBK book. I have a magazine with all her looks from the 90s! I live her classic style. Glad it’s back.
    Have a beautiful weekend!! xo

    • Kim! I knew you probably pre-ordered the CBK book too. How in the world can we possible wait until fall?!!! The Golden Girls Kitchen is so fun and I think you can definitely get in. I’d recommend a weekend thought … you definitely need a crowd for this sort of thing. Dutch Babies are the best … and so fast. I used to spend forever making Swedish pancakes … and a Dutch Baby tastes just as good in a fraction of the time. Have the best weekend! xo

  • Hi Juliet! That dress and blazer look so good on you! And you are too funny at the Golden Girls pop-up! Thanks for the book and movie recommendations! (Since when did the Kindle version get more expensive than the hardcover? And why???) Have a great week!

    • Molly! Isn’t it true … suddenly Kindle’s prices are not the bargain they once were. Ah well, the convenient of the Kindle is a great benefit, especially when traveling. But sometimes I prefer to read a real book book. Hope you have the best weekend! xo

  • As always Juliet I enjoy everything you post. You have such a knack for placing your photos and stories in perfect order. I love that you show your photos subject in their entirety! Makes so much more sense to me rather than peek a boos
Love the recipe for Father’s Day I may have to do that.
Of course your garden is lovely!

    • Jessica! Thank you so much, that’s so sweet of you and you’ve made my day! Wishing you the best weekend! xo

  • Juliet,

Good afternoon! So many great things…your garden looks beautiful. Love the rhododendrons and the walkers catmint. Don’t forget to cut it back and it will flower again this season. According to the gardeners I follow your should gather is altogether(like and up-do pony tail) and snip it in half talking off the sent purple flowers and some of the green. 4 weeks later it is back with flowers, not as robust as the first set but still pretty until Fall.

The brunch looks amazing and your guests as well. Rhett is so cute! As is his sister. Beautiful family Juliet and the photos with you and Jim are so sweet.

Vineyard Vines has some classic pieces, and they look great for years. Definitely snap and few photos of Jim while on the trip! I am so excited for you! And looking forward to seeing all of your beautiful outfits and adventures.

Cindy and Kim pick the best outfits. I loved theirs sandal choices. I am trying to hold myself back from ordering a few pairs.

Caroline B. Kennedy was an amazing woman and a fashion icon. I LOVE LOVE that skirt and sweater. It is hard to believe that they have been gone since 1999!

Love your stripe dress! It is going to look beautiful on your trip!

I had not heard of the Golden Girl pop up until you mentioned it, I am sorry it was not a good as you had hoped. As you said, maybe it is more lively on the weekend.

Enjoy the Paris Apartment, I read it a few months ago. Make sure to load up your kindle with lots of books for travel. You can get almost anything from your library!

    Have a wonderful weekend! xo

  • Juliet! I love how you celebrate family!! I’m sure they feel so loved!
That’s so interesting that golden girls pop-up sold out in Beverly hills, but not in SF! I didn’t even hear about it in NYC, but it just may not have been on my radar!
    Xx

  • Hi Juliet
Fun post! Thanks for the AIR recommendation! We just watched Man Called Otto. Loved it!
I am showing houses to first-time home buyers and the husband wore a linen blazer with shorts and it was such a fun look! Love it! We are getting pounded with rain (and hail) in Denver. It’s all we talk about these days!
I love the Jack Roger shoes I bought from you recommendation months ago. I get so many compliments!
Great price point for me! xo laura

  • Really enjoyed this post, Juliet! Your recipes look terrific and the GG pop up was fun to read about: hope I might be able to go in early July @ the Chicago lox. Your ‘grand-nephew’, Rett is absolutely adorable, and I’m not a ‘baby person’. Although I’ve never known a lot about CBK, she was confident and stylish, understated and elegant — a uniquely interesting woman — at least — bc THE bachelor of our time decided to marry her! (even if she wasn’t liked by JKO), and perhaps the new book may illuminate other reasons for me! Love the sexy beach photo — really a great shot! I look forward to watching AIR once home from Italy. I’m not sure where your travels will take you, but we’ve been here since 5.10 and northern Italy is making up for its long drought with regular rain. Thankfully, it hasn’t really ‘dampened’ my time in Torino, Firenze and Lago di Como! Weather has been largely mild but more humid than normal. Things generally become WARM for Summer ~6.25.

  • The brunch recipes look and sound delicious, I will give your menu a try on Fathers Day! We will stay home and watch some of the US Open.

  • Norma Kamali has some dresses like CAROLYN B wedding dress right now!
A GOOD STYLE NEVER GOES OUT OF FASHION!
I spent yesterday morning deadheading the roses and more to do!
    OHHHH THIS WEATHER!JESUS!
    CUTEST BABY EVER!!!!!!!!
HAPPY FATHERS DAY TO THE MISTER!
